It will probably be discussed in the next video, but based on the guidelines I think the Goblin King from the Labyrinth is a good example of a male sorceress. Yes, he wants control over the protagonist, but mostly he wants her to love him. His world is chaos and he prefers it that way. He uses emotion to manipulate her and his charms to make her fall in love with him. He does threaten people and abuse his goblins, but also uses guilt and shame as punishment, not just physical violence. Frequently, his worst threat is the Bog of Eternal Stench, and not that he will kill you. Loved the distinction between the sorcerer and sorceress! Can't wait until the next video!

I like how you bring in modern, non-magical characters as examples. And roasting Christian Grey (who I keep thinking of as a descendant of Dorian Gray) is always fun. 😆 And though I haven't read the books (only watched the movies), I do agree with you on Umbridge. She does come off as more of a sorcerer than sorceress. And Jadis is spot on. Your choice for background music was nice. Added what I thought was the perfect amount of Halloween. Can't wait for the next video!!

Sauron is a cool example, because whether he falls more into the sorcerer./ sorceress category changes over time. In his earliest history he seems to totally fall into the category of sorcerer , with control his being over armies of werewolves and the environment, but he was also a shapeshifter. But when it came to the forging the rings of power he used sorceress tactics, appearing in fair guise as an angel to the elves and convincing them to help him create the rings of power, manipulating their desire to preserve their kingdoms. Then he used the tactics again appearing fair and exploiting the Numenorian's pride to convince them to rebel against heaven, and in doing so destroying themselves. But when the Kingdom was drowned he lost his physical body, and when he regained it he had become so corrupted that he no longer had the ability appear in fair guise, and his inner corruption would always manifest in his outer appearance. So in Lord of the Rings it is this Sauron that we come into contact with. Even when we see attempting diplomacy, eg at the Black Gate or Erebor, it is through emissaries who are revolting in appearance and terrifying and untrustworthy, and they are not seen to be particularly successful. He loses his ability to use sorceress tactics, his power is in brute force. But then the element of using temptation to get people to serve saurons will comes from the Ring, when it tempts eg Galadriel or Sam with power fantasies. So almost Sauron is the sorcerer character and the Ring is the sorceress. Great video :)

Anna Patricia thanks, I like that characterisation, that force was a last resort for Sauron when he couldn’t get what he wanted. For Morgoth it was the first resort. Sauron usually had a long manipulative plan to to get people to do what he wanted

20:22 - AND...I officially like you. You highlighted my opinion on Order vs Chaos almost exactly. For reference, my favorite member of Greek Mythology is Eris, the Goddess of Chaos. Without the chaos to churn air into a body of water, it stagnates, and all life in it dies. Too much, and it will boil. For that reason, I adore Eris.

I love this! I've never considered male sorcererreses and female sorcerers before. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and while Darth Vader definitely embodies a sorcerer I'd say Darth Sidious, the Emperor, embodies one even more so. Darth Vader is somewhere in between (his relationship with chaos/order is very complicated and jumps from various extremes at different points in his life, leading some to make the comparison to borderline personality disorder). When it comes to masculinity = order and femininity = chaos I think there's definitely an argument that can be made for it, but it's my perspective that it's the other way around. Femininity typically embodies stillness, perfection, beauty, peace and quiet. In a traditional heterosexual relationship a housewife keeps the home or hestia, the still centre of life. The masculine reigns over the agora, movement, progress, change. As you said, both chaos and order need to be balanced (although before anyone jumps down my throat, no I'm not some sort of hardcore trad, I'm literally a lesbian who wants to be a housewife. We exist!!!) so that's why the house wife/bread winner set up isn't inherently bad, it only is when men and women are being forced in to those roles. Men and women can be either, typically though, each gender leans more towards the one typically associated with their gender. So I think you and I would agree on a lot with the caveat that to me, femininity is order and masculinity is chaos. This was actually the case in Hinduism before a switch that ascribed order and stillness to Shiva and chaos and movement to Shakti. But I think there's a case that can be made for both perspectives. The idea of the solar feminine and lunar masculine are linked to these ideas too. I'd check out the book The Feminine Universe by Alice Lucy Trent if you're more interested in my perspective. I definitely don't agree with anything she says and she can come off awfully arrogant and dismisses the modern world post-50s as inherently Bad but she has a lot of good ideas.

Very interesting video :3 A great example of a male sorceress is Ardyn Izunia from Final Fantasy XV - he seems to be able to see what the heroes are up to at all times, manipulates events surrounding them to his own whim, plays with the emotions of the hero and his friends, doesn't give a care for what damage he causes to others and ultimately plunges the world into ruin, after which he sits on the throne and waits for 10 years for the heroes to come to him! Also the orange light with the shadows by the end of the video makes you look so wicked!

