Dom leaves the trench line and flies into the Schattenbach Canyon. After leaving the canyon, he performs a corkscrew, which appears to cause him to lose speed. He continues flying to the right, down to the Stolle forest, following the Hinderlaui trench low above the trees. After a flyby over trees at approximately 744 m.a.s.l. (200 m above landing), he continues flying along the terrain, directly above the Chriesistei path. Just above landing at about 80 m (maybe even lower), he initiates a flare with little or no gain in altitude (deceleration instead of flaring). First pull attempt: He reaches back with only his right hand (asymmetric pull) and does not find the handle. Second pull attempt: Due to his asymmetrical position, he rolls slightly to his right and fabric from his arm wing appears to get in the way. He grabs more fabric than handle and performs a pull movement but does not throw the pilot chute. Third pull attempt: Once he reaches back with his left hand as well (symmetrical pull), his right hand gets to the handle and he has a successful pull. PC extracts the canopy from the container but he impacts in a horizontal body position before line stretch (primary stow still in place). Dom appears to remain calm and focused until end. Interpretation and conclusion: Dominik enjoyed every single flight until the very end and often separated late from the terrain. The altitude that he gained from the flare was often needed to get a good pull altitude. On this flight he did not have a Flysight (GPS) with him. A combination of factors contributed to the accident: Loss of speed following his corkscrew after leaving the canyon Late and only marginal separation from terrain Flare was ineffective resulting in the deployment process happening at lower-than-expected altitude First pull attempt: Asymmetric pull results in tilt to right, further loss of altitude. Second pull attempt: He couldn’t get to the pilot chute because of fluttering fabric on his right arm wing (low airspeed and depressurizing wingsuit). Individually, each of these points would probably not have been a problem. In total, they were fatal. Recommendations: Give yourself margin for the unexpected. Don’t depend on a good flare to get reasonable pull altitude. A flare can work 100 times and it can fail on the 101st time. A “no-pull-find” can happen to all of us. Give yourself some margin to deal with it.

Very well explained. I am highly against this sport due to its phenomenally high death rate. The lack of room for error combined with the urge so many participants have to push closer and closer to the edge are simply unforgiving. The lack of time to make use of a reserve chute even if one is present for these jumps means the first failure is often the last. Even if not pursuing the adrenaline rush of skirting the terrain having a chute failure at the flight's conclusion with no reserve or time to deploy one means death. This is a major reason for the far higher death rate in BASE and Wingsuit jumping than Skydiving. Skydiving is 1 death in 18,000 hours of the activity. BASE/Wingsuit is 1 death in 21 hours! When I say I am against it I mean that I believe it is a foolish activity with an unreasonably high risk of death. Life is worth more than an adrenaline rush and KZbin likes. I am not saying people should be banned from doing it, people have a right to make foolish decisions. I may not agree with Dom's decision to pursue this activity but that does not mean I take any satisfaction in his death. It is a tragedy for him and those who loved him.

Google "The Risk of Dying Doing What We Love Chess In The Air" The article is dated Oct 30, 2019 and has the full breakdown of risks by sport with citations. Basically BASE jumping, wingsuit or otherwise, is a 1:500 death rate. The average BASE jump with a wingsuit is 2.5 minutes. That comes out to 1 death every 1,250 minutes of participation, or 1 death every 20.8 hours. It is a pretty terrifying statistic to those who acknowledge their own mortality and value life above fleeting adrenaline rushes and KZbin fame.

I didn't know who he was and it's the first time I've seen him, but 1 minute ago I saw a video of him to which a user asked that these people who do this sport usually live a short life, and he responded: "I'm 42. How old are you?" ?" It is incredible that shortly after I check this channel and I find this video where he has already died. What a sad event, but at least he died doing what he loved. Stop making people who practice this sport doubt, often when we think about death... we find it.

I don't, so I can only speculate. He passed away only a few dozen km from my house. Eventhough we wrote back and forth last year we never cought up. He was right though, as if he knew his time was limited, why meet new people, fans? Better spend precious time with loved ones and alike. Did he have a new chute, anyone? Or did I confuse older vids for new ones? Local news writes [...crashed in the area of the official landing zone...], [...police examining circumstances of the accident...], [...public attorney ordered transfer to forensic medicine...]. Investigation is still ongoing, but most likely his parachute malfunction or he's opened it too late just before landing. His parachute was without line stretch right next to his body close to the main landing area.

Wow! That was a doozy, the color of the rocks gave it a monotone view, from the perspective of the viewer. That was really close to the tree tops, and how you pulled up to gain altitude was proof that you’re flying, for a second I thought you were coming in for a carrier landing! 😂 Always great to watch you D 👍
