He will get in trouble at first but will learn quickly what they can & can’t do outdoors. It is getting through that period of learning that was most difficult for me, because my cat would get stuck on roofs, in trees, in a neighbors garage & I had to hunt to find him each time as he meowed “help me help me”, but like any adolescent he learned & lived to age-18 -which is longer than an ‘indoor only’ cat.

@CM other times we underestimate our cats. Their instinctual memories never really leave. Like you said, they “learn again”. It’s just reawakening their instincts. But growing up, my dad had an indoor cat who lived to age 22. So I must kindly disagree with you there. However, have you seen the movie or read the book Pet Semetary by Stephen King? I’ve had a few cats die 12-14. You grow attached to them. Well Pet Semetary is about a burial ground where you bury your beloved pets. However, they come back evil. Sort of like The Monkeys Paw story. Point is this: sometimes I wish, I think we all wish, there was a pet Semetary that could bring a beloved animal back to life. Just minus the evil, rabid killer part lol

A Vet who is a neighbor of us told us this advice just after Leia, her Burmese indoor cat, got mad after a yearly fireworks feast some years ago. They were newbies in this neighborhood and they didn't know about the feast and nobody around ever imagined they needed to know about it!. Sadly, when the noise abruptly began, the cat found a loose window and escaped. The Vet and her husband searched day by day for a whole week. We cooperated with them. Like we use to say here, "They left their shoes on the street" searching for her beloved pet... It was only when the Vet's Husband decided to go in the community's sewage that he could find her! Starving, dirty and almost dying! Leia recovered pretty much soon, but this is only one of several similar stories I can tell of scared indoor cats. Many are much more tragic.

I was holding my breath when he slid and then jumped down from the roof, what an amazing and brave mancat he is! I’m glad this was a limited excursion whilst on vacation though, as there are too many dangers these days with evil people who hate and harm cats. It’s good for cats to learn some outdoor skills though so if you have to evacuate, they get out and lost they won’t hide and not come out for help. Tommy as usual never does anything without finesse and purpose. 💙💙💙

It is a quiet mountain area, not so dangerous. My parents cat has been going outside basically every day for almost his entire life. He will be 18 soon. The neighborhood is cat friendly, with very little traffic, good routes through backyards, no wild predators. We could never keep him cooped up for long without making him very unhappy. The neighborhood cats also live long, happy lives, with one reaching over 20. The only cat I know that died young had crawled into a laundry machine. I will agree busy cities are dangerous for cats. I could never have taken Grijs with me when I moved, even though we do miss each other. I have also seen missing cat posters here. But there is some nuance to the view of outside cats always being in danger.

Plus in today’s world with all the traffic? People say keeping your animal indoors is cruel. Well letting them wander around a dangerous environment is evil. The wind, or speed of a car, can whisk a dog or cat near traffic. You also have teens who love killing animals just bc. I worked for 5 yrs at the SPCA. While being part of a lot of heart warming moments, I’ve seen and been help to a lot of cruel and horrible ones-90% caused by man. It’s a different environment nowadays. Better to keep your animal indoors, or in the backyard with a secured fence

I shared a house with a woman that had a cat called Tommy. He was 5 years old and was not allowed out because "foxes would get him or someone would steal him or a car would hit him". The woman died and I was left with the cat which I then let out all the time. He is so much happier and healthier 1 year on. Although his outdoor skills were poor at the start he quickly learned all the skills needed. Cats have good instincts and can still survive in the wild much better than most people think.

@@DARWINZOO yes. I’m in Sunnyside queens. I do tnr and care for several feral colonies along with a group of volunteers. Thank you for helping homeless cats. I’m objecting here to the promotion of the idea that jetting your cat escape outside for fun is okay. It even happened today that I was contacted about exactly this - missing cat. And we must put up posters and set traps and Comb the area. Why you think my concern is “my junk” - yes I don’t know Tommy or the owner. But I do know dozens of people who lost cats permanently this way and he has a big following, I adopt out rescues and have had many incidents over the years where loving owners called me to help find their missing cat over “going for a walk” or “ it’s okay if he explores” and lost their cat forever. And I see so much suffering every day with street cats and have had to rehome so many lost pet cats who were clearly not feral and had no chip and no identification and were just on the streets. People follow this channel. I have adopters I know who are first time pet owners and could make this mistake.

Please be careful. My ginger Maine Coon, Marshal Ney, is pretty much an indoor cat. One time he escaped by pushing out a window screen on the ground floor very early in the morning. He was outside for maybe three hours and ended up being cornered by a loose dog (which is a whole other thing). The barking woke me up and I saved him. On another occasion, he got on the balcony, and as cats do, he decided to walk along the outside edge. He fell four stories. Luckily he fell into a bush and on to the soft ground. He was completely unscathed. So, we no longer let him out without being in a cat tent, or on the harness. My friend lost her indoor cat whom she had started letting out for an hour or so, his name was Professor Moon Waffles and he was a sometime playmate of Marshal Ney. An hour is not a long time, but it was long enough, one early evening, to be taken by a coyote. Another friend's indoor cat got out when her idiot boyfriend left the door open. She was missing for 10 days before they found her 4 km away and bearing some wounds from a cat fight. They were lucky to get her back. Be cautious. It is true we want to give our kitties room to explore and cats love being outside. But it is extremely dangerous for even experienced outdoor cats, to say nothing of cats who live indoors and have no training or experience with outdoor hazards. If Cat Tommy can get used to a harness and leash, he will enjoy nice walks. If you have the room, a cat tent or other space is also nice. He should always be supervised.

