Doll Aria by Natalie Dessay, Orange 2000 - English subs

"Les oiseaux dans la charmille", Olympia's Song, Doll Aria - under these names is known this famously challenging vocal piece for coloratura sopranos from “The Tales of Hoffmann” by Jacques Offenbach. Here we present it in Natalie Dessay's interpretation, in an imaginative staging arranged by Jérôme Savary for the Chorégies d'Orange festival in year 2000. Natalie's partners are: Markus Haddock as Hoffmann, Antoine Normand as Spalanzani, Angelika Kirschlager as Niklausse, Jean-Paul Fouchécourt as Cochenille, Chœurs du Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse et de l'Opéra-Théâtre d'Avignon et des Pays de Vaucluse, and Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse under the baton of Michel Plasson. Recorded on July 15, 2000.

So maybe the eyes, giant dolls and all that crazy stuff are supposed to be part of the hallucination? Although this version is quite far-fetched from the original

I truly think she is... Dessay is a proper diva of our time, an opera diva of the highest order... Precious and rare are those who can stand alongside her as the finest interpreters of this demanding role! And kudos to the director of this opera production, for not falling into the seductive pit of vulgarity, but rather keeping it on the magical (mystical) fairy-tale plane, which is so delightfully surreal, stimulating the imagination of everyone who has ever been a child, remembers it, or experienced dreams that were mixed with nightmares...

Proszę zatem nie robić ze mnie "małego Kazia" a z siebie... No sam Pan wisz... From her expression, it looked like she was muscling up the E flat (and F) despite its flawless sound...there are some days where you just don't have your entire range at your fingertips. (sorry for the mixed metaphor) The tact that she's singing half an octave above most of the written material should be impressive enough.