This touches on why Sauron is, in my opinion, one of the most misunderstood villains. Everyone’s on about how much of a cliché villain he is, and how he’s just evil with no nuance. He is actually far more nuanced than many of the Tolkien copy cats writing fantasy nowadays. If we look at his most successful machinations, they don’t revolve around armies and magical powers. He is actually far more adept at playing the deceiver and the tempter. He understands the minds of the free people, and is able to turn them against eachother. He poured all of his power into the ring, and what is it’s power? It is essentially the single most tempting and irresistible force in Middle Earth, feeding the vanity and envy of those around it. Sauron seems like he is very balanced on the scale. His goals are that of a sorcerer, but his methodology seems more like a sorceress.

Good video. Thought I'd add a bit of information about the norse myths if anyone's interested because I think it's probably relevant. There's an idea in the old myths (debatable point, obviously) that masculine and feminine aspects represented the known and the unknown, which is similar to your point about sorcerer and sorceress. Masculine characters, be it the Gods or Giants or heroes, tended to reflect a physical, conscious desire to learn more wisdom. It's often described as 'burning' in the sense of something forever changing, expanding, seeking. Masculine characters demonstrated the seeking element whereas the feminine demonstrated the hidden knowledge and wisdom. The Goddess Frigga, for example, is suggested by some to know and see all however she never acts or reveals any of it because it's not exactly conscious. She herself in this sense almost embodies the hidden mysteries of life; they are there but ever-elusive. Like you pointed out, I'm not talking about men and women, but how their old myths used symbolism of feminine and masculine to reflect this idea. For example, the Goddess Freyja taught Odin the art of magic which then became part of his endless pursuit to find more wisdom (or power, depending on how you look at it). The two of them together reflect our own endless attempt to find the truth while there is also still further truth beyond us. Odin and 'the masculine' reflects our seeking side whilst Freyja and 'the feminine' reflects the mysterious, deep well of unconscious and unknown. I think this is probably where the archetypes must have originally developed from. The obvious difference is that it was seen positively in the norse myths. I'm imagining Christianity's gradual defeat of paganism warped pagan ideas of magic and all these things into something evil and demonic that we see in classic british literature and then, more modernly, in the archetypes you set out in this video, where it's not about learning wisdom or understanding life, but about power and control. I can't be sure though, it's only seeing your video that made me think it. Too add more weight to what you were saying as well...the norse cultures (although never exclusively) tended to have men as the warrior where women practiced the art of seidr (magic). Magic then being not a demonic tool to manipulate the world but more like a spiritual journey you take to reach the world of the Gods where they then impart something/you connect with them etc. I think this also reflects an idea of masculine physically going out and seeking external understanding, starting with the things they can see and the literal landscape around them...whereas the feminine makes an internal journey into the unknown. As a tangent but interestingly enough, although men were often ridiculed for practicing magic, seen as 'unmanly' etc, it was the very thing the greatest of Gods Odin was most known for. I might be wrong but I think their general idea was that if men did practice magic it wasn't because they were lesser men but that the Gods had given them this different gift, they were then often exempt from battle duties and allowed to follow magic instead...although I'm not sure it's as simple as that. Anyway great video and if you are interested about the horrendous drivel of fifty shades of grey without ever wanting to condemn yourself to actually read it, check out my channel. I'm doing a series of reading through the novel but everytime I laugh at something shit, I take a drink.

With Sauron, and Morgoth before him, the "deal with the devil" thing takes another form as well; Both embew objects and creatures with their own strenth. With Sauron, it's most obviously the ring, and with Morgoth, it was many of the creatures he created, including the werewolves and dragons. They basically bind their power in a way that serves their needs better, but also leaves it vulnerable to be destroyed.

I loved this video. This and the Golem video are two of my favorites. One evil sorcerer I have noticed in relatively recent media is Azusa from Avatar: The Last Airbender. While she does use emotions and manipulates to throw off her opponents and gain power, she demands complete control and uses her considerable power to do so. She is one of, if not the most, skilled benders of her time, and she wouldn’t have been defeated if she had been stable. Her loss of order was ultimately her downfall. I don’t know though. But they prefer different tools to achieve it. A Sorcerer through the Physical, and a Sorceress through the Emotional. The resulting in different outcomes - Order & Chaos. A great film example of a male Sorceress is The Dark Knight's The Joker. Pure Chaos and emotional manipulation. Looking forward to the Sorceress video.

