Something I've found has improved me a lot as a photographer is actually speeding up rather than slowing down. I've been joining friends on hiking trips in Scotland climbing some of our beautiful mountains. There's been countless places and times we've been where I would have liked to stop for a few hours to get set up for the perfect shots, but being part of a group that's continually moving with only small breaks every now and then has forced me to have to think on my feet about good shots, I've learned more about my camera and can nail down the perfect settings for the shots I want quicker. Obviously preparation and patience is a key element of good photography (especially landscapes) but limiting the time I have to take shots and the number of shots I can take like this has definitely improved my photography, there's definitely benefits to both slowing down and speeding up I think

Great bit of info shared here, shooting tethered in the conmercial world is invaluable. Sony's refusal to work with Adobe is a pain in the butt, so glad Smart Shooter exists. That final tip about getting excited about your own work is something I have always done without thinking about it. Back in the film days (and still now), when I saw something good happening I may even do a little involuntary dance. I had never really considered that this had a positive effect on my subjects and clients, thinking about it now I realise that when I get excited about what is being produced and my lighting then the atmosphere in general lifts and the subject maybe realises that the emohasis is on me to produce good work and not on them. Obviously if you are using models then they do have a job to do, but with portraiture it really is down to us. Nice one, maybe next time I get back to the UK we can have a wander and a landscape shoot, maybe throw a drone up, would be fun.

@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert...thanks so much for watching and for the kind words. Interesting you should ask about the Nikon tethering. I started out using Nikon and the reason I moved (quite a while back) was purely based on tethering. At the time if tethered it would only send files to the computer but for peace of mind I wanted them on the card in the camera too. This couldn't be done back then but it may well have changed since. Lightroom itself though can't control if the files go in multiple places such as both cards and into Lightroom.

There is so many comments on this video Glyn im not sure youll notice the comment. Anyway i recently had a bit of a disaster where my memory XQD card failded and i am now looking at trying to use tethering. One as a way of shooting a bit more accurately but two, as a way of backing up my files, not only on the camera but on the laptop. Im still in the process of researching equipment etc. i Have a nikon d850. I did read that capture one basically removes your files on the memory card to speed up thigs. Something i really dont want to take the risk on. But another thing is i use an l bracket. Is there a particular cable you would advise on getting.....much appreciated. Your videos are so educational and priceless.

I'm always looking to make things more portrable so now use my iPad Pro to tether and 'at the moment' I'm using CaptureOne Mobile as the softwre. It is very easy and very fast. great video. How does the speed of Smart Shooter compare with something like Capture One? Is C1 faster? Also, I like how with C1, you are able to organise the photos, add stars/rate them, mark them as selects.. is there something similar on Smart Shooter?
@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
Great question. sMart Shooter 4 is fast at importing. I've use C1 and would say they're pretty much the same. Smart Shooter is a dedicated tethering software so not something for organising images as you can in C1 and Lightroom.
@TheBikeFather2 жыл бұрын
@@glyndewis Ok Thanks. If Smart Shooter doesn't have any ratings and can't organise photos, I'm curious what's your workflow, when you're using it on a shoot? As currently, I'm using C1. I'm mainly taking headshots, and I'm showing clients the photos we take on the spot, and choosing the final picks together, so it's useful to have at least some sort of stars to rate photos. How do you do it?

After buying my tether tools cable, and using my Sony A7RIV I got the Sony Imaging Edge to work in Live view, then after watching this decided to buy Smart Shooter 4, I must say I am having a massive headache with it and cant get it to work properly! I can see live view in Smart Shooter, setup LR and activated the Plugin, and when I take a shot LR does not import correctly because Smart Shooter is saving the files in 2 different folders, a few shots will go into the Smart Shooter folder and others go into the child Folder I named when activating the plugin called Test Shoot, they are not importing and have to right click the folder and click Synchronise Folder then it can see new images there, that's when I found they were randomly going into these 2 different folders and not importing! I can not find a way to fix it and get it working and I am pulling my hair out! The save folder in Smart Shooter is in a folder called Smart Shooter 4 and that is the folder I set in LR to import too? I also get a message in LR saying "A Captured File Could Not Be Saved, Your Drive maybe full or may longer be accessible" I am confused. Am I missing something, if anyone reads this that can help I would be very grateful, I know you're not support Glyn and you use a MAC and this is Windows I am using, so don't worry about trying to help if you're not sure, however if you are then by all means fire away. Great video and good content. I have started the tethering via Lightroom but it does like to go to sleep and loose connection to the camera which in my case is the Pentax 645Z even when using Tehter Tools cable. However, I will look into the Smart Shooter 4, the Cam Ranger is too expensive for me as I am not a commercial photographer.

