Domain Name System (DNS) Troubleshooting - League of Legends Player Support

Think of Domain Name System (aka DNS) as an address book for the internet. It tells your computer where to go when browsing or gaming online. Sometimes these settings can get borked causing lag in game and patching issues.. This video will show you how to properly configure these settings for League of Legends.

I just moved into my new house with wifi already set up. Played for about 3 years on my macbook at my old place. It won't let me log into LoL and gets stuck on login status: authenticating... I figured the problem had to be from the DNS settings but my DNS servers are already set to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 wondering what else might be the issue, if nothing has changed but me moving locations.

Using Google's DNS is bad practice for a lot of reasons, perhaps most obvious of which being the fact that Google logs every request you make through their DNS. It can be fine for troubleshooting whether or not your usual DNS is down, but generally you shouldn't use a public DNS if you can avoid it. Also, while some ISPs log your traffic, in particular in America, the rules are different in Europe and possibly elsewhere. As someone living outside of America, you might not want to freely hand over your browsing habits to Google to use for advertising purposes without any second thoughts.

To return your DNS server to the default, go to the options for IPv4 (1:19 in the video) and click the button labeled "Obtain DNS server address automatically." Click okay to close the window, then okay again to save the settings and close your internet configuration settings. A reboot may be required for the changes to take proper effect* *this is a simplified tip, but if you're an average user this should work just fine.

If you change your DNS you won't be able to use the web interface of your router / WLAN repeater any more. Just keep that in mind and change the DNS settings back to default if you want to access your router's web based setup page.

Why would DNS affect your in-game latency? That claim makes no sense, unless the game servers: 1. have a domain name, and 2. need to resolve it again and again for every (or every other) packet.

It only makes sense that DNS should impact patching and logging in. Maybe the out-of-game client as a whole too, if the resolver is particularly slow. If this assumption is wrong, I'd love for someone to point out why/how.

Right-click your network icon in the lower-right corner of your windows taskbar and go to network- and sharing center. From there, everything should be the same as in the video. I would advise against using a public DNS server permanently; they should only ever be used for troubleshooting purposes to test whether your default DNS server is having problems. Using a public DNS server may have negative effects on your ping, and gives third parties the ability (and in many cases, implicit permission) to track and use your internet browsing habits.

Because your PC is now going through an American DNS every time it wants to resolve a hostname. Using a public DNS is generally a bad choice for a lot of reasons, but can be useful for troubleshooting whether or not your default DNS server is having problems. You should never permanently use a public DNS if you can avoid it.
