Distraction is good. I am in NC in an area that got hit pretty hard, We live very close to the river so we had to evacuate. But by the grace of God our home is still standing and liked about a foot of getting in the house. Luckily lots of volunteers in our area but have not seen much from Red Cross or FEMA.

My “baby” boy and his sweet wife are in Pensacola while he’s in flight school (USMC 1st Lt.). They live in their RV while he’s in training. I was praying, praying, praying for them during the days when Helene was building. It totally missed them, but My daughter, son -in-law, and sweet grands (5 of them!) live in Hendersonville, NC and that entire area got slammed! Thankfully, they didn’t sustain too much damage (downed trees and a broken windshield). My other son is in southern VA where there was a lot of rain and tornado watches. I’m so thankful that all my kids and grandkids were spared. My heart breaks for the families who lost their loved ones!!! 😢

Sue Wolfe- I was born in Miami. We were always told to clean up all of our tubs and fill them. This will give you water for teeth brushing and toilet flushing and dish washing. Fill up milk jugs (cleaned out) for water. Get candles, batteries for flashlights, charge, up phones, etc. Have easy to prepare food: tuna fish, pb&j, nuts, fruit, and non-perishable items. DON'T open the fridge/freezer once the power goes out, to keep the food cold.

You can also freeze those milk jugs of water to keep your freezer and fridge cold.

Mom and I have lived in Clearwater for 30 yrs and we are being told that from local news reporters to do that and also to make sure we have a lot of batteries meds refilled and water and also to never open your fridge when you have no electricity but we have been lucky to be able to have kept our electricity. You are so very talented!!! So glad you had very little damage. I live 25 minutes from Asheville, N.C. The devastation here is so bad. It destroyed parts of Asheville and in the mountains the roads are just gone along with bridges. It is so much worse than what you see on the news. It also covered Tennessee as well. Interstate 40 to Tennessee is closed because two of the lanes beside the river were swept away. Maybe be 1-2 years before it reopens. We were fine, no loss but our little town flooded 😢

We are farther west from Orlando..nearer Tampa and we lost so many trees!! The sound was something I NEVER want to hear again! We are safe! So happy you made it through unscathed! Your cornice board is beautiful! Thank God for his protective hands!

Helene was so frightening here in Jacksonville. We had damage to out roof and dreaded Milton coming through to hit us again! 😢 We had SO much debris to pick up:(. We all came out safe. But thank God, we didn’t have any damage this time with Milton but we still had a lot of debris. God was watching over us. I felt sorry for the apoplexy in the Tampa area and West coast of Florida.🌟🙏✝️

I think the way you cut the joint in the middle to make it look like one long piece is called “splaying” the joint. ( the 22.5 degree angle cuts). It looks so much nicer than a butted joint! The rug makes everything pop! Amazing! The whole room looks beautiful. I am so glad you were all ok with minimal damage from Milton. Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us.

Consider painting the brick black inside your fireplace. Use high heat paint suitable for grills. It will sharpen up the look of the room and make the fireplace look new again.

I've done it before and it does freshen up the inside. You can also use the high heat spray paint for the outside of your grill.

You so inspire me to entertain making that fire place. I’m crying😢😢😢 I use to live in Jax there with my son and he would snatch those lizards up. Seeing that Florida weather and critters remind me so much of my son whom I miss dearly as he passed away 2.5 years ago from a motor cycle accident caused from a drunk. So Ii moved and it’s a double ended sword I so miss it there but yet it’s not the same there so my first born baby. Please be safe doll! Keep on making lovely projects and flips. These projects, flips have helped me as an outlet to help during the pain of grief. I look forward to creating my own DIY fireplace as it will be so fitting for these Wisconsin winters. We are in Clearwater and we evacuated to our son's in Jax. Our home did not dustbin any damage and I thank God for the blessings. Prayers for those who lost their love ones and homes.

Been in Florida since 1980, been in a few hurricanes!!!!! I always fill sandwich baggies, the big ones too, with water, and place them in between my meats and food in the freezer. Do it early on, so they freeze. Then you can chop up baggies, and have crushed ice for your drinks after it's over!!!!! Fireplace is gorgeous💟 What a great friend, Lisa is, so sweet. Be careful of the poison frogs around Dollee. Cornish board came out great, love it💓

SE Texas here. We make sure the generator works and pull out the spare window AC unit and place it in the kitchen window as the generator won’t power the central air. This year i got an extra long extra thick clear shower curtain on a tension rod to cover the opening from the main living area from the rest of the house to keep the cool air in a smaller space. The fallen limbs and tree debris is always a hassle but it is what it is! Luckily we haven’t had structural damage in the 18 yrs we’ve been here and only flooded once. I’m so glad you escaped major damage! I’ve been wondering about you. The updates were beautiful you did such a good job on the mantle and the cornice looks so much better trimmed out and painted.

Painting the bottom of the ottman black isa great idea. Suggestion: get a grinder and take off the candle spikes on the large candle holders. That way you can use electric candles which are much more convenient and cleaner. You have no idea how much soot candles put out until you have to paint the walls in a home where candles were lit regularly!

Everything looks beautiful! I love the cornice, the fireplace, the furniture ... all of it. My husband and I were newlyweds in Florence, SC, when Hurricane Hugo blew through in 1989. We had just bought our first house, but were stilll living in our apartment. The wind is what I remember most, and we finally moved from the bedroom into the hallway to sleep. My husband, the left-brained engineer, said "We'll either be alive or dead by morning," and slept soundly all night. I was wide awake and jumpy. Lots of trees down, roof damage, no electricity for weeks in some places. So glad you and your family survived and had minimal damage to your homes.. So sweet that Lisa dropped by with cinnamon rolls! You two are my favorite DIY ladies! ❤

I start prepping for hurricane season in April. Buy things like water with each grocery run, canned food that can be eaten with out cooking. If you are able, get a generator with fuel or my plan was to buy a solar powered generators. If you are in a flood zone. Well there is leaving. I don't live in a flood zone. I have never covered windows or anything. I am in Jacksonville. We are sort of protected buy the curve of the land some, although we have had direct hits in recent years. Get your prep done early then relax. Evacuate if you have to but do it early

My son and son in law are power lineman them and their crews have been in Florida for over a month the pictures they have sent us just breaks my heart I’ve been praying for all involved although we and their kids miss them we know that is where they are needed. I’m in Fort Myers, but not near the coast. The scariest part for me was the tornado warnings for a couple of hours. Since I’m writing this after the hurricane, the only damage we sustained was the wind tore the gold sticker numbers off my mailbox. I’ve lived in Florida for 10 years. Follow the advice and use common sense. And, despite the stress, you did a gorgeous job on your living room. I vote yes on the black. ❤ Shirley

That storm was crazy! I just kept faith and did what I normally do to keep my sanity. I'm grateful that we weren't too impacted by it and heartbroken for those who were. Florida living I tell ya!
