Old Engine Crane Restored!

I previously found this old Harvey Frost engine crane to help me move the Ranalah frames around the workshop. After sending the hydraulics to Phoenix Contracts to be repaired, will I be able to get the crane working again?!

Fantastic episode. Probably my favourite so far. I love how humble the workers at the hydraulic place were but the immense skill they have. As a teacher I can see the guys who aren’t your usual suspects for the academic subjects but have brilliant minds that need nurturing too.

Inspirational, this has spurred me on to have a go at fixing a rusty machine I bought on EBay a few years ago. It’s a bit of agri history - used for mashing up mangolds for cattle. I want to convert it to a scratter to mash up my apples before pressing ( I’ve made my own press using a car jack). It’s seemed a daunting task and it’s gone to the back of my project queue but Dom’s approach and good humour after setbacks has made me keen to get started. The rusty drum is going to be my main problem!

That was a brilliant episode, great to see that old piece of equipment given a new lease of life. Great to see all those refurbished parts painted green , I think that this was a very environmentally friendly restoration. Why buy new when with a little thought and determination these pieces can be serviceable for years to come. I was wondering wether it would be a good idea to get the “hook” tested just as a safety precaution. Thanks again.

Awesome job as always, but seeing the guys did such a fantastic job on restoring the hydraulic, at some point in the near future you are going to have to give the mechanics of the crane the same make over, I think she would then look amazing once more. It matters not ONE BIT what the rest of the crane looks like! It's a tool for getting a job done! The important bit is refurbished. Dom has plenty to do without wasting his time mucking about painting unnecessary stuff......

I've been in that situation so many times, fighting the tiredness cos the winning line's in sight only to discover it's all gone together back t' front !! It's the not giving up and carrying on till the end regardless that makes it even more rewarding. Such a great effort by everyone !! Lovin' your work Dom. They are just castors - buy new ones The original brand is probably still being sold. The cylinder can be turned about the piston shaft without taking the shaft off the top mount - only the bottom mount needs to be undone.

Awesome, just thinking if you wield a couple of eyelets to trolly legs it would give you a lashing point for moving the Ranalah’s around so they don’t sway to much potentially hitting something.

Hi Dom, I am one of the many ladies that enjoy the Repair Shop, and your videos, I was sad when you sold your old Land Rover, I sold my Series 111 years ago and still regret that. I hope you get one again in the future and I will enjoy the restoration if you do. I loved to see the crane being put back together, I feel sad that on The Repair Shop you transform things back to their new condition, I think it is a shame that you are not going to do this with the crane, I am sure it would look fantastic, all British Racing Green, and in a corner of your workshop. It’s great to see that you are able to lift heavy gear now and move about - something I wanted for my own workshop but could never afford to purchase. Keep up the good work as the videos are thoroughly enjoyable. By the way - good luck with the book. Dom, do a proper job: blast and paint the crane frame and store it in your shop. You’re running a proper company making a proper machine, and you are doing a quality job on the Ranalahs. The machinery you use in the manufacturing process should match the quality of the finished product. Surely you don’t want bits of rust and paint in your lovely new threads and mechanisms? Leaving the crane corroded and unpainted shouts “rush job and shortcut”…! Well, in my view it does. Lots and lots of us have the same respect for your work as the hydraulic guys clearly do. Don’t let us down!

To stop the wheel from swinging while moving around the workshop a noging of wood across the crane legs and lower it on to the wood but most of the weight is still supported by the arm. This makes a great difference to stability, The amount of times I have sean people pulling engine cranes around with the load swinging and the crane as gone over Great video Well done

Chris at Salvage Rebuilds has a nice had operated lathe for turning new bolt / stud threads if you wanted to turn down a bilet of steel to make new bolts !!

Great to see the crane lifting again. .It moves beautifully on the floor. back to front parts, So easily done, pinned and glued a vicrorian banister spindle together to realiise when i was trying to fit it that the square ends were 45 degrees out. Arun fasteners, excellent, ive been looking for a 1"UNF for sone lathe spindle attachments. Looking forward to the book. Was looking at the makers marks on my old file shafts , tool companies of the past are a wonderful rabbit hole.

Dom!! you can't use it without a LOLER inspection. Ask your mates with the forklift. It will need a proof test lift with some weights as well. As you are putting this out there you could get in trouble.

Fantastic recommissioning job on a superb bit of kit. I completely agree with the decision to let it wear its age on the framework. It's only original once, and the scars it shows is all part of that. I dispair when I see once nice things finished 'like new' and all trace of history wiped out when it's not necessary.

Please reconsider leaving the crane in a "ratty" condition. Carry on and give it a coat of British racing green to match up with the amazingly restored hydraulic system. Yet again, what a talented set of people you use. Please honour what they've done by a full and proper refurbishment.
