Close 1st is Rocky he was golden retriever/sheep .....lost him little over year ago, from sudden death....always had great vet visits and went to vet few months before he passed and they said he was awesome for 9 heart and hydration great....so got necropsy don't and said sac around heart was full of blood so think had sudden valve issue or tear...broke my heart but I need another buddy....thinking about Doberman again

Airedale Terriers are known for their fearlessness and ferocity. These Airedales exemplify the typical traits of the breed. They are quite stubborn and are not fond of sitting and staying for extended periods, but they will obey when called even after some time has passed. They are highly trainable, but male Airedales tend to assert dominance when meeting new dogs their size or larger. They exhibit a strong inclination to follow you wherever you go and will readily comply with your commands, even venturing into the ocean with large waves. Their loyalty is such that one can imagine them following you into a fire and protecting you with their lives. Coyotes, wolves, and bears should beware when encountering one or more Airedale Terriers, as they will fight to the death and tear them to shreds. Having been around Airedales due to my mother's 25 years of breeding and showing them, I have come to know these dogs well. Once Prince and these two Airedales become acquainted, they would behave like the Three Musketeers, constantly protecting and guarding the territory all day long. It's great to see Airedales. You dont see too many.

Agreed. I've used that leash training technique for many years, and it flat works. My best friend's shelter dog would lean into the pinch collar and tow my friend UP a hill while he was on a bicycle. They asked me to dog-sit once and brought the pinch collar for walks. Told him I don't like those things; he insisted his dog would pull too hard without it. First walk kept the regular nylon collar on him and gave him a jerk when he got the end of the leash, a little harder one the next time. After that, he listened for any change in the way the clasp adjusted from leash/collar ring and would snap his head around and make eye contact with me. He didn't learn a perfect heel, but he never pulled with me after that. I learned to do that after walking another close friend's HUGE male German Shepard (all black). He didn't quite make the cut for being a police dog and my friend adopted him for a family pet. He LOVED his family but was a BEAST on the leash. All three girls hung on and were literally dragged down the dirt road (all of them on their bellies, they couldn't remain on their feet). My friend wasn't big enough to control him either. He'd call me to come walk his dog for him. I could hold him, but the 1 1/2" nylon leash loop would leave an embedded indentation on my wrist when I finished walking him. I was big enough and strong enough to keep him WHERE I wanted him, but there was NO stop of his pulling. After him is when I learned to give them a jerk on the end of the leash. That works. It works WELL. It works QUICKLY.

Love the channel and I've learned a lot. Used to use prong collars and shock collars and I look forward to trying out gentle leader. Ok so here's my situation, we have friends who have a great Pyrenees/lab/gsd mix. When they got it the primary owner was about to be deployed and was worried his wife and kids wouldn't be able to train the dog do he left it with me and my family. While we had him I did basic dog obedience with him and he learned and reacted well. When they took him back I told them he did have some anxiety issues, he would get scared when cars drove by and would bark at other people and pets while walking all mostly corrected by me giving treats and sometimes stopping and putting him in a sit. But I told them to keep it up and look for more anxiety triggers. After a year of owning him they are now looking to get rid of him and wondering if our family, I really liked this dog as a puppy while we had him, would take him. The problem is A they believe in non discipline parenting of their 3 kids, and has allowed the kids to really be rough on the dog to where now he as a mostly adult big dog will preemptively jump on kids. B is not comfortable around other dogs. C (my issue) is a "happy/nervous pee'er. I believe I can stop the jumping and unsocialization but I have no idea how to stop the peeing. We've watched him a couple times since they took him back and he peeied all over our house. Have you ever dealt with something like that or have any idea's? Because of his peeing and lack of obedience they either have him in a crate in their home or outside in their fenced in yard unless on a walk. I would love to give him a better life but if I don't feel, ATM I don't, I can stop the peeing I can't take him into my home. Please help 🙏!

I also have a highly stimulated Standard Schnauzer while on leash 8 1/2 mo. Spayed 2 wks ago.Finally got her to meet a full sized 8 yr in tack male friendly Aussie . Both off leash in country setting. My standard ran around and played chase me but never did the sniff butt (close to head sniff while Aussie laying down). First meeting of another dog. My standard is leash reactive lunging and barking at other dogs. Comment or advice to advance for sniff success?

For dogs with known problem behaviors, I 100% agree corrective training like this is the best. They have to know they can't get away with everything they want. With my dog, who is still young, so I enforce it young, I use a mix of positive reinforcement training and corrective training. Treats for responding to commands promptly and for good behavior that is mark-able (for example, sitting automatically when I stop) and corrections like this gentleman gives for bad behaviors (pulling ahead or jumping up). She's very well socialized, so there's no aggression issues with her. She's literally a waggle-butt around people, though we're working some minor nerves around dogs. It's getting there. I just watched my first episode yesterday. My dog was a rescue and she is antisocial, no interest in other dogs and will just turn around and want to drag me away. I have to tell you, You are amazing!!! You are the first person I have ever seen that uses the same techniques that I do. Then in this episode you state you are in Escondido!?... Wow!!!! I used to live there. So amazing. Anyway Thank you for the tips on socializing her, it will help greatly. I'm an epileptic now and am training her myself to be my service dog. The socializing with other dogs is the last step. I'm so grateful for your advice as training is not as easy as it used to be for me, I don't have the energy anymore. If I were still in San Diego, I would be at your seminar, even though my current dog is not aggressive. Watching the way you read and work with those dogs is truly wonderful.

