Dolly Sods- Northern Loop Hike: Bear Rocks, Rocky Ridge, Dobbin Trail

This video takes us through our first trip to the Dolly Sods Wilderness in West Virginia. On our day hike at Dolly Sods, we decided to take a hike on a northern loop that featured Bear Rocks Trail, Raven Ridge Trail, Rocky Ridge Trail, and then Beaver View Trail and back. This trail was 11.5 miles and we spent about 8 hours on the trail that day. The Dolly Sods wilderness in the Monongahela National Forest is a great place for backpacking or day hiking.

I wish I would’ve seen your video before our trip last summer! Where the beaver dam flooded the trail, we went right instead, and wound up having to bushwack below the dam (not ideal). Curious, when you went upstream to cross, did you notice any campsites there? We were hoping to camp there for the night.

Love that place, did a three day hike there about 12 years ago now. It's like a slice of Alaska in West Virginia, the environment is very similar to what you'd find in northern Canada or Alaska. Or perhaps more like what the Appalachians would have looked like during the last Ice Age - few trees and wind/rain heavily weathering down the sandstone rocks. Stay on the trails, though. That area was used during WWII as a mortar range, and there is still a lot of unexploded ordinance up there.
