@@user-ik1fm2dg4c these aren't wild foxes tho. These Russian bred foxes aren't actually TERRIBLY difficult to care for. The most difficult step is setting up some kind of fenced outdoor space for them. So yeah the only really difficult requirements are -have a decently sized backyard -be able to afford chain link fence -dont be stupid and make sure you know the important dietary needs and other small but essential steps you would take for any pet that isn't your basic cat/dog/goldfish The real problem is that the kits themselves are super expensive. @RivkahSong
@RivkahSong 3 жыл бұрын
Oxytocin is a hormone released in the brain. Its function is primarily to do with reproduction (it will induce labor, promote lactation, help in sperm production, etc). As part of it's roll in procreation it also affects social behavior and emotions (because strong family units give a better chance for survival) such as helping induce arousal, social recognition, trust, and feelings of love and affection of all kinds (romantic, platonic, familial, etc). Scientists have found that petting domesticated animals like dogs and cats releases oxytocin in both the animal and the human, leading to both feeling happy, loving, and affectionate towards each other and forming social bonds. They've noticed the same thing beginning to happen in the foxes after several generations of domestication.

@@RivkahSong I read in a book by neurologist Patricia Churchland that oxytocin actually increases hostility to people outside of your own group in a group/team based contest study. That might be a side effect of increased identification with your own group. So paradoxically it might increase racism. It makes abit of sense since prejudiced and nationalistic people tend to be very sentimental.

Be fair, dogs have killed random small birds, lizards, and rodents before I know my dogs have and cats have been responsible for the extinctions of multiple species so really it all relies on the person who gets them, but given that I don’t think anyone would let their fox free roam the neighborhood like they would a cat but still there’s not much of a difference, yeah a pet fox would kill smth but that was guaranteed to happen anyway
@comfortme
@comfortme 2 ай бұрын
not really the same thing though. both cats and dogs battle with the demands of their owners. i can see my cat understands me when i say no, and that may make her hesitate or stop doing something she knows i don’t want her doing. she will even run away, because she doesn’t want to be scooped up. she recognizes commands but cats being cats usually don’t listen. a dog may give you guilty eyes, but some lose control and give into instinct (like hounds). in fact depending on the dog breed; they have different prey drive. a herding dog is bred to be intense but not cause injury, they have the instinct to chase. a hunting dog has the instinct to chase, bite, or even kill. a retriever will chase n bite dead poultry and bring it back to the owner. n of course, dogs who were bred not with purpose but companionship will have varying behavior and instinct depending on who they were bred with. it will be random. in the end, most cats/dogs still know what you want them to do. i think the difference is foxes are completely consumed by instinct and it is predictable to behave as such. for a dog, you expect as much as you know of them. it varies.

You are talking about an animal with about 40 years of domestication vs 50,000 years. Dogs were extremely predatory for the first 20-30 thousand years of domestication before humans did even more selective breeding. Foxes right now are just being domesticated to be non-hostile, To get something like a dog we would have need millions of more foxes breeding to ultra specific qualifications without a chance of positive results.

There's a very distinct reason why you cannot domesticate a fox. It's because of the natural environment and socialabilty of species you're trying to domestic. In general, animals that come from highly social species in the wild make the best pets. Wolves have highly sophisticated social structures. So do chimps. Hence why they both make tame pets. Wolves have something very special. The instinctive ability to recognize alpha and beta pack members. That in of itself makes them man's best friends because once it recognizes you and your family as alpha leaders it won't recognize you as a potential meal. And will obey your commands. And Wolves split from foxes about 12 million years ago. That's 12 million years to develop all the social instincts you want in a pet. Whereas foxes have not. And thats why 60+ years of domestication just won't turn that fox into a dog. Dogs have had a 12 million year head start.

There are lots of domesticated animals besides dogs. Like even guinea pigs are domesticated. From my understanding the traits that make domestication hard are extreme neuroticism and/or very low agreeableness. In these experiments, they are selecting more agreeable less neurotic foxes. I would guess the baseline for those traits in foxes was not so extreme to make domestication impossible unlike previous attempts like the zebra

Chimps are in no way tame, they're much like early humans, they can be nice one moment and rip your face off the next. As well as wild wolf packs don't have the "alpha beta" structure. That structure only happens in zoos. The person who discovered that structure later agreed that it was inaccurate to the way they act in the wild and a horrible example of how they behave, so wolves don't have a natural ability to recognize an alpha. These foxes have been bred to be more friendly and more social with humans, same as wild dogs were. When it comes to selective breeding whether they're social animals or not doesn't really matter since even completely wild and unsocial animals can be socialized and tamed and these have had it bred into them.

Sounds like a total failure so far, dogs did not come from wolves, that is the big problem, Jesus made them a separate tame species