My male Airedale is very dominant and will make other dogs submit to him but he won't start a fight. With that said if the other dog starts a fight he won't back down so I have to make sure the dog respect each other before letting them play or I have to leave with my dog.

Is it possible to get their attention when they are off leash and 'engaged' with a squirrel? I'm in TN and have 36 acres and a 1/3 mile driveway out in the country. I want my dog to be a dog and not a robot, and enjoy his life, but I need control on him on MY SCHEDULE not his. He does stick around when I'm out on the tractor, but I need to be able to get him to COME when I call him.

Great videos Joel. My lovely border collie isn't reactive, very good with people and other dogs, is a wonderful smart dog with split-second recall. BUT is a demand barker, especially when I am talking to someone else. She only does it outside, she will find a stick or a ball, drop it nearby and then demand bark that we play with her. So much so that it is impossible to talk. I have had her for 3.5 years (her owner died), she is 11.5yo, in very good shape (she thinks she is 2). Her prior owner used a sound producing bark collar but poor old Sophie mentally linked it to playing not barking, so if she has it on she won't move and looks extremely unhappy so I don't use it. I use "no", "stop barking", "enough", in a calm firm voice, and it works, for a minute (she knows and gets it), but in her past life I think they ran her hard in the morning, went to work and ran her hard at supper time, so she equates being outside to play. It has taken me 3.5 years to be out with her, just hangin'. She will do that now, but woe betide I have a conversation. I have looked for videos with ideas to stop demand barking but so far haven't found any. Do you have any ideas?

Hey! I have a 12 wk old English mastiff mix that’s scared when I yell at him. He’s learned “come” pretty well, unless I say it louder than he likes and then it doesn’t matter if I have treats or no treats, or what command, leash or no leash, he will not respond at all. Just sort of “whimpers”, ears back, tail between his legs and hides if he can. Won’t even go potty if I raise my voice, even if it’s not at him. He’s not my first dog, or puppy, but I haven’t had to train any before. Love your videos, keep ‘em coming!

It really works. my guy still has some trouble meeting new dogs, but he is getting better. He doesnt pull as much on the leash. The game changer for me was having my pit to a 2 week board and train. He came back alot less reactive. Im gonna do it again since he still needs a lot of work.

As someone who works in the vet industry. The only correction i have for you is properly using the leash and collar. It should be up against the jaw bones, base of skull. But otherwise 100% The reason being you can cause severe trachea damage

flat collars are not meant for correcting and can do damage. a flat collar cannot loosen when no correction is being given. proper corrective tools like slip leads or martingale collars should be used, in the correct position as you said, for leash corrections

I did see Prince wag his tail a little so I am confused. Also please explain 2:49 "This guy doesn't look that bad" Is that because initially his body was relaxed? because later he got stiff with tail high. Then at 2:56 and 3:00 Tucker (?) did playbows while Prince ran back & forth. The one thing that always blows my mind in the positive community is when I see videos from "trainers" who have been spending months or even longer trying to help their dog be less reactive by giving treats at a dog park with giant vests on that say "NO DOGS" and then celebrate when their dog doesn't lunge once. Its honestly pretty sad to see because a few proper leash pops could fix the problem in a single session. How is it less harmful for your dog to be on edge, anxious/fearful, high heart rate, confused at what they should do, etc. for sometimes their entire lives. It's because the "training" isn't for the dog. its for the person to feel like they aren't wasting their time and get some tiktok views.

Does this typically not work if the dog has harness? I figure the reason the dog reacts is because your yanking on its neck and that might bother the dog. Is there a alternative if you prefer using a harness over a collar?

For the most part, he uses what the owner has on the dog. I have seen him swap out a prong for a flat collar or a harness for a flat collar. Head halter is a generic term; like a halter on a horse, it lets you control the dog’s head. I prefer The Halti, but there are several makers. Make sure which ever one you buy, has a safety strap that snaps to the collar just in case your dog gets out of the halter, you’ll still have control of your dog. Like using a belt with your suspenders, it’s a backup just in case. 😁 Good luck.🍀 Used properly, it is a major game changer for you and your dog.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Pain messes with their brains. He's one of the few trainers that don't use prongs, shock/ecollars and gets reactive dogs meeting sometimes even playing with other dogs. It's really awesome! Lot of countries outlawing those tools too so I believe Joel is ahead of the game. Hope that helps.

