Very well prepared, very informative and just pretty to look at ❤❤❤ I love that you did take the time to get out all those dolls and ponies from your displays.👌 There are some minor things that I might disagree a tiny bit but just out of experience and not because I could really disproove them. I also get a lot of questins on Pony or Barbie hair and they often are scared to work on Kanekalon hair or G1 ponies with tinsel when they watched videos that probably explained it similar to yours. Being scared of using heat on them at all. But both hair types from my experience take more heat than what you expect. I never had Kanekalon melt on me and it is soooo easy to crimp with a crimping iron. I believe it can happen, don't get me wrong. Instead I had RH (Amaya Rain) hair melt on me while boil washing... so I wonder if that hair is something else than normal nylon or if nylon is actually less heat resistant than we all think...😵💫Since I usually don't do boil washes on Nylon hair. But especially metallic tinsel on ponies I treat the same way as all other pony hair and it takes it perfectly. I specifically straighten the tinsel hair (sure always wet and with lowest heat setting on my flat iron) but it gets so nice and straight again. The irideceant tinsel is a different story. That one can break open and loose all it's tinsely shinieness over time and especially with combing and also with heat. My fave hair fiber is Kanekalon (RIP) followed by Nylon and then Saran and well.... Poly. I recently found a video that explainded sooooo many more hair types that I had never heard of and I totally got confused😹 it was more from a customizing point of view and I think it was perfect that you focused on the 4 main types used on dolls with some honorable mentions.💗💗💗💗
@ChadMarvelous9 ай бұрын
Thank you. This is good to know! I was only speaking out of experience and I've unfortunately ruined some tinsel before. But when it comes to the different hair fibers, I always like to mention that you can technically use heat tools. As long as you're careful. I try not to give any absolute answers telling people what to do or what not to do. I appreciate that you added to the conversation, especially for anybody watching this video that might want to know more for my little pony or tinsel specifically. Also, there are different types of nylon, some react differently in certain situations than others. I have heard that nylon and polypropylene can frizz up from boil washes if the temperature is too high, but I've never personally had that experience. I wish I mentioned that in the video... I'm going to pin your comment so other people can easily see it. I think it will be helpful for people watching this video as well! Thank you for your comment 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷

Saran seems to be the overwhelmingly dominant fiber used in Japanese dolls. Toyokalon also pops up a lot in specialty dolls and wigs, which as I understand is like Kanekalon but with less tangling and a higher heat resistance so basically an "I'm you but better" situation.

I agree that Monster High G3 definitely helped people to understand the difference a little better. That's part of the reason why I wanted to make this video in the first place. I kept getting people asking me how I know the difference between claudine's hair and draculaura's hair for example. I also really hope this video reaches more people mainly so it can help if they are interested or want to know.

This video was so good & informative! I really appreciate that you did this for others. I know these facts already from experience, but when I 1st started collecting only like 4 yrs ago, I didn't know. And I've noticed that even some long time collectors don't know the difference. But I think they're the type to just buy a doll & put on shelf & never do anything with it. Once you've played & tried restyles on each type, you usually can easily identify what they are.

You did a great job of explaining and showing the dominant hair fibers!! There are a few more variants of nylon (DG - doll grade, kiwi, metallic, etc) but those are a lot to keep track of. As someone who has been rerooting for a long time, there are SO many more out there but that I haven’t seen on a factory doll. Synatra is one of those. I’d describe it as a mix between kanekalon and nylon, but much softer than polypropylene. It has a REALLY high temperature that it can withstand before burning, but I’ve found that it tangles really easily. I could go on and on and on lmao

Chad Marvelous, thank you so much for this doll hair guide! This is so very helpful to identify different hair types of dolls that we have bought and collected in our doll collection. I do remember wayback in 2019, I bought a Barbie Fashionistas ( her name is Pretty in Phython) I do really believe she has a kanekalon hair. The hair fibre isn't that shiny, straight, and matted. That way you described it. I had no any idea that she has a kanekalon hair, I boiled wash her hair and it got melted and frizzy. That was so really bad, I ruined her hair just like that. I have another Barbie that has a kanekalon hair which is Cali Girl Lea from Cali Girl Horseback Ride line from 2004 where they had horses and everything. She has a long black brown hair, it's really straight and matted. But yes, it's really soft and easy to style though. That's true, kanekalon is really prone of hair breakage. It's easily got broken compare to other doll hair types. I really love this video so much, it's very knowledgeable to every doll collectors out there that can't identify their doll hair types.