The terminal velocity of a cat is actually not fast enough to kill a cat. So a cat jumping out of a skyscraper wouldn't die assuming landed on its feet, which they automatically do. Might chip a tooth or break a bone at most. But that's it 😬 feel free to Google stories of falling cats

Oh, Yeah! "Cats always fall on their four legs" says the proroverb. However, what I mean is not any danger due to the race itself! I mean when he will find shelter will probably be in an unknown (for him) terrain, with odors he's never semelled before. He knows nothing about what's going on around him; every noise, every movement might be a menace. As many of the cases that I know, he may remain there, scared to go out for days. Remember, he is not an outdoors cat and not every behavior and knowledge about the streets comes with the instinct, but with a long infancy beside a mother and siblings and peers living on the streets, learning each and every trick. If you were ever placed in a country where nobody knows your language, where you don't know the uses and even more, the environment is perceived as hostile you'd at least be stressed... And we, humans, have a lot of tools to resolve problems that cats not always have. Well, we use inteligible vocal languages, you'd surely try to find somebody to speak a common language... cats that have never been on the streets cannot do it. It is all in the intelligence and the bravery of the particular idndividual. If he fails in one of those elements, he might be lost.

Nice adventure for Tommy but, I would not let him roam. First off, his safety is most important as well as his health. If he encounters stray cats, he could get into a fight and get injured, and if the stray is sick, Tommy could catch things like feline leukemia, ticks, fleas and who know what else. It would be best if you make sure the vet puts a chip in him if he becomes lost or stolen. You are taking a chance you may regret. What if after getting a taste of freedom outside, he becomes restless and expects to be let out? Sorry, but you may be opening a can of worms you wish you'd never opened.

He loved that excursion! Cats don’t just disappear when you let them outside as long as they are happy at home. They know where their dinner dish is. I train them up before letting them out by clicking two plastic bowls together when I feed them ( or any quite loud sound will do) So when you want them back just use the sound to call them back. They usually don’t wander away so far that they can’t hear it. If you have made the Pavlovian association of the sound with food, they’ll come running home when they are hungry.

😂😂 My Coco Bean loves outside, but hates the stray cats that come around. When they come he will just go next door to the neighbors yard and come home by evening time… hungry and tired 🥱 I’m cool with that. But his very first time was so scary…. I didn’t see him for 4 days 😱 I have learned that he wanted me to clear away the strays before he comes back home. My Little Prince 👑 😂😂😂

I have lost 2 cats on such adventures. Both times they were killed by hawks...likely the same hawk. I live in a populated suburb where yards are fenced in. The hawks will watch from a tree nearby and they swoop down from behind the cat (or rabbit, or any small animal). The strike is instant and usually the hawk puts tallons into the cat's neck and eyes. Most people think the only threat to thier cats are dogs and coyotes, but I imagine hawks kill more pets . And you may never see them or know what happens. Usually they lift the cat immediately and fly to the woods with them, you will never find a trace of your dear friend. I lost mine out of a fenced yard and only figured the mystery out later when I saw the hawk take a small raccoon and lift him 50 feet in the air.

He gave off the vibe of a cat that’s been out before. A cat that’s not been out usually acts far more tentatively and explores the immediate surroundings before jumping anywhere, sometimes running back inside and re-emerging to check the safety of home is still there. If that’s his first time out he’s very confident.

I had 4 cats, a calico, a white cat female and another sort of beige male. Those 3 had all the vaccines in the world, in door for the most part, well taken care of. The 4th was a black mixed female feral cat that I had fixed of course, but she was free to roam, she was well fed of course etc. Can you believe she outlived the other 3? There is something to be said for allowing them to roam and exercise and be free! She was healthier in the end than all of them!

Looks like he had a WONDERFUL time! Cats are bonded to their TERRITORY (dogs to their owners), so cats usually ALWAYS get their bearings quickly -- they also have a superb sense of smell -- I mean it's unlikely he will roam far.

My cat was an indoor cat. One day I carried him out and he freaked out. A little later I let him out again and he would do the neighborhood prowl. More and more he would stay out longer and sometimes he wouldn't come home for days. During his home stays I noticed he became lethargic and wouldn't eat. I took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with feline leukemia and had to be put down. If I get another cat I'll never let him out even if FL is preventable. And once your cat gets a taste of the outside they will always want to go out by sitting at the door for you to open it.

My two cats couldn’t wait to get outside to explore the big wide world. My 1 yr old cat Jessie is a good territorial guard cat 🐈, and she makes me laugh sitting on the windowsills chattering and sometimes sitting on the garden wall tapping people on their heads as they walk past.

I personally don't believe in keeping cats indoors! When you lived in a town I could understand, but now there is a LOT of adventure to be had! Cats are bonded to their territory (unlike dogs who bond to their carers), so they will come HOME. PLEASE let Tommy roam free -- now that he's got a taste of it, indoors will never be enough!

I have several cats but I keep them all indoors. There are safer neighborhoods, and this isn't one of them. Loads of traffic, the I-5 60 yards away, lots of attitudinal and aggressive folks, some with mean dogs, and coyotes are seen regularly about a half-mile from here.
when you're living with an extrovert cat 😺 funny Animals 😅
