350 hp is definitely believable. The engine is about 24% larger at 1.6L as opposed to the last 1.3L. That Renesis engine made 238hp from 1.3L 20 years ago. Even assuming no advancement and the same output per liter, that would equate to about 295hp. Add to that small electric motors and I believe 350 is not a problem achieving. At just under 3000lbs, it would also be right on target with previous RX-7s competing with Nissan Z and Toyota Supras with less power, but equal performance and a lighter, more sports car feel and handling.

350hp between 1.66l rotary and electric motor seems feasible. The Renesis (rx8) made 232hp as an NA 1.3l so the increased displacement plus the electric motor makes the 350hp estimate realistic. I doubt we see a turbo for this application but would welcome it :)

I’ve had a 79 FB, 2 93 FDs and currently still have a 2007 RX-8. As much as I have enjoyed rotaries, the main appeal of these cars have been the overall balance. The rotary has been a big part of them, but I’d take a great sports car a little beefier than and MX-5 even without a rotary.

Rotary is just too unreliable past 100k as cool as they are.

Kirk, The car looks great but as I recall, these Mazda rotary engines burned massive amounts of oil. I can't understand what the fuss is all about. 🤔

@abracing1992 ай бұрын
They burned oil by design, there was a dedicated pump to supply oil to the combustion chambers. Who cares if they burned oil anyway? The gt350 mustangs go through a quart every 1k miles and you don't see people crying about those.

Power density and fun. They make a lot of power for their size and weight. Rotary engines also need to be wrung out to high rpm to use the power and clean the carbon buildup.

If an engine does not burn oil, it aint no fun!

Wankel displacement works a bit different than on a regular piston engine. It's not just 1.66 liter, due to a different combustion cycle. The workable volume is twice that, so about 3.2 liters.

I sadly will (likely) never be in the market for a car like this. But man would I love to see people enjoying cars like these. Maybe this could additionally makes its way into a family sedan or wagon? One could only hope.

honda and toyota used to pair hybrid vehicles to manuals all the time in the early days of mass market hybrids, the most recent example i can think of is the honda cr-z which is an incredible and hugely overlooked cool car

My 1994 RX7 weighs about 2800 pounds with about 255 horsepower and it's a really fun car. My only complaints are lack of cargo space and emissions, it's pretty smelly compared to modern cars. A new RX7 weighing 3000 pounds with 350 hp would be great, especially if it does include front motors for regen and torque vectoring. Personally I would like to see some sort of plugin hybrid so I can drive 5 or 10 miles without needing to burn any gasoline, and I don't mind the idea of using the rotary as a range extender without it being connected to the wheels. But I agree with the others who said they aren't getting their hopes up until we can actually buy one.

A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success.

I worry that they will get this wrong if they do go ahead with it, if they are to make a 4th generation rx7 it needs to be light, RWD only and manual. I'm not sure the 1.6 even with the motors would cut it if it's meant to be a competitor with the likes of the Supra and Nissan Z. If this is an RX9 however, it would make more sense to make it a higher end car with the assist motors etc but then it need to be able to put out at least 400HP so I don't see why they can't do a 3 rotor hybrid since it's unlikely they will use a turbo setup.

The fender logo looks like a rotor. I approve Though the rear end looks a bit like they are trying to hard to look like a corvette. They should have tried to keep it looking like the late model 7's. I'm not a fan of that rear end. Front end does look mean though.

the Typo on the rear wil do... btw I hope they're going with the physical button and knobs on the middle console.

I actually like the idea of a hybrid 2 rotor setup. Instant tq from the eletric motor and the high rpm from the 2 rotor; best of both worlds. Obviously a turbo new design 3 rotor engine would have been better but can't have everything. 😊

I love these name plates are returning. I do feel RX 9 would be well excepted as long as it's closer to its roots than the RX 8. With the mx 5 in the line up, I could see 44995 as a starting place. It is sad that it can't just be a tuners dream car though, it sounds super tech heavy.
@cellshaded2 ай бұрын
350ps sounds about right from a 1.66L Rotary engine. The 1.3L makes about 200ps from decades ago. Tech improvements and the increased displacement would easily make up the extra 150hp. Nevermind the hybrid system on top. This car will be exciting if it comes out with 6MT!

It really looks like an evolution of the third generation RX-7 utilizing the Kodo design parameters. It looks like a Mazda. My dream would be a sub $50k 300-400hp RX-7, better yet, a sub $40k with 300hp that weighs under 3,000 lb. I know that would compete with the MX-5 and won’t market,‘it’ll have to go up market from the MX-5, but the RX-7 was always an affordable sports car, costing less than Corvettes and lower end German sports cars, while being sharper edged and lighter than competing Japanese sports cars. There is space for that in the market. And my goodness I’d love to see it have a manual transmission.

The car is looking really good, I like the return of the pop up headlights. Kinda sad that they've made it a 2 seater, not like the 2+2 it used to be. Even tho the back seats wouldnt be very useful, but more space + looks better

11:32 250 hp seems pretty low. The 1.3L RX-8 output 238hp back in 2004.

Yeah, 250hp is low. But if the car is light enough it may put out better power to weigh ratio still low tho

I love how they didn't even go with the RX-9 but instead chose RX-7. The RX-7 had three generations before they switched to the RX-8, which, to be honest, enthusiasts didn't embrace as much. I’d argue this new model should be the next RX-7. Also, I prefer a logo over a typed-out font; it feels like everyone is using typed-out fonts these days.

Cool! I'd prefer a simple series hybrid with a motor for each wheel for torque vectoring and no transmission or drive shaft, but this still looks great!

This car is at the very top of my desirability list for new vehicles. This. Not an SUV. Take note manufacturers. This is what is actually desirable. Midlife crises everywhere are saved thank you Mazda for this. Please do not axe those flip up lights. Please keep it in the final product.

Hopefully this car will come with a manual transmission option and won't be a hybrid. I dont want a rotary if its just designated to generator duty

The verdict will be in after we've driven this car. ZMazdaS,... Or the "3" initially feels too light, hollow 6 AG's cheap... But as you drive it you get used to this feel she noticed the fun. Not sure if it's the same for slightly heavier RX7... Or will the weight make a difference and make it seem more solid.. More light

I have a suggestion for Mazda. Make the normal versions the same engine in the Miata but turbo charged from factory with an iron block the other version could be a traditional Rotary but make it very apparent the risk and maintenance for it and have people sign for it knowing the disclaimers. Allow it to run the same transmission from the Miata as well so parts are interchangeable. You need a sports car that’s solid other then the Miata this is how I’d assume it would pan out

If they build the RX-7 or RX-9, I hope they use a traditional large-size round, red-colored analog gauge and the RX-7 names instead of MAZDA in the rear end. Make Wing's open door, like Lambo and MaLaren, that others don't dare to do. Be different and extraordinary if they want to sell a sports car.
@rightwingsafetysquad98722 ай бұрын
It looks like a forward engined version of the Lotus Emira and I love it. I kinda hope they don't pursue what the FD RX-7 was. Just make the performance better than a CTR and as fun as an 86. Everything that does what the FD did is super expensive now. I want to be able to afford one.