This is an excellent video exploring the archetype of the Evil Sorcerer. Including non magical examples, and even every day examples like abusive partners, was a nice touch. Regarding Darth Vader, he could be considered a classic Sorcerer, but his master The Emperor Palpatine fulfills the criteria much more. (And it's totally ok that you've never seen the films. I would rather someone watch them because they want to than watch them because they feel they should.) Background: The Emperor is the proclaimed ruler of the Galactic Empire which controls most of the galaxy, and Vader is his right-hand man. Not all of the galaxy is under their control, as some areas fall under the Rebel Alliance who oppose the Galactic Empire and some areas on the fringes are either lawless or under the control of crime lords like The Hutts. For all intents and purposes, The Force is alien magic that some people have an affinity for. 1. They can See all/a lot: While neither Vader nor Palpatine is capable of seeing more than normal, they are aware of what is going on throughout the galactic areas they control, as well as has means of military intelligence gathering needed for them to maintain control and fight the Rebels. However, being Force users, they are capable of sensing the Force presence of others, like when Darth Vader senses the presence of his old master Obi Wan Kenobi on the Death Star. Likewise, The Emperor is able to sense Luke's emotional struggle during the final confrontation, and try to use that to his advantage. 2. They are a Puppet Master/trickster: Darth Vader is not so much a puppet master, but he does try to manipulate Luke throughout the Original Trilogy. However, he is not very deceitful, as he uses the truth of his and Luke's relationship to manipulate him. He is also more center stage than behind the scenes, but he does send bounty hunters out to find Luke and Friends for him. Rather, Vader is the puppet of The Emperor, who is shown as a being very manipulative, controlling, and deceitful, which is how he rose to power and gained Vader as a follower in the Prequel Trilogy, and maintained his control throughout the Original Trilogy. And throughout the Original Trilogy, he is very much behind the scenes, letting Vader be seen at the front of the action and only appearing in person in the final film. 3. Arrogant/Superiority Complex: Both Vader and The Emperor fit this quite well. The Emperor thinks everyone is beneath him and that his plans and forces are the best (in Return of the Jedi, Luke straight up tells him "Your overconfidence is your weakness), and Vader takes issue with anyone who questions the validity of The Force. Although as the Original films progress, Vader loses some of his arrogant edge which ultimately helps him find redemption. 4. They've got a silly name: Darth Vader is rather 'silly' (although, I don't think it is any more or less silly that some of the names found in a Galaxy Far Far Away, like Obi Wan Kenobi). It is not his real name, as Obi Wan says it was originally Anakin (in the Prequel Trilogy we see him get his new name when he officially joins The Emperor). The Emperor is a title, and his surname Palpatine is shown to be his original name in the Prequel Trilogy. He does, however, have a 'silly' Sith Lord name of Darth Sidious, but he is not usually referred to by this. At any rate, his calling himself an Emperor certainly has to do with how he views himself and his governmental control, and also calls back to his Superiority Complex. 5. Deal With the Devil: In Star Wars Lore, there are only ever two Sith Lords (Dark Side Force users), the Master and the Apprentice. If you view the Sith Master at any given time as the so called Devil, then the Apprentice makes this deal when they choose to join the Master. In this deal, the Apprentice gives up any moral code they may have had, any connection to their former life (via changing their name), any ties to the Light Side (the Jedi), and basically any form of goodness in their life to follow this path of Darkness. Darth Vader makes this deal when he agrees to the the apprentice of The Emperor. The Emperor must have made this deal when he agreed to be the apprentice of his master (whom he eventually killed). The film 'Revenge of the Sith' is pretty much all the nitty-gritty details of Vader's deal with the devil. 6. Non-human physical form: To quote Obi Wan, Vader is 'more machine now than man, twisted and evil." Vader lost all of his physical limbs, which had to be replaced with robotic ones. His body is badly burned by lava to the point that he requires machinery to keep him alive and help him breathe. As for the Emperor, his face is badly scarred due to his use of Force Lightning. Also, in Star Wars Lore, the more a person goes down the path of the Dark Side, the more deformed their features become, most notably their eyes become heavily rimmed in red and black. 7. Power and Control: The Emperor's ultimate goal was to control the galaxy, so he fulfills this to a T. Darth Vader originally joined The Emperor because he was promised the power to prevent those he loved from dying (as Vader had been plagued with dreams of his wife dying). Vader was then sucked in to The Emperor's goal for galactic domination. All in all, the Star Wars films are chock full of classic archetypes. If you are interested in the films, I would recommend first watching them in order of release; that is, first watch the Original Trilogy (Episodes 4, 5, and 6) followed by the Prequel Trilogy (Episodes 1, 2, and 3).

Hi Galatea! Great Analysis! When you were talking about masculine and feminine energy it made me think of the oriental philosophy of Yin and Yang. It seems that most of your examples come from the western viewpoint of the world which is fine. According to the oriental concept of Yin and Yang Yin the female force is dark and devoid of energy, passive while yang the masculine force is active, hot and cold. In this philosophy an evil person or a sick person is one for whom there is not a balance between the two forces. So it is not that they have yin or yang but that their craving for power causes an imbalance to one energy or the other. Does attempting to apply eastern philosophies alter in any way how your take on Sorcerors and Sorceresses are submitted.

