I think that this type of lesson fits well with reassuring a class of the knowledge they have. Being effectively student led, they can build confidence in practical application, which in turn can build confidence to practice more. I find that there can be an over reliance by class members on text. As I suggest to them, they will need the ability to recall from memory when they are in 'real life'. This is something which initially I feel shocked some of the other teachers, who utilised text as a structure for the lesson. The free from lesson needs more planning and guidance than a text lesson I believe. What I mean here is that you need to be able to prevent a 'flat' lesson by being able to provide stimulus at times when input wanes. It also helps, to allow the students to prepare by giving them an advance warning of the lesson style. This way they can prepare topics, words and phrases to practice. If you think of how hard it can be to give a lesson where you have had no time to prepare or research your students ability, it is similar to spring a dogme lesson on students. Once they have completed a few, then it can be a fun disruptive to break mentally from a normal text lesson plan.

Dogme ELT is the name of a loose collective of teachers who challenge what they consider to be an over-reliance on materials, including published coursebooks, in current language teaching. It was triggered when, in an article, Scott Thornbury suggested that what was needed in English language teaching was a movement like DOGME 95, a group of Danish film makers who have vowed to rid cinema of a dependence on technology, and too produce films using minimal ... it's the name of a Danish film movement/collective which championed organic, natural filmmaking that avoided the use of artifice such as stage lights or non-diegetic music.

"A dogme style lesson aaaaaaaaah... to show teachers aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah... working with what the students aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah... and using their aaaaaaaaaaaah... aaaaaaaaaah... aaaaaaaaaaah... aaaaaaaaah.." I mean no disrespect. Thanks for sharing your valuable insights and resources, Scott. I really appreciate your passion for teaching and your willingness to help others in the ELT field, I'm learning a lot from you. However, I have to admit that the constant "aaaaaaah, aaaaaah" in your videos can be a bit distracting and make it hard to focus on the content. Have you considered planning out what you want to say before jumping in front of the camera?

No, because he would have then a short video, instead of this.

No because it is a 'natural' think which happens... He is talking about not planning the lessons and let them be directed naturally and you are talking about planning a VIDEO?