Yeah I experienced that a lot with Lightroom Julie. So many tines I would think I'd nailed a shot, only to look at the screen and see the spinning wheel of death and no camera connected message. 100% I don't get that with Smart Shooter. I actually use Smart Shooter as a standalone rather than as the plug in to tether into Lightroom because the laptop I use isn't my main workhorse. Tethering for me is to make sure I get everything right at the shoot and then later I'll transfer the Raw images from the camera / computer. Hope that makes sense.

Thank you again Glyn for this reminder and encouragement. I have and occasionally shoot tethered but tend to shy away cause my laptop screen is not good. I have hauled a larger excellent monitor, a spare I used to use for all my editing. So do you use only laptop screen or at times use sep monitor? And Noticed the coat and tie in a short clip there. What’s “your” preference for that when shooting w clients. My personal opinion is many have traded the value of their own presentation for what they feel is a fact that they are good enough, or a pro that they don’t care or need to care how they look. Thanks again!

Hi There...thanks for watching the video and the kind words. Re your questions... 1) I tend to use my spare (old) laptop when tethering on location; it's calibrated and works well. When outside I put into a sun shade to eliminate reflections. 2) I was wearing the suit / tie as I was at a World War 2 Veterans Lunch on that occasion. As for what I tend to wear, it varies from shoot to shoot and who / where / what I'm photographing ... I just dress to the occasion / environment ... if that makes sense.

Hi Ron...Yes indeed a USB-C to USB-3 cable does work for this. I use an older laptop for tethering and mainly do it wireless using the AirDirect from TetherTools but sadly this kit isn't currently available (it's being worked on). I tried to tether recently into LR on a commercial shoot and it was very problematic. Firstly the Tehertools cable kept coming out of the USB on my Macbook slot so would definitely recommend using their 'Jerkstop' product or similar. Also, it's worth checking your screensaver timings on your Mac/PC as this will timeout your LR session. Luckily my assistant had a copy of Capture One on his Macbook so we tried that and tethering was flawless. Just wondering whether Smart Shooter would help with tethering into LR as I prefer using LR for all my cataloging & grading?

Yeah had the same issues before when shooting a different camera directly into Lightroom...always found it problematic. Always puzzles me that camera manufacturers haven't been able to build a reliable wireless tethering. Here in 2022 when even a low-end phone supports 802.11ac and thus a wireless bandwidth of several hundred mbits/sec. Running around with a thick, stiff cable attached to the camera, getting it stuck on light stands, tipping over your coffee if the cable catches it, etc.... Tethering is just vital in the studio. @@SPDBIKER Glad to hear. Lot's of pros and cons for both apps. I work professionally with them and use both depending on the needs of the job. If you want to shoot tethered: C1 is hard to beat.

What a shame that tethering in Lightroom is still not running native on a M1 Mac.

Woks fine in Rosetta mode though and that's no drama to switch

@@glyndewis Not really an acceptable option for professional use. But luckily Adobe finally updated Lightroom Classic and made tethered shooting M1 compatible for Canon Cameras and Tether Tools is able to benefit from this update and Sony Cameras will now work as well.

Anybody serious about photography and tethering is certainly using CaptureOne.
@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
Nah I disagree....anyone serious is just using the software that fits their workflow, their budget and is 'fit for purpose'

@@glyndewis Not really, I have been a professional photographer for over 30 years, and not one professional I know uses Lightroom to tether. Although it is a great option for people you mentioned, it is far from being the best option for Professionals. GO to any professional Studio in the world and 99% are using Capture one. Period. SO we can agree to disagree.

I disagree completely. This is more an elitist mindset, not a practical one nor a valid one.

@@robertfousch2703 OK, as long as you are happy, that is all that matters.

@@ekphotography Yes, the ability to produce a high-quality end result is the goal. Personally, I don't use Lightroom or Capture One for my tethering, but something I assembled that is much faster than either one for studio reviews, along with a backend replication to the network NAS and editing rigs (via gigabit ethernet).
