Fernando Agustin Yes and no. At least at the time. DDR has always had bad step charts that are not fun. All of the challenge comes from forcing you to move inefficiently. That's not fun. ITG made its songs hard in a multitude of ways. Odd, albeit correctly timed notes as in Utopia or Go 60 Go, pure stamina burners like Bloodrush or Summer, or step-hops that are present in multiple songs. These things don't mess with your balance or equilibrium, but they do challenge you. On top of the good step charts, the use of mines from Stepmania, tighter timing windows, % scoring in all modes, note skins that didn't suck, and a bigger higher resolution screen (at least on the dedicabs) made it both distinct and better than DDR. At least that's from my perspective. Everything released after the hostile takeover of Roxor games is irrelevant since I'm merely comparing the two when they coexisted.

Once at a Nomad's when I was 10 I found a DDR machine. I popped a token in and started scrolling down the song list. This particular machine didn't divide the songs into difficulty levels, it just listed them in alphebetical order. I found a catchy-sounding song (which I just realized was asian but I didn't know at the time) and all I knew about DDR was "step on arrow" so I had no idea asian songs had to be balls-to-the-wall difficult by sheer coincidince. It started out okay but about 10 seconds into the song arrows flew faster than the earth spins. (Note: that was a metaphor, of course they weren't faster than the earth spinning) I decided "screw the combo, just button mash". And I actually got a passing score. Not a GOOD score but one the game counted as a win.

Whoa. I watched this ages ago, but now I have gotten into DDR, and I have been playing actively for a year now. It's seriously so fun. I have never seen that many people around a machine, but it might be an actual meetup. I haven't been to one yet, but I have heard rumors about a tournament soon. I live in Queensland Australia, so while the community isn't huge, it's definitely a community, and we are probably growing, thanks to Timezone expanding. There's even a discord server! But at least from my experience, everyone who plays has been really nice. Not just DDR, other rhythm games like MaiMai and Taiko too. I really recommend DDR. I got into it because there are so many good songs, stepping on pads to music is way more fun than you may think, and the Timezone is right near my school and work!

I used to go to the arcade once to play DDR with my lil sis. I was 13, but I was too tall for age and I looked like an 18 year old with sis looking like a 16 year old. So, when it was our turn, as expected from a bunch of kids, we took the easy level and the easiest song. The people there looked at us and started to laugh. They thought we were kids. WELL OF COURSE. MY SIS WAS 11. I WAS 13. WE WERE KIDS. Even though it was easy, we did a few mistakes, but we laugh it off. We went there for fun. Not impressing the crowd. So after we finished, THIS OEDIPUS GUY (I used Oedipus cause he's a motherfucker) JUST WALKS UP TO US AND SAID, "You girls shouldn't be playing this game. Only professionals play it!" My sister felt so angry she wanted to get mad at him but I cut her sentence by saying angrily to him, "Oh really! Then this professional game should just stay in a fancy hotel, and you play this game in tuxedos and this game should've been created at the highest peak off the mountain or at an ancient cave where ALL the secrets should be! ANd kids should'nt play this game! AND IT SHOULDN'T HAVE AN EASY OR MEDIUM LEVEL AT ALL! THE FIRST LEVELS WOULD BE "HARD", "HARDER" AND "THE LEVEL WHERE DOUCHEBAGS PUT THEIR NOSES IN SPACE"! It was hard at first trying to get the hang of it but eventually I kept going and playing the same songs and they started to get more easier. Im a little afraid to do most of the difficult songs cause you have to quick step most of them now which is still pretty hard for someone like me. Still though I go ahead and practice whenever I get the chance.

DDR and ITG...oh my god the nostalgia coming back... I loved it so much (even if I was fat and sweated easy) I still loved to play on difficult songs and do good with my friend. However, unlike Pacific Mall, my mall never had one. So I'd go to Magic Mountain to play, then it shuttle towards ITG and going to Kalahari to play and feed my dance crack. My bud played so much better than me, but I still could play a hard (not expert =3) song and do very well. Alot of people watched us just because they've never really seen ANYONE do it (because there were no Asian hardcores ever when we went). Good times.
