I recently found I had 3 cases of these that I had stashed away for Y2K prep which means they were over 20 years old. They looked like new but I had to use a pliers to get the lids off. I had a stock pot and found that 5 of these would fit in the bottom and put out a lot of heat when lit but the flames did not come close to reaching the top. All could be put out at once by just putting the lid on the pot. I'm sure that just a grill to put on top would make it easy to use to cook upon.

Nice to know they lasted so long, probably because they are in a can. Y2K, the good old days, prepping for months, and nothing happened. Thank you, Lord. We threw open the cupboard and ate our way through the food. I had red Valentine candles bought on sale for 10 cents that I used for romantic dinners for 15 years!

Save the cans so they can be refilled. Denatured alcohol is clean, and leaves not soot. You'll have alcohol burners if you keep refilling them. :)

You can carefully pop the wick platecap off...however I would drill a ring of little holes around the wick, and one bigger one without removing the cap. You can fill it slowly in under a minute a little at a time. The ring of holes will bloom like a $50 backpacker alch stove will. You'll get a hotter flame too. Boil a cuppa in 5 minutes You can reseal it if fuel remains. A 1" pot stand of metal flashing with holes can be cut that will fit on the outside of your can for storage.

Those little can heaters can be refilled with alcohol. Use a syringe to inject through the wick. Or drill a small hole near the wick, squirt in the alcohol, then close the hole with a small sheet metal screw. Of course all this is done when the can is cool and the wick is not burning ... obviously. There is no problem with alcohol mixing with dimethyl glycol. Heet (yellow bottle) is probably the best choice for alcohol.

As a part of my plans I like chafing fuel for simmering to save my more limited butane fuel for boiling water. Its also safer to store and use chafing fuel indoors since it is made for this.

The label says it is DEG, which is Diethylene glycol. It splashes around like alcohol, and has a wick for burning. Sterno is a gel and doesn't make any splashing sounds or have a wick. I figured the price is right for another cooking or heating option in an emergency, or keeping foods warm at a cookout.