I do not think it is aggressive I feel it is him saying I am here come and play, but I find it embarrassing. Off topic, but i discovered something that saved me a lot of nerves riding a bicycle... I used to speed up when i get chased by a dog, but i discovered that once i start braking, they run in fear. I promise it worked so many times for me, at least 20, including multiple dogs at once. I had a backup plan always, to take off my seat and use it as a pickaxe xD I can take the seat in 1 sec and dogs have a concept of weapons, they know you can hurt them with stuff, so its very effective.

I have a 10 month Bull terrier / wheaten, who is highly reactive on leash. Not to every dog but the aggressive dogs and male dog gets him going. He has played with all female dog from young to old with no problem. Played with an older bulldog and showed a slight bit of aggression and the bulldog tried to correct him and after that my dog didn’t want to play with him anymore. Learning dogs body language is rough but ima get it right.

It's rough watching their necks get yanked so hard while you are correcting them. Or, is that part of the point? It needs to be uncomfortable?

they are most definitely not getting yanked hard😂 it may look that way because large/medium dogs need a little more force with that to let them know they’re not the one leading the way, YOU are. we are being gentle as we can with their neck, its just firm tugs,its most effective with a collar not a harness, wherever the head moves the body follows, especially with all those distraction’s in public.

The key is to correct low… bending low to check them and not pulling upwards on their neck. It then doesn’t affect their wind pipe but more so hits the thicker part of their neck. It’s also not that hard. More a ‘pop’ as Joel often says. It is effective very quickly this way so doesn’t take too long till they learn.

Prince needs a promotion to KING. I've seen Pinchers bite viciously. I've even been bitten by one, in my butt cheek, for turning my back at a crucial moment, so my fault, but I wasn't interested in dog training as much as I am now and also the owner who was a friend of mine wasn't a good owner. I had to "re-train" my 90ish year old elderly Grandmother's Shi-tzu to walk with her without pulling her down, not go at other dogs, not eat her or other dogs poop on walks, and not beg constantly at the table among other behavioral issues. Belle had no verbal commands at all, I fixed that. Mommom lived in a row home so not alot of space and Mommom's age didn't help with daily walks. Alot of the bad behavior WAS my Mommom's fault because she acted like the dog wasn't a dog, she acted like Belle was a human, a baby at that. No corrections, not leading during the walks, allowing Belle the whole leash to pull her, feeding from the table as she ate, etc, etc, etc. After a couple months with me there daily Belle could walk with Mommom safely, didn't beg, no poop eating, and was generally well behaved around strange dogs and people but she never really was that bad around people just rambunctious and jumped on everyone's legs. The whole going at other dogs was I feel because of part fear and part protectiveness. Once she realized that I as her human/alpha/leader then later Mommom could take care of her and Mommom herself on the walks she chilled right out. There really are NO BAD DOGS, just BAD OWNERS. Though I do know things are case by case and dog by dog, I probably wouldn't and couldn't do what an actual Trainer does as a job, I just wanted to help my Mommom and Belle live their best lives together. Ps: Mommom "inherited" Belle when her friend and neighbor Mrs Ev, passed away and the relatives that Belle for Mrs Ev wouldn't take her. Plus as Mommom was younger than Mrs Ev at the time, she'd go check on her all the time so Belle bonded with her as well. I did research and used videos like the ones on this channel to augment what I had already experienced from dating a girl who was an animal enthusiast, professional dog groomer/trainer/border and a certified Vet-tech for like 4 years. So I did learn something good from that failed relationship! Lol. She owned a dalmatian that didn't like guys, but at the end Pongo loved me. Also a Bearded Dragon, an Umbrella Cockatoo, and a menagerie of other animals she owned or kept for clients. The most work ever for a relationship and had to be all in or I couldn't come over. The animals and her were a package deal. Hence why I'll never date a woman with kids. LOL. JK. Learned alot about animals though. So that's good I guess. Which then allowed me to help my Mommom. All comes full circle.

I think another example to back-up your way of teaching a dog is the dog passing a streetpole at the wrong side, he might do it twice but the third time he should've learnt something from the inconvenience.

This is an old leash training method. Nice video for sure. You look crazy in the beginning changing directions over and over but dogs are smart and usually figure out what's going on fairly quickly. I used a clicker with my dog. First I spent time giving treats alongside a clicker. But also snap my fingers when negative behaviors are displayed. Then I took away the treats most of the time and the clicker functions as a reward and when i snap my fingers my pets know they ate doing something wrong. I say pets because this also works on cats. I also have trained my cat that when she jumps on certain furniture or tables and I click my fingers and she's down. She can be totally hidden but I click my teeth like the clicker and she comes running with meows. Snap my fingers when scratching anything but a scratching post and she immediately stops.

What you did is probably a very good thing to do to train your dog as a puppy, in a lot of cases people need to correct a behavior in an adult or adolescent dog. If there is an unwanted learned behavior the best thing is correcting instead of adding more training. Correct the wrong and substitute with the new. Also every dog has its own issues and need to be addressed differently as Joel shows in his videos
