In the previous Triads lesson here - • Dominant Chords Triads... - I didn't spend much time explaining why this works. In this video, I am expanding on this topic by teaching why this creates the Mixolydian mode (85% of it, to be exact...)
You may think, "it could also be Lydian or Lydian Dominant". Well not in this case, because the whole idea here is that the chord has already been established as a Dominant chord, and I'm sticking to the modes only. Yeah, the Lydian Dominant is super cool, but the triad here goes from root chord UP, 1 whole-step. In this lesson, I'm going DOWN a whole step from the root chord. That's why the end result is the Mixolydian.
As a side note, it to you go down a whole-step from the root chord triad, and play an augmented triad, THEN you get the Lydian Dominant. Cool!
Major triads are great to use over Dominant chords. Even though the Dominant 7 chord has a minor 7th, it does have a major 3rd, which means you can play a major triad for this chord. A sweet triad pair appears when you move the triad down a whole-step. In this case, we play A major triad and G major triad - both will work fine over the A7, A9, A11 or A13 chord. Check it out! Very simple, and very powerful. You can do this on any Dominant 7 chord that doesn’t have any altered notes.

Hi Robert, thank you for all the great lessons you uploaded on KZbin. It seems to me that you are a master in the 'hidden' know hows of the guitar, more than that you are able to explain it in an understandable way. Congratulation. Öcsi Baranyi.

Cool idea when thinking of position options. But I find it easy to think of Mixo as key of the IV, or D in this case. You are a great teacher and give different options and approaches!

Thank you for this lesson master. I'm shocked how triads mixolidian Can be used on blues patterns. I enjoyed that. I wish to extend (in the future) this way to play in dissonances approches. I stand by for next video. You are actually make me grow man.

Would it be right to say A and G are the 4 and 5 of D, making A the fifth or Mixolydian mode of D?

@@nunca112 Good. Thanks! It's just been easier for me to think "G" is 4 of "D" so "G Lydian" is a "D" scale starting on "G", rather than trying to remember what is sharped in what mode. In fact, until I saw it that way, I NEVER understood modes, and as soon as I figured that out, I understood them immediately. It might help to add that explanation for people with Up-side-down brains like mine. Thanks again for your reply!

@@GeorgeRebeiroMusic-o5w A Mixolydian has the same notes as D Major. Both have 7 notes. B Minor Pentatonic has 5 notes, so it's not the same. Look at it this way: if you leave out C# and G from the D Major Scale, you have B Minor Pentatonic.
