3:28 this makes me think a setting with electrical equipment could attract these guys like sharks who attack boat engines or electrical cables. Could be fun for a modern campaign where electricians are dealing with these creatures swarming telephone wires or power stations or you get a plot with a gnome building some whacky power generator and volts are swarming out of the hillside because of the electrical signal

There's a joke about 9 volt batteries in here somewhere, but I'm too tired to find it. Psionic volts would be perfect for a Dark Sun campaign. Thanks for all the lore.
@tomkerruish29822 күн бұрын
Benjamin Franklin called his assortment of Leyden jars a "battery" because he thought it resembled an array of armaments. Perhaps a nine volt battery could be an attack squad. Thinking on it, "battery" would be a fitting collective noun for volts, much as "murder" for crows and "unkindness" for ravens.

I just double-checked Pathfinder 1st edition. The Volt made it into that game system as well. I can’t find any way to use one as a Druid’s animal companion, but I think I may just have to homebrew an aberrant companion feat.

These monsters sound like a great native creature for the elemental plane of air. Assuming there's a section where there's plenty of lightning storms and if they aren't native it can make a great quest when they start an infestation there because of one slipping through a portal left by a careless wizard and now the djinn are putting bounties on them for adventurers to slay

Maybe my favorite part was the explanation of these creatures needing to be struck by lightning within a short time of their birth. I get uncomfortable just being in a parking garage and looking straight down outside it from a high level. I don't know how I would handle having to seek out lightning on purpose.

Oh no, terrible variant idea, even before you suggested: an electrophage! A subspecies of Volt, that feeds on the electricity of your nerve signals. It attaches to a piece of uncovered or just lightly covered skin, and then bites. The Moment it bites, you immediately get numb and one round later you're paralized, due to the Volt absorbing almost all the electrical Impulses from your nerves (so you usually don't even feel the bite). Unless it's close to dying from Hunger, it usually only leaves the signals, that keep the victims vital functions, like Heartbeat and breathing, going, so the victim doesn't die, though it can cause shortness of breath. If a victim is awake, it feels similar to experiencing sleep paralysis. The bite wounds of such an electrophage Volt are particularly nasty, as it bites again and again, digging deep into the flesh, in an efford to make the victims nerves downright spark with signals to the brain about the damage, all of which the Volt absorbs. Some Volt may also introduce a panic attack in the victim in order to feast on the electric discharges of the nerves. The Volt detaches and leaves, once it's sated, causing most victims to immediately go into shock due to all the nerve signals returning at once, overloading the brain. If the victim survives the shock and potentially high blood loss, the wounds this subspecies of Volt leaves behind are deep, the raw flesh torn and shredded to the point of resembling minced meat, and therefore prone to infections, and take a long time to heal properly without the help of restorative magic, leaving behind terrible scars.

I'm just going to throw this out that a lot of these weird creatures are a result of mass extinctions _not_ happening in the game world. There were lots of bizarre creatures hundreds of millions of years ago that we still puzzle over.

It’s an interesting thought that they discharge as a form of communication. That could be very useful. I think I am going to keep the blood-sucking as part of their feeding. That prevents them growing out of control. That would make them something akin to a lightning leech. You even got around to what I was thinking towards the end of the video. I can already see a blue kobold chieftain setting up volt-feeders throughout his territory to protect it from the bigger people around it, like a primitive electrified fence of lightning-leeches. Imagine the horror of falling into a pit trap with a volt-feeder at the bottom of it or wandering down a passageway and seeing the lighting arcing ahead of you where dozens of volts are gathered around one. The kobolds, with half-blue ancestry, might be entirely immune to the volts, but you aren’t. My players are really going to start hating you, AJ. You keep giving me the ideas that fuel their nightmares.

I know this sort of might not be how they normally work, but I personally like the idea of the shocking sting being able to stun, or otherwise incapacitate, a target, which could then allow the creature to close in, and suck their blood safely. I honestly sort of like the idea of some of these critters lingering in a blue dragon's lair, and either dealing with things that then never manage to approach the wyrm, or if I stick with their stunning ability, being able to fumble up an attacker's attempts to fight the dragon, who wouldn't mind then crushing whatever had the audacity to intrude? Maybe it would even detect their electrical "excitement", at the approach of prey, which would clue it in it might have company, aside from using its senses. I might make a note of that, as I tend to feel like a blue dragon might be more the type to keep such servants, and security, around, instead of just embracing every visitor, and having to fight.
@zacharyweaver2762 күн бұрын
Yeah the whole point of a dragon having minions and guard beasts in their lair is to deal with adventurers or soften them up before they reach it so they don't need to deal with every level one party that reaches them
@tatsusama3192Күн бұрын
I had a funny thought of having an intelligence cap as to what attracts these creatures. Maybe one or two of the party members always get advantage against attacking them because the creatures can't sense their lower neural activity😂

The bulk of the material in the first edition came from the British gaming magazine White Dwarf, rather than being authored by Gary Gygax, the game's co-creator. Readers and gamers had submitted creatures to the "Fiend Factory" department of the magazine, and the most highly regarded of those appearing in the first thirteen issues were selected to be in the publication.

How do restoration spells technically work - how does the magic technically work (i.e., in the same sense that the Dark Side of the Force is used to restrict someone's airways telekinetically)?
