So wise and true. How I find distractions to justify my actions, instead of following God’s Will. Pray for us 🙏

I looked up the author the preacher here mentioned, Father Hubert Van Zeller, and got one of his books (not the one mentioned, I did not find it yet). The Sophia Institute has apparently republished all of them, but I got mine used at Alibris. Father's words here about the election struck me forcefully. There are many, many opportunities for Donald Trump to help the cause of life and to actually save babies' lives if he gets to office (I am thinking of the many ways abortion advocates not only in our country but in other countries that receive US aid get abortion 'exported' along with care packages, events which he can act to stop through quiet means). He would not get into office if he takes a 100% pro-life stance, for example, saying now that he would veto a law prohibiting abortion nationally. And it's difficult to say that the responsibility lies entirely with him when I don't think we Catholics have done all we could to give him a fighting chance to be elected if he doesn't compromise. Perhaps we do promote life. But do we promote marriage? Do we promote chastity? Do we promote economic policies that really help the poor? Do we promote these positions in all communities, including the poorest? Or do we keep our mouths shut on these 'lesser' but contributory threads of the support for abortion. Do we not--I have heard it, read it--even agree with some ugly voices that some of the people in our country are not capable of hearing the Faith, and let them go their way into perdition. I certainly heard it enough from my teacher colleagues collecting their paycheck in the inner city but in reality babysitting for it. And the same from Catholic parishes who support the foreign missions but make no effort at all to bring the faith to the unfortunate in our own country. We want pro-life but we don't bother to find out what makes a Catholic economy or equally urge the conversion of our country to Christ is King. So I appreciate the preacher's words here, but the issue is so deep, and so not all on Trump but on each of us. And I pray he does get elected.

Excellent! Thank you for this. I think the adventures of foreign missions are one of the main reasons westerners have fallen away from the Church. It's not needed now. We need restoration of western Catholicism now.

Well said. A helpful insight to add to Father's. He does say Trump's wrongly prudential approach may not have the bad effect to be expected "for the sake of others" - that is, post election, for the unborn. That would be a mercy from Him, and not to be expected given the failure to follow His will.

I guess I'll stop hiding from all of my responsibilities in acts of service. 😛 It really sounded good in my head until I listened to this.

Moral Action 12. What are the three sources of morality in a human act? 1. The object of the act; 2. The circumstances that surround the act; 3. The end of the act to which the act is directed. 13. What is the object of a moral act? The thing that is done, considered in itself. This is the most important aspect of any moral action, for if the object of the act is not good in itself or at least morally neutral, no intention or circumstance can render that action good. 14. Are some actions therefore objectively evil, i.e., always and absolutely evil? Yes. Also called intrinsically evil, such acts “are not capable of being ordered to God and to the good of the person.” Examples include all direct violations of divine worship (e.g., idolatry, blasphemy), truth (e.g., lying, perjury), innocent human life (e.g., murder, abortion, euthanasia), and marriage (e.g., fornication, contraception). 15. What are the circumstances of an act? The factors that surround the act itself: the particular persons, places, times, and things involved. Circumstances may change the character of an action, or make it more or less good or evil. 16. What is the end of a human act? The intention, or desired purpose to which the agent directs his action. The end is good when the desired outcome is a true good; it is evil when our purpose is opposed to the moral law. 17. What makes the end of an act natural or supernatural? The end is natural when our intention is within the natural order, as a man walking merely for exercise seeks a natural end. The end is supernatural when our intention is beyond the natural order, as a man walking on pilgrimage to honor God. These ends are not mutually exclusive (one may walk to honor God and engage in healthy activity), but the natural is always to be subordinated to the supernatural. 18. To whom should we commend and direct all our actions? “Do everything for the glory of God” (1 Cor 10:31). “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Col 3:17). 19. What are the essential conditions of every morally good act? It must be entirely good: in its object, circumstances, and end. If any one of these aspects is defective, the entire act becomes morally evil. 20. In order to be good, do our acts need to be performed in the state of grace? No. Even the wicked “know how to give good gifts” (Mt 7:11). However, we must be in the state of grace to perform supernaturally good acts, which alone merit the reward of grace.
