Crazy how the engine tuning scene has progressed in 25 years. Back in late 90s turbo stuff was almost like black magic, only specialized tuners knew how it all worked. Nowdays every 18 year old kid knows that with extra boost an additional fuel is needed. Nowdays almost every car guy can put together working turbcharged engine and can even learn proper ECU tuning online. Same with car audio, back in 90s and early 2000s amps were like $ per watt, nowdays some 1000w amps are like $150. Feels like i'm turning into my dad who constantly boasts how everything back in his day was difficult and "your generation has everything too easy".

"can learn" is a lot different from actually learning. Finding car guys that taught themselves how to tune is very uncommon. It's more typical to take a car to a tuner to have it done, even with cars that have plug-in stage tuning like Cobb. At cars and coffee type meets it's a lot of newer cars with the hoods down and the owners don't know anything.

Give those kids these days the same equipment and technology of that era and they have no idea what to do. This movie sparked the entire car scene with numerous company’s trying to profit of it. That and the fact that cars just became much more easily tunable with all the electronics controlling everything. Not true, Only a idiot with no idea would not understand that an engine needs three things Air, fuel and spark. if increased air needs increased fuel and also that means stronger well timed spark. A piston engine is a lot more tolerant and not a sensitive as a rotary. Fuel and spark need to addressed immediately in a rotary,

One car you won't be able to find, let alone purchase that was in the first two F&F movies is the hero one R33 Skyline. Also known as "Big Bird". That car sadly ended up being crushed due to being seized by the FEDs for being one of the MotoRex cars that fell into that whole drama scandal.

I always LOVED how this car Sat on the road. That specific Veilside Body Kit, the fixed Headlights ,GT Wing and suspension give this a ride height that is Nigh on PERFECT. Visually, this car for me is the best looking iteration of Trim and Body pieces for an FD RX7. Yes,the Graphics and wheels are a touch dated by todays standards. However, you could easily swap a righteously good looking set of BBS wheels on that ,and at least remove the rocket ship section of the graphic, and link up the silver streaks from the Front of car. And yes, even though the sound was dubbed in, I think that a swapped RX7 FD would have been a reasonable candidate for the Street Racing and Import Tuner crowd back then. Example.. (Someone prior Maybe buys it new ,cooks the original Rotary it came with or they find it in a salvage yard as a supposed write off and Dom and crew are like , lets fix it & shoe-horn a Turbo Inline 6 in it and hit the streets.) I just found Han's Veilside to be Too Gaudy and overdone by way of making a Widebody and using those Ridiculous Wayyyy oversized wheels. That FD looks like it was built by someone filthy rich with an UNLIMITED budget.... Not somebody ,street racing what he Has and earns upgrades with his Winnings. Minus the wheels and main rocket ship section of the graphics ,Dom's RX7 looks EONS better to Me than Han's and more realistic as an Actual Street Racer that someone has Built themselves over time. That Orange Veilside FD is basically, a half million dollar esque styled, Sema Show Trailer Queen, build that got a Movie role and I am not a fan of that car For that reason.

90's street race scene, I NEVER seen cars with those kinda graphics on them. If anything they had manufacturer names or club names on the windows or along the sides, but that too was rare. Paint schemes were simple or styled after Touring Racing cars of the time. Majority imports were slammed . Most people racing concentrated their money more on performance parts not so much flash. That's what I saw in the 90's in Long Beach

Great stuff here! Love the RX-7. Couple of production location questions for you Craig. During filming of Race Wars there at the San Bernardino airport, it had just closed as an Air Force Base just a few years prior. At the time of filming, was there much aviation activity actually going on at the airport, or did the production have the run of the ramp area as much as they needed? In the Charger/Supra race scene at the end, I know you mention how the train was not real and was added, which makes sense seeing that area….no way a train is going through there at that speed. But also in that location, what was all the aerial piping seen running parallel to the street; and those green wall looking things next to the road? Were those some kind of asses props for the set? Or covering something up?

The airport was still running for military aircraft but we had most of the ramp area to ourselves. I didnt see the area before they started shooting but the pipeline was definitely already there before we picked that location. because i remember seeing them when I used to go to Terminal Island to drag race. As for the green 'wall', I'd have to look at the scene again in 4K but IIRC they were boxes off the back of truck trailers. I looks very different today

That featurette is also on my Fast 1 dvd though, the 1 that came out before 2 Fast 2 Furious when they decided to add a prelude story that sets the plot for the upcoming in theaters 2F2F. Look up copys of Fast 1 called "The All New Tricked Out Edition" I bought that before 2F2F was even released in theaters. They may have decided to reuse it for the 2nd movie's features too.

Started going to race tracks 20 plus years ago …never for drag but road course…have many cars now …okay car list …2 R35 2014 black Edition 2017 track edition/ 4 911’s all now collector stuff but tracked everyone..last one I got is GT2RS..yes I’ve been called insane but really? That’s what it was built for! Corvette C6 ZR1 stupid fast on Hoosiers but GM make seats that suck so changed seats put proper seat belts and changed steering wheel… and of course wrx sti full caged race car 620hp sequential trans … you mentioned noise level …at my closest track it’s now 92 decibels max! Obviously it sucks and even stock not modified cars fail…I’m in Canada but was wondering if this is an issue in the US ? Drive a Yukon daily lol
