I love the sound of "wider interval triads", which is something Eric Johnson often uses, hence the name of this lesson.
It's a simple concept really: play a triad, but move one of the notes to a different octave. That's it in a nutshell.
Now, you should explore this concept further. You see, you can reorganize these notes. Moving the 3rd to the upper octave isn't the only option. What does it sound like if you play the triad with, for example, this formula: 5th - m3 - root, where the root is an octave higher?
Try that with an E minor triad, for example (B-G-E):
Play 5th interval: 9th fret on D string
Play minor 3rd interval: 8th fret on B string
Play root: 12th fret on E string
Cool yeah? Start exploring this stuff - it's fun and can lead some really hip chord voicings! Do this with 7th chords next!
Want more? For members on MGA, I have a fun course on these triads, using 3 different string sets, and with Soundslice exercises and 5 licks. There is a thorough lesson explaining this concept deeper, and neck diagrams are included.
When you are ready to learn with me:
Go to www.masterguit...
I teach music theory, blues, rock, funk, country, scales, chord, triads... and much more.
My website lessons come with Soundslice, which makes it incredibly easy to learn. Both tab and video are synced together in one view on the screen.

Hello Robert! I like what you do ! The triads that you explain here (E.J.`s Triads) are actually Drop 2 Chords from Inversion 2 of the Em aeolian scale. For example the Eminor voicing you use here is E H G which is the Drop 2 from the 2nd Inversion of the E G H Triad. ( Root Position Em = E G H, Inversion 1= G H E, Inversion 2 = H E G ) Build the Drop 2 Chord from the 2nd Inversion which means play your second note of your Inversion 2 and we got that E H G Triad. Thanx for all your wonderful lessons, Robert !

Awesome as usual. If it helps someone, another way to explain what you’re doing is that you’re playing a harmonized scale using D-shape triads. The only difference is that you play the root one ocatave lower on the D-string instead of the B-string. Anyway, great trick, sounds killer.
