But when Movies like Dor, angry Indian goddess, parched, English Vinglish, Tumhari sullu, queen, magalir mattum(Tamil) and many more such movies just get recognitions only in critically acclaimed awards or in some movie festivles and not in theatres I feel bad. There where many occasions when I went to theatres to watch a good movie and the show has to be cancelled due to lack of audience.This has happen even with a national award winning movie.Just because they do not show enough sex appeal. And the movie does well too in the box office because of all the hype since people end up watching it at least see what all the noise is about. Remember kabhi alvida na kehna? If you find "true love" or ever just plain old love outside the institution of marriage, why don't you behave in a civil and respectful manner and simply give a divorce? This was one of my favorites and a perfect HOT mess movie, I played it all day and it’s like it’s real life and won’t get bored. It showed daily struggles of women in both stages of life, one searching and the other settled, the two main actresses were average or random in the industry but compliment each other so well, at first I was upset with the ending or those that got kiIIed but realized the two in the middle always get caught up. Real life is messy. The clean, morally justified ending you want is what we all deeply want in our own lives too.. but how often does this happen? We've all done shitty things. This movie shows the cycle of pain we are all constantly in. Even Dolly knows what she did is not right. I read comments saying "cheating does not equal freedom".. Yes but the movie doesn't say that either.. it's trying to show how stuck people can get in their life and how messy and even difficult it is to get out.. and people get hurt. Naively saying "just get a divorce" is not that easy.. especially in our culture where divorce is so stigmatized.. and people shaming you. (even men are stigmatized for being divorced). We don't know how Dolly and her husband got into this marriage and but we know she and her husband tried the ideal path of trying to make it work.. well it didn't and it got messed up like it does in real life! Anyone who makes this about Dolly cheating didn't get the message. She only lived for others, she forced herself to stay with her husband even though she didn't love him because guess what, that's what society wants women to do, especially in India. You see her cheating, I see her husband harassing her sister and calling naughty hotlines behind his wives back instead of communicating with her. Also, just ending a marriage sounds easy in theory, but it is not. It takes time to get to the point where you realize it doesn't work and I think they had a wonderful way of showing Dolly's journey to get there. It's not about promoting cheating but it shows what pretentious marriages and lives can lead to. It teaches us to be true to ourselves. Because if Dolly would have lived her life the way she wanted to, she wouldn't have been in that situation. Please try to read between the lines instead of seeing one small thing and then trashing the whole movie, a movie that IS about women empowerment. But this comment section shows that it's still a long way until we get there.

It is counterproductive. The movie indirectly glorifies disloyalty and irresponsible behavior. Had the gender roles been reversed, the movie would receive much outrage. Yes, it's true that if a man does it usually nobody bats an eye, but women are rebuked for it - but two wrongs don't make a right. As a woman, I can say that this is not the best example of women's empowerment.
