Absolute legend Dan - Mrs was complaining all evening yesterday when I got back from work at 7pm as she wanted to take the chill off the house and the CH was not working. Called our plumber this morning and he was off on his leave (fair enough) but said to Google you - all fixed and working again via this and Mrs happy - happy wife - happy life!!!! Cheers mate - lets hope it kicks in tomorrow morning! 🙂

Another extremely thankful person here! We had cold water for 2 days. Our boiler wasn’t pumping water, kept getting f.22 error even when the pressure gauge was at 1.5. I just did this to the pump inside the boiler and voila! Hot water in our taps again! Told my husband I wanted to kiss you, he wants to kiss you too 😂😂😂😂. THANK YOU!🎉

I did not even had to go any further than just unscrewing the first screw. After I started turning it off, just less than a half turn, the pump started working. My pump is Armstrong, Astro 23CI. Water Pressure!: Thank you Dan, my pump is integrated within the combi boiler. My first (and only!) suspician was the pump, which was confirmed by your excellant video. So I checked it to make sure that it was, as you suggested, not jammed by summer inactivity. After a while of fiddling with the pump and it not starting up and it appeared to be free, my thoughts, confirmed by yours, indicated that a replacement pump was needed.What a pity, but there you are! At which point, my eyes inadvertantly strayed onto the boilers water pressure guage where I noticed the pressure was very low. Doh! I topped the system up and the pump sprung into life. Ach, I should have checked that first! I hope this helps others!

Namely, from some reason, heating is not working, and I tried to check the pump, by unscrewing the cap as in this video (to try to start it manually), but when I removed the cap on the pump, water started to come out in the stream. I closed it quickly, as pressure started to go down. Is it normal thing? Do I need to ignore the water stream and to try quickly to unscrew the screw inside the pump to check if it is jammed?

@@PlumbingGy Thanks a million for your speedy reply. Maybe I was confusing with my question. So basically, I usually do something like your video, when there is an airlock, where I only have to loosen the screw a little until it bleeds out the lock. This time as I haven’t used it for several months during summer, I’m guessing might just be a little stuck, but when I open the screw completely the water keeps pouring out. I thought maybe if I tightened the valve immediately above and below the pump it would stop the water for me to remove the screw and turn the impeller a little?

I had one that wouldn't run but was free and, from a check of the winding resistance, still OK from that point of view. What had failed was the capacitor (2uF, the value of the capacitor in the case of the pump you have there is printed on the label). I located a suitable replacement (it has to be a 450vac type often simply called a motor run capacitor) and fitted it (a fairly easy job) and its been back in service for many years. Way cheaper than a new pump.

Hi Peter no it's meant to trickle out when the vent is off as long as it stops and seals when the screw is replaced you are ok 👌🏻. The vent screw is removed to release any air when the air has purged water will begin to trickle out when this happens replace the screw and reseal.

I have done this before to unfree pumps. Sometimes even tapping a pump with a mallet or handle of a mallet works (don't hit it with a hammer!). Unfortunately I can't do it this time because the plumbers have faced the pump inwards towards the boiler. I suspect the start/run capacitor may be at fault though. Anyway a useful video. 👍

Hi Dan, cheers for the rapid reply. It wasn't a lot of pressure but there was some squirting. There was probably 500ml of water but I think that could do with the pumps location. Long story short, got the cap off, impeller spun freely. Turned everything back on and could hear it running softly. Few taps with the hammer and it would kick into gear.. For about 10 seconds then I got the red light of death again. Burnt out you reckon?

@PlumbingGy

This is just an initial thought but it could be a faulty motor within the pump, especially if its getting very hot. Too hot to touch? The additional burning sounds backs this up to be honest, Just give the installer a call to return as u suspect the motor, when he gets there make sure its not just air running through the pump and creating an air lock. hope this helps

If you have removed then big brass screw from the front with a large flat head screwdriver and it is trickling water then the pump is bled and no more air is in there, screw the screw back in tight and test 👍🏻

Can anyone help? I'm getting a knocking sound near the pump. The boiler fires up for heating but then chugs out and stops firing. The knocking is every 3 seconds or sound. I've done this and it hasn't helped

I tried this and I got a continuous flow of water out of the pump instead of a little bit like yours, would you know what causes that?
@PlumbingGy
@PlumbingGy 3 жыл бұрын
The pump shouldn't be pouring with water excessively, it will need to be Inspected further to diagnose

@@PlumbingGy thanks for your reply! I rewatched your video and I just realised that I didn't turn on the central heating before doing it, could the flow of water be because it wasn't turned on or there's definitely something wrong with it?

My heater is continuously humming, I've tried bleeding the system but nothing works, it happens on all 3 settings continuously on and engaging the boiler to kick in every few minutes

That's a cool trick with spinning the stator with the screwdriver! Unfortunately, you can't do that with the common Taco pumps. I disagree with your comment to check the pumps every year during the summer. Their is really nothing you can do if they stop on you, so why bother? Have a backup pump handy and get on with it. Also, the comment about the pump needing to be replaced if it doesn't turn under power is false. Many times wire nuts shake loose in the electric box and cause a disconnect (or if the wire breaks ). Check for electricity before making assumptions like that. Thanks again!

Do you have to turn off cental heating when you unscrew it??
@PlumbingGy
@PlumbingGy 6 жыл бұрын
Hi carol, if it's jammed yes. Make sure it's switched off and you get get inside to spin and free up the pump. If you are removing air then you don't remove the screw just loosen. Hope this helps

@@PlumbingGy Forgot to ask you Dan, i have outdoor condenser boiler so have pump out there, theres also one in the hotpress upstairs and one beside the fireplace for backboiler, whats the one in hotpress for?? Do i have to cut out the main elec switch for house?? Thanks for info😚

@PlumbingGy 6 жыл бұрын
Hi carol, This would be an educated guess as I don't know what system your running but 'GENERALLY' a pump located in a hotpree or storage space would be for the hot water or for pumped showers, as for the wiring it depends how it's wired in. I'm hoping it goes to a separate spurr? If so you can just isolate it by removing a fuse, if not I'm afraid you will have to find out the correct circuit and isolate before working on it. I hope this helps.

No need to turn water off however I would turn off the heating best practice, as for the led it will depend on the set up I'm afraid the best way is to check to see if u have power there first and that the motor in any pump is working 👍🏻
