Tbh this is a really good analysis. Practicality is important when designing a character however in real life most people wear things purely because they like wearing them and not because it’s practical. There’s nothing practical about jewelry of any kind but people still wear it because they like it so why can’t fantasy characters do the same?

The loops in his hair could be a sign of strength in his culture since they must be heavy! Those who wear them are seen as powerful and intimidating and the more a person has, supposedly the stronger they are. However this could become a trend with those in the lower classes who cannot collect heavy metal loops etc. but who use light weight materials or plastics in an attempt to make themselves look stronger than they are. So oftentimes you see urchins running in the streets with tiny plastic loops braided into their hair (similar to how beads would be) in an attempt to look tough. :)

Like, where is the practicality in widening your earlobe and putting a hoop inside? The heavy ring in his hair balances out the strain on his neck and right shoulder caused by his artificial arm. It's part of a carburetor to his grandfather's favorite car. The same car he and his beloved grandfather crashed in one night. Ty survived, with injuries to his arm. His grandfather was not so lucky. Ty continued to be a street mechanic in honor of him and kept the ring hanging over his heart to remind him. Also, he hangs things on it that his right hand can't hold while his left hand is busy. The other rings in his hair are not nearly so heavy and just balance out his look.

Yes, functionality is an important part, yet when you design a character you also got to have in mind that it is, in fact, a *character* with their own back story, likings etc. We like to style our hair so why wouldn't this character like so too? Having a purely functional design for a person always takes away from their "humanity" and personality, in my opinion. We like to do random shit purely out of 'aesthetic', so let made up characters have that liberty too and go wild :D

I have a decent backstory for the prosthetic arm. He was a traveler in the Japan / Korea region trying to make money by selling things that he had found on his adventures. On an adventure to find a mystic artifact that rested deep underground and surrounded by treasure, Ty Tanium was cornered by a legendary beast known to show no mercy to the people who try an enter the cavern. With only a few weapons, a mastery over Kendo and Taekwondo to his name, he tried to escape. Ty Tanium used his skills to dodge the beast’s mighty blows but he got pinned to the cold ground. He struggled to escape the monstrous grip and just barely moved out of the way to dodge what could have been the final blow but not unscathed. The beast had taken part of his forearm clean off. Ty, with a sense of adrenaline, escaped and swore to never return until he was ready. The doctors could only remove the rest of his forearm to stop the infection that had taken place but had no proper prosthetic for the price Ty could pay. He was enraged by this, and with the help of his sister, (maybe a future doll) created his own arm. I hope you like my backstory behind it.

I loved it but thought something was missing, I feel like with steam punk you need a little less clean feel with the skin since you put a weathered look through out everything else. Maybe if you plan to do small changes or a new steam punk soon, to add a scratch or scar and don't be afraid to make it a bit dirty looking. As a side note, I think another reason it showed so much was because of the light skin. Btw love your video and even took your advice and made a doll for my little cousin and she loves it!
