I came here expecting an upload from one of the several Paleo channels I follow, so I was confused and amused upon hearing your voice. I got a history lesson, a seafood recipe, and a monster ecology all rolled into one. Thanks for making this Monday a little more fun.

Awesome video, AJ. Such a fun idea to use exotic prehistoric lifeforms as monsters/creatures in D&D.
@Kargoneth12 күн бұрын
Thank you for this. The resurrection of extinct earth life through D&D is one of my many motivations for making custom stat blocks. This would fit right in. Among my invertebrates, I do have a colossal ammonite. Pretty sure I have some eurypterids and giant anomalocarids somewhere.

Yep, the algorithm found me again. Paleontology, DnD, and Speculative Evolution all in one! That said, one prehistoric critter I'd love to see get the DnD treatment are drepanosaurs, a group of arboreal Triassic reptiles that already kinda sound like a fantasy creature. They had a head and neck like a bird, a body and legs like a chameleon, and a claw at the tip of their prehensile tail.

This gives so many ideas here. Imagine a rare and endangered tree fern forest with giant insects being watched over by Neanderthal Druids. Instead of a hawk companion they might have a giant dragonfly. The Druids are constantly on the lookout for Goblins poaching the giant centipedes for their meat, shells and alchemical parts.

Thanks AJ! I wonder if the Underdark version might be used to craft a helm of dark vision. I'm interested in dragonflies. Their advanced vision, they process information at 3x faster, 180 fps (humans process at 60 fps). Dragonflies are extremely fast.

Imagine riding a giant dragonfly? Stap In! You thought X-wing fighters were cool? HA!
@shakescan13 күн бұрын
@AJPickett that's a great idea! Dragonflies hover and manauver incredibly well. They're often colorful. Giant Dragonflies could have I good armor class and (high speed dexterity bonuses) I really like the idea. Imagine how difficult they would be against horses, calvary. Cool idea!

@zacharyweaver27612 күн бұрын
@@shakescan I imagine they'd be used for hit and run attacks dropping stuff on enemies as you zoom by and don't stay in a spot long enough for a mage or elven archer to get a bead on you
@shakescan12 күн бұрын
@@zacharyweaver276 good points for sure regarding mage or elf archery. Which could counter it. I was thinking about how quietly and suddenly they could attack, over rough terrain. And they're so fast they could avoid normal countermeasure. But mages and elven archers could set up a trap for them. That's interesting. Good point.