When she was talking about Order being masculine and Chaos being feminine and needing balance between the two, I also thought of Yin and Yang and the need for balance. And when she mentioned Sorcerers having some Sorceress characteristics and vice versa, it reminded me of Yin within Yang and Yang within Yin. It's a good observation, and it's interesting how some concepts are universal even though they might not be defined the same under Eastern or Western philosophies.

One little thing to add about Sauron. He wasnt human yes but he could transform at will into many different forms. He spent a lot of time sowing discord and chaos and influencing people for the worst when he assumed the form of a beautiful and charming elf named Annatar

Sci fi does the characters as well, Babylon 5 has 2 species that work on Order and Chaos and it comes to a climax in a war during one of the seasons where they fight directly against each other by attacking their followers. It was great story writing by JMS the creator of the show, its nice to hear the foundation of the archetypes used by one of my favorite shows.

Hmm, using that logic, then I would say Father from Fullmetal Alchemist is a Sorcerer. -He is able to spy on people and obtain information through his Homunculi. -He gave up his sins in the form of his homunculi, thus making him less human. -He turned the country of Amestris into a military dictatorship in order to more easily control the country for his plans. -His ultimate goal was to have the powers and freedom of a god. And in order to do that, he needed to have the heroes under strict control, which he achieved through multiple means, such as putting loved ones into hostage situations. -What caused his downfall was his lack of understanding towards humans. Their ability to think and turn situations to their advantage, (Such as the hostages using their positions to get out of tight situations and gather information for the resistance.) and their loyalty and love towards each other. Very interesting video. I look forward to watching the one about sorceresses.

I found out my flatmate was the same. He was 25 and the crazy thing was movies were his main interest. I was shocked and couldn't believe it. We eventually got around to watching the original trilogy... He didnt even really care for it. Just saying it was good but it hadnt left an impression on him. I've seen other comments about people watching for the first time as adults and not thinking its amazing too. One reasoning I read was that it was absolutely stunning in 1977 with its cutting edge special effects and being the first blockbuster. And its still amazing for adults who first saw it as a kid because it leaves such a deep impression on young imaginations that stay with people for life. Apparently watching it in 2018 for the first time, as an adult isn't nessaecarily all that great though.

Emperor Palpatine (aka Darth Sidious) in the Star Wars also fits most of the criteria for Evil Sorcerer: He is arrogant, gave up his humanity for power by becoming a sith, is obsessed with control and power, has sith powers like Force Lightning, his connection to the Force gives him ability to foresee things, is cunning, cruel and manipulative, has an quasi-nazistic empire and wants to corrupt Luke in order to replace Darth Vader as his apprentice. However, he eventually got defeated not also because of his arrogance, but also because he ignored a possibility of redemption for Vader, who kills him by chucking him down the Death Star shaft, because Palpatine decided that it would be a good idea to torture Luke to death in front of his father.

The 'seductive sorceress' trope is very valid in my opinion. There are real world examples of woman using sex to attain immense power. In the Ottoman harems for example. There is a hundred year span of history called 'the Sultanate of Women' so called because of the political power held by the women of the harem. Then there is Empress Theodora of Byzantium who was a prostitute, and Empress Wu Zetian was a concubine. These women became some of the most powerful people in history because they new how to use their sexual power. In my opinion art imitates life. The reason sorcerers use direct power is because that is the only way a man obtains power IRL. The reason a sorceress would not is because it's a senseless risk; she has a better means. It is also another concept that crops up a lot in Western mythology that sex can kill you. For example the water spirit in Beowulf and nymphs in Greek myth. It's basically the classical era meta-narrative to tell young lads 'not to stick their dick in crazy'. This is also why you don't see any 'seductive sorcerers', in order for a man to be sexy he has to be powerful anyway so if you have the later and you want to exert your evil influence why take the *hard* route?

At 12:40 I think the best way to simplify it would be the sorceress (and a good handful of female villains in general) operates against the protagonist on an emotional level, while sorcerer operates against them on a physical level.

Great outfit! i love this season and you did it perfectly :D Great topic as well, I really relate to your thoughts on chaos and order (stuff like that should be taught at schools), and think the Sorcerer is propably the best example you could have used for that. And please dont worry to much about offending people with your thoughts. You are honest, but certainly not offensive, and I am sure your main/target audience is aware of that. Also the "down the rabbit hole" idea seems great, i'm sure videos like this could spark a lot of interesting thoughts, and I do love listening to yours. And nice Halloween to you too!
