This is a great video. Our house caught on fire in one room while we were at work. It was within minutes of a flashover and really searching for air. The first responders had a very tough task because they knew introducing air in the wrong places would be disaster. They placed three separate men at three entryways and did exactly what they needed to do. There was a big flashover once they entered the house, but they put the fire out and no one was injured. Sure our interior had to be totally rebuilt, but these guys saved our house. Much respect and much appreciation for what you guys do.

This is the fire department in my hometown (Birmingham, AL) that made this video. Growing up, all of my interactions with these gentlemen were professional and very knowledgeable. I’m not surprised they made a presentation of this caliber. Excellent work, and I hope that many new firefighters learn from this video and the model used in it.

Volunteer firefighter here. I learned alot, Watching the video and reading comments below. thank you. Our last fire here in my community of 200 was over 15 years ago that ended with the death of the occupant. Our crew at the time didn't have formal training. We now have 10 volunteers and train under the instruction of Career Firefighters who fly over to us to train. Once again, thank you.

Fantastic demo. The culture in the UK is pretty much the polar opposite iof the US - it's all about surpression and very very few people advocate any kind of ventelation at all untill after the fire. In reality of corse it can be useful, but how it behaves and the fireground must be understood extremely well I think for tit to be safe.

each room only flashed once. a flashover is the sudden and sustained transition from a developing fire to a fully developed fire. so the supposed flashes that occur after that when the fire had died down, and then got going again with the introduction of air, is a backdraught. a backdraught is a well developed fire that is starved of oxygen. when oxygen is reintroduced it deflagrates as it is still at auto ignition temperature

Interesting but can't help wondering if this is sending out mixed messages, at least from looking at the comments. The key message I got from this video is to create a vertical vent hole, and allow just enough air into the building from the lower levels to facilitate vertical venting of gases, but not quite enough to feed the fire.

OUTSTANDING!! I'm not a firefighter, but I did go away learning a lot. If more if these type of videos we made, and the public watched them all the way thru, even many times and learn, they will better understand why firefighters do things at a fire that come of looking to many of us like they are jacking around doing nothing or in many eyes, doing something "wrong" tactics wise. Would cut down on the nasty comments overall both from the public and firefighters jumping on the public's comments calling them stupid names and other shit.

Great video to show how venting WILL help the fire to progress. In Europe, things get done differently, like putting the fire out before it destroys the building. Also, you need a new driver for the ambulance. He had enough space to turn that darn thing around in one go.

This video Proves that Vertical Ventilation Does Not Work. Roof venting Never works as intended for two reasons. 1. A building is Not a chimney and won't work like one. Between the hole and the first floor you have many dampers such as ceilings, floors and doors. 2. The main reason is this. The burning material in the attic will continuously generate energy Especially after you have cut a hole and introduced fresh air into it. As the flames go out the hole they are not causing a draft throughout the structure. The burning material is replacing everything that is escaping. Notice here, with the hole in the roof, smoke and flame are Still coming out the door and windows. If roof venting worked, air should be sucked in. Solution? Patiently find what is burning and put water on it. If it gets hot along the way, cool the ceiling with a spray of water. K.I.S.S. 11:00 "What happens at the gable when the roof is open?" If the roof hole is letting heat out, air should be sucked in at the gable. 11:55 If the fire is raging out of the gable and the roof hole, when he opened the window, air should have been sucked IN, not heat and smoke belching out. The roof hole improved nothing. 12:15 Thank you for proving my point. Open the roof and the smoke STILL pours out the window. Notice when he opens the window he says nothing because he is Disproving the reason for vertical ventilation and his tongue is tied. Listen to what he is saying and proving. NOTHING. He's totally confused. Think for yourself, don't just believe what you hear from a so called Expert. PUT WATER ON WHAT'S BURNING!!!