I love a thousand splendid dolls! Her videos are always so informative and she's extremely helpful when i have questions! Yes the naturally curly saran hair definitely does bounce back when you boil wash it, i learned that from her when she did it to one of her my scene Madison dolls and i did it to one of my mystery squad kenzie dolls and the results were phenomenal! I also do it with a deep conditioning treatment to any and all naturally curly haired dolls when i first get them out of their boxes or rescue them and it helps to maintain and protect their hair. I did that with my wild hearts crew cori, and my naturalistas dolls, hasbro moana, and several barbies as well and even after being stored in tote buckets they still have beautiful curly hair that's not frizzy. I also recommend pouring watered down gel on their hair after the boil wash and conditioning treatment, as that helps to protect their curls without being crunchy. As for tinsel, it was also used on early 2000s my little ponies, as i have several of those myself, all rescues, and while they're not factory perfect, i think they all still look quite nice, and so i don't really mind tinsel at all. I think it looks nice in the hair isn't difficult to care for at all. I really don't have a favorite hair type, as different ones are needed for different reasons, it's all about learning to work with each one individually, just as with people hair. Tho i will say i feel more drawn to rescuing and restoring dolls with kanekalon hair. I've always referred to that hair as "cotton candy dandelion fuzz" and its actually very similar to my own hair😂 so i feel for them when their hair goes crazy😂

Saran, Poly and Nylon all smell totally different (haven’t gotten my nose on a Kankelon doll, but I assume it’s the same there). It’s not a thing to easily describe, so I usually use a doll with a known hair fiber to test the smell. (Yes, I know how crazy all of this sounds :D)

Great video! I've been collecting Barbie off and on for the past 32 years. Back in the '90s, Kanekalon was the devil! I get why Mattel used it, thanks to your explanation, but the dolls' hair got so frizzy when it would be brushed more than a few times. That was when rerooters would buy long-haired dolls, intending to use them as hair donors. I prefer saran but I might have to learn to love nylon. The colors are beautiful! My understanding is that saran works best with the knot method while nylon is better for using a rerooting tool. I knot but am going to learn to use that rerooting tool! The first time, I dropped the needle down into the tool and couldn't get it out. 🤪 Question: Where did you find the small alligator clips you used on one of the dolls? I think she had raspberry colored hair, maybe nylon. And what about super heat-resistant hair fiber? Is that a type of nylon? Premium nylon? Thank you! So glad I found your channel!

There are a few different colors in that color range, but if you want that extremely vibrant lime highlighter green, those are the two colors that I think are closest (I'm just basing off the pictures on the website though, I don't have them in person to do a color match)... I also plan to reroot her with either nylon or Saran because I hate the polypropylene so much, but I like this hair color on her.

There’s a myscene doll that has a very specific hair fibre that none of my other dolls have. I have no clue what type it is, but its amazing. She seems to be a maddison doll. The stamp says 1998 mattel, china. Its very very soft, has some flyaways but also shiny, has some weight to it AND took recurling well (with hot water) i repeat, NONE of my other dolls have hair like hers. Shes the only one i have with this hair. Just for her hair and face alone, shes my favourite doll aside from my fashonistas articulated brunette doll (for her articulation and brown hair)

I don't have many dolls so I have not felt all the hair types you have talked about. But I do know what Kanekalon and Saran felts like because my sister still has her 80s Barbies with those hairs. I don't have any of the MGA dolls so I can't talk about their hair. For me the most softies hair I felt is the Jakks ILY Bambi doll even the other ILY dolls Bambi beats them all. I feel from what you have said I think my Sailor Moon dolls have saran hair but am not sure. But I love dolls with tinsel! lol

ok i’m not too bad with defining doll hair but poly can kiss my a$$ the worse hair type ever saran is my faveorite imo and bc i’ve never handled bad kanekalon i will say i find it very soft and fluffy and will take it over poly any day but again i much prefer saran and nylon over kanekalon and poly

I love this video. I have two Moana dolls with very curly hair and I unfortunately made the mistake of running my fingers through it because I like how that felt. The smaller versions hair is now very very knotted and frizzy and I don’t like how it feels anymore. The bigger one I have is newer and she has frizzy hair, but I will try really hard not to mess with it. I tried washing the smaller Moana dolls hair, but it didn’t work. I still love both of my Moana dolls, though. I also love this video. it is so cool and interesting to learn about each hair fiber.

I love 💕 tinsel in my dolls hair, but I display them and they stay nice and pretty, but I can understand how it could be annoying.
