I sat down for a chat with one of The Repair Shop's original experts, Lucia Scalisi, to learn all about her journey to painting conservation stardom! How do you become a painting conservator? How long did it take her to hone her skills? And the difference between conservation and restoration...

Hello my name is Patricia, I am Stephen's wife. I heard you two talking about different kinds of brushes being used when painting. I have an unusual painting tool that I learned from watching my dad. When doing paint-by-numbers, I know it's a much lower scale than the items you do, but instead of paint brushes we use toothpicks. Thanks, really enjoy the show The Repair Shop

Great video Dom :) On another note, I use to be in the fire service in Greenwich (back in the 90s) we did safety visits to various places including the Greenwich observatory. On this particular day we were also given a tour of the observatory, I didn't realise that there was a conservation department within the royal park. We were led into a room that had a huge table in it, on it was a large flag and a navel jacket the lady showing us around said they were being "conserved" she then pointed to the flag and told us it was the original flag from HMS Victory during the battle of Trafalgar! The flag had holes in it I assume from bullets and looked quite worn, she then walked us to where the jacket was being taken care of and casually told us that it was Lord Nelsons' jacket that he wore during the battle. I was so moved by that revelation, I was just a few feet away from real history, it was so small and you could also see the hole in it where he was shot. The memory of that will stay with me forever, and watching your video rekindled those past times. Lucia you do an amazing job and I have the deepest respect for people like yourself and Dom that keep history alive.

Excellent video, its really enjoyable to hear the back story of all the people down at the Repair Shop. Unfortunately I was distracted during this one, the cause was the mechanism in the background. Is it some kind of horse engine or 'gine if you prefer? I noted the timber beam on the right of the shot connected to one part of the machine, then what looks like a drive shaft crossing behind your interview space to another device on the left of the shot that looks to be a small transfer gear to connect via a universal joint to what ever was to be driven by the 'gine. As I said, it was distracting for me tring to work it out from just the one angle. Keep up all the good work,

Dom it is so good to see somebody trying hard to bring back the old skills that we are losing . A lot of skills are being lost like Lucia was saying that the government do not want to put any money into training and also you have to want to learn and have the passion to learn . We are losing so many skills in the Uk , i spent 6 years as a bricklaying apprentice where it is now 2 years .keep up the good work you are working with some of the most passionate people in the repair shop long may it go on .

Absolutely fascinating chat with Lucia. However, I was equally fascinated by the artifacts in the background. Something behind Lucia that looked like a belt driven pump but the shaft connection to the large cast wheel behind you had me totally puzzled. Any idea what they are?
@BunnyKins1970
@BunnyKins1970 Жыл бұрын
I can't be 100% certain, but 98.43% sure that the two machines are connected via a shaft. The one on the right looks like a horse gin (the horse is strapped to the shaft and walks around in a circle to drive the big gear wheel on the right). That would turn a shaft that leads to the geared bit on the left. On the opposite end of the shaft that has the apparent belt drive is a universal joint. I think that would be attached to drive another piece of machinery, but I don't know what that would be. All of that being said.... it's just speculation on my part with my very limited experience of old farm equipment. I hope Dom reads this and can enlighten both of us. 💚🐇🐴💚
@stevedane787
@stevedane787 Жыл бұрын
@@BunnyKins1970 Now you mention it, I agree with you. I have seen one in use at the Acton Scott historic working farm in Shropshire. However, that was in a paved flat courtyard, not in the location this one is, which is probably what confused me.

I have spent years "Doing as little as possible" 😀. I am in awe ✔ (Brian Jones) of the skills shown in the Repair Shop. I even buy the tools I see being used but never achieve the same results. I am trying to find a revolving tool rack like Brenton's but can't find anything with straight sides and don't have the talent to make one from scratch 😥
@TR4zest

I think you mean *in awe*. Search google images for tool carousel and I think you will find what you are looking for. Great results come with lots and lots of practice. Good luck.
@charlesholder8009
@charlesholder8009 Жыл бұрын
@@TR4zestJones Yes awe! 🤣I will edit that out. Just goes to show you should read what you are sending more than once. Unfortunately, Googling tool carousel throws up a lot of things that are specifically designed for each tool. If you look at what Brenton is using, it is a straight-sided bucket with another, smaller one inside. The tools are just hanging over the edge. Sounds easy but try to find a straight-sided container 10" by 10". I have the turntable with a plastic pot in use but as the sides narrow towards the base, it becomes unstable. 😥

A very enjoyable and fascinating chat with Lucia, of course with Dom and Lucia being mates it comes across as what it essentially is, a chat. Nice plug on the book for Father's Day Dom -- go to be done! I'm afraid to say (with apoligies and respect due to Dan who probably did the edit) but I found the extreme level of jump cuts in the edit to be distracting, it took the edge off a bit. For instance there was a fun moment at the end presented as a sort of outtake, which would have added to the video had it been included. I'd much rather have sat through the chat as it naturally happened, I don't care if it's twice a long or whatever. I can't be the only one who'd feel that way I'm sure. Ian