JB91710 I think the point of this demonstration was to show how ventilation effects the flow path of fire. He did a poor job of alliterating what was supposed to be happening. The point of ventilation, to my understanding from my fire classes, is to release all the flammable gasses and heat to make a much more workable condition for firefighters to work in when they are inside, and to also prevent effects of a flashover (note: If you are already seeing signs of rollover, you should not ventilate as to prevent risk of introducing O2 to the stoichometric ratio of gasses inside the room), and finally to slow down the process of the fire spreading to other rooms (done by controlling the windows for horizontal ventilation. The point of origin where the fire started went to the next room where the window was open (bottom left to right). At that point there is already smoke building up in the room where the fire started (bottom left), aswell as the other rooms up top. At that point you should start vertical ventilation to release flammable gasses up and out of the building without exposing it to heat, and this works because the flame is downstairs is nowhere near the ventilation hole, and fire goes to the path of least resistance, and that's through the window that is already open. And while doing that you should already be trying to suppress the fire in the room where the window is already open (bottom right). This should be done so that the fire has a harder time spreading upstairs towards the other two rooms (hoping the doors are closed to ensure a physical barrier between the fire and the fuel). If the top floors are already engulfed in flames, it would be pointless to do vertical ventilation above a room that is already on fire, as you would be adding oxygen to the mix. At this point, you would be considering other types of ventilations or attack/defense.
@jacobbraun8644
@jacobbraun8644 7 жыл бұрын
JB91710 your argument is invalid he said you don't vert vent till after suppression and immediately after suppression the whole objective when vertical ventilating is the planned systematic removal of hot toxic gases and replace with fresh air. You are correct if you just vent with no water your screwed your going to save the mail box that's it.
@JB91710
@JB91710 7 жыл бұрын
Jacob What is the point of vertically venting After the flames and heat have Stopped being produced? On every video comment they are saying the reason for vertical venting is to release the heat from below so it is safer for the fire fighters to fight the fire. You want to vent the windows in the fire rooms ONLY and extinguish the room from the outside and then go in when it is safer for everybody. Done properly, the water will go in and the heat, smoke and humidity will go out the top of the window. If you are inside and find a burning room, you want the heat, smoke and humidity taking a direct route out the window. If you are sure of the fires location and the window is open, you can PPV the front door and help to push it out. Even if you get a flow from the lower levels through a hole in the ceiling and out the roof, you have no control over that flow. There is only One exit. With windows, you Can control the direction of the hot gasses by which windows you open. From the fire location Directly out of the house not through it. The VAST majority of videos show indiscriminate VV with no coordination at all. They do it for the excitement of it not for its value. Don't believe it works because someone told you it works. Don't LOOK at the signs and USE them to convince yourself its working. Make the signs convince YOU that they at a result of VV. Make instructors Prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that it works. Because a fire fighter is convinced VV works, when something changes inside a house they attribute that to VV when it could have been a window opening. It cleared up a little! It Must be from VV! It Works!

JB91710 I see your point sir but in some applications it is necessary and works the way it is suppose to but I will do more research to prove you point further. @JB91710
@JB91710 7 жыл бұрын
Jacob Thank you but there is no need to call me sir. Be real careful with researching a solution to a problem. Don't think that because information comes from an instructor, Professional or so called expert, that it is right. Have confidence in your own ability to use common sense and logic to find an answer. The most important thing Anybody should do in their lives is to Think For Yourself! How many comments from Civilians have you read that said, Where's the water? Why is it taking so long to put water on it? They are RIGHT! Todays fire service has made FFing so complicated that they save water application for Last instead of first or second. They Vertically Vent everything whether it could use it or not, if it worked! They walk right past visible burning material to go inside to fight the fire from the inside out. When they get in there, they cant find it or cant extinguish it so they come back outside but by then the fire is bigger and has progressed deeper into the house and usually the attic..

Mike Demiduk You prevent flashover by spraying the ceiling as you go to cool the gasses as you go through the house to find what's burning. Everything else is playing.

Without suppressing the fire first, and you just start knocking things open and leaving doors open the fire is gonna spread. Fire goes in the direction of oxygen. Eliminate the oxygen from the fire and you take the fire out.

you know how you can have non-flammable buildings in America... use bricks instead of wood it's only a bit more expensive but it's stronger and is actually tornado proof also so no more people will lose their homes.
