Doing a Pet Portrait IN COLOR!

I normally use quite a lot of earth tones in my pet portraits, but I decided to have a bit of fun and step outside the box! I had so much fun with this one!

When I was growing up my grandfather only allowed me the primary’s and required me to make my own mixes. Now I so appreciate his insistence that I mix my own colors.

Love this pup! Hs big purple nose is the best! "Wet on dry" means wet paint on dry paper, which makes crisp edges. "Wet on wet" means wet paint on wet paper, which makes blended surfaces.

Thank you so much! Isn't he fun? I appreciate you explaining the terms..I know what they "mean,' I was just making a joke that they just don't make sense in the sense that paint is always wet! haha. Love the colors on this pup! While it is true there is no way to apply dry paint to wet paper (not traditionaly with a brush anyway, but you can absolutey do damp onto wet (IE a brush with creamy pigment but not too much water) which gives a slightly different texture and look then wet on wet. Also damp onto damp, which I still have a hard time with but when you get it right gives you beautiful soft edges without the paint completely running away on you.

Hi, nice painting. I watched some other professional artist talk about where to sign the painting. Some say that the choice of paint color and where you put it on the painting, matters as it is part of the painting. Like you I almost always sign on the bottom right.

I do take that into consideration as well! Sometimes it makes sense to sign it elsewhere.
