Younger people don't realize how good this guy was. He beat the world #1 on hardcourt on 10 occasions. I still view Del Potro as the 5th best player of the golden era (some people will mention Wawrinka but he became a factor from 2013 onwards when at least one Big 4 member was slumping each year, the tour was a little less strong than in 2008-2012). Del Potro in 2009 was about as good as Alcaraz right now (and he was 20 too), of course the peak Big 4 era made it too difficult to become #1 but I strongly believe he could have reached the top rankings if it wasn't for his terrible wrist injury at the 2010 Australian Open. JMDP then missed the whole 2010 season and although he came back to a great level, his left wrist never fully recovered (despite of the surgeries) and he could no longer hit his backhand at full power, which meant he was mostly slicing off that wing.
@DaleBoquita12 Жыл бұрын
Agreed 100%. I'd like to add: top 10 in the highest win% in history (400+ wins only), which is nuts considering he had to come back unranked from a heavy injury twice in his career. And I believe he has the most wins against world #1 out of all the players in history to never reach said rank.

Legendary player. A gentle giant with a big heart. He was a warrior, with an incredible fighting spirit. His forehand was Thor's hammer itself. Forever marked in the books of tennis. Happy bday, Delpo!!!

How good was Delpo? He defeated Federer back to back in the final of his hometown tournament in Basel. Used to defeat Nadal and Djokovic in one tournament (2016 Olympics). So happy he got the slam he deserved.

Well, you've forgotten how good healthy Murray was and that his H2H with DelPo is 7:3 overall and also 5:2 between 2008 and 2013 when DelPo had his healthiest and best time. But to be fair. All of those matches were tight. The others yes. DelPo could hang easily around with those.
@pablomza5042 Жыл бұрын
@@fabianhauser708 Well, it is a good answer with precise data, I still think that the players mature their level of play and Delpo had very little time Saludos!
@DaleBoquita12 Жыл бұрын
@@fabianhauser708 Healthy Murray was incredible, but I think that his H2H record against Delpo comes more from the fact that his style "countered" Delpo's. They started playing each other from a young age and, while equally successful, he could never get the hang of Andy's style. Similar to what happened with Nalbandian and Federer: Nalbandian (also Coria) was always ahead of Roger in the junior's circuit and even went on to beat him at their first 5 men's tour matches! But can any sane human being say that he was better than Roger? Not really.
