Always thought dominoes was a game of pure luck, like uno. Just started playing with strategies and really like it. Sure, there are draws where it is luck & you simply can't win no matter what, but over longer multiple rounds strategy will win out over a player who just always puts down his highest point domino.

I always think what can i score each round and what might my opponent score if I place a specific tile. I study this based on what i have in my hand, what's been played and what tiles are likely in the boneyard

Can someone give me more info on reading the board and anticipating what’s in your opponents hands?
@kittendkat5100
@kittendkat5100 2 жыл бұрын
I usually go by what's in my own hand at the beginning of each round. My rule of thumb is I assume their hand looks opposite of mine (not a 100% guarantee of course but it's something to go by, especially at the beginning of the round when your own hand is your only clue.) If I have say 3 or more 6's in my hand, I'll assume my opponent will be weak in it, having 1 maaaaybe 2 of them, or even none at all. 3 or more of a certain number in your hand is your strength. The opposite also applies - within that same hand I might only have a single 3 (or none at all), and I'll then assume my opponent is packing 3's. Any domino that you only have 1 of, or none , is weakness. I would only play a weak domino right AFTER HE plays it first and not before (if I could help it), to make it harder for him to block the board with it. Try not to lead with a weak domino, that's just giving him something you really can''t afford to give away. OTOH I lead with my strong ones the first chance I get. Having at least 2 strong numbers (like 3 or more each of the 6's and 4's), AND having the double of at least 1 of them (say double 4) AND the connecting 6-4 piece, that's almost guaranteed domino. Having 4 of one of them would be automatic domino...having 4 of each would be automatic domino AND have your opponent pull the whole pack. In summary, analyze your hand at the beginning of each round, keeping a mental note of strengths and weakness, and your hand will basically play itself.

So the board count in your example at 1:59 is 5 + 4 + 0 = 9? Why is this important? And at 2:12, you say, "Determine the difference between tile values on either end of the tiles." So determine the difference between 5 and 3, which is 2. Okay. Why? Then you say, "Connecting the lower end to the open end of the layout will raise the board count." Connecting? Connecting what to what? What does this mean? I have no idea what you are talking about. What is "the lower end?" What is the "open end?" Then you start talking about controlling and manipulating that board count. Sorry, but this was explained way too fast and without enough illustrative detail for me to know what you are talking about.

wrong strategy at playing your heavier tiles early... that is a novice tactic
@joshuaa1605
@joshuaa1605 3 жыл бұрын
It's not wrong or right. It all depends. Sure it's smart to get rid of them early but if I have 4 6s I'm holding them big boys to get some knocks
@trashpanda2825
@trashpanda2825 2 жыл бұрын
It isn't novice to lighten your hand early, just like it isn't a pro move to keep large tiles. It depends on who you're playing, how many big tiles you have, etc. If I'm playing double 9's and I have a bunch of 3's and 4's with only one 8 or 9, it makes sense for me to dump that one large tile because if I try to play it during a lock it gives my opponent an out if they have all large tiles, and suddenly they've blocked me and potentially won. However if I have all larger tiles I'll play a smaller tile first and try to block with my bigger tiles later. Even so, holding big tiles might allow my opponent to get a giant score. It's a game with more than one strategy, but the theme is momentum. There's no one guaranteed way to play and win

I don’t quite understand how do you read the board and your opponents hand in domino’s, can someone please explain this to me?
@wolfson109
@wolfson109 2 жыл бұрын
A simple example: Let's say you're playing a 2 player game and double-6, 6-1, 6-2, and 6-4 are on the board and you have 6-3 in your hand. You can see this and realize that only 6-5 is left over and there's nothing in the boneyard. Therefore, your opponent must have 6-5 in their hand. A slightly more complicated example: double-6, 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4 are on the board, and you have 6-3 in your hand and there are still bones in the yard. Is 6-5 in your opponents hand or the boneyard? Well, let's say that your opponent knocked when there was a 5 open, that is a pretty good sign that they don't have 6-5 and therefore that it is in the boneyard after all. It can get a lot more complicated than this, especially with more than 2 players or with bigger sets like double-9 and double-12. Trick is to try to keep track of which tiles of what suits are on the board and which numbers the other player knocked for. It's kind of like a sudoku puzzle, where you can work out where a particular number goes on the grid just from the locations of other different numbers. To start out, I recommend just trying to keep track of the suit you're most interested in, e.g. if you have a lot of 3s in your hand, try to work out where the other 3s are so you know when is a good time to play them.

0:52 if you’re playing to 100 and your opponent is about to win, don’t necessarily play heavy tiles early. You might want to play them late and try to get high scoring win.

How many % is luck and how many is skill in domino ?
@trashpanda2825
@trashpanda2825 2 жыл бұрын
That depends on who you ask and quite honestly, how good they are. A person who has never played might argue that its 100% luck, while a pro could say 100% luck or 0% luck. Just like many games everyone has a different opinion, but in my experience those who are better at the game usually say that it's more skill than luck. I've had my butt kicked by old men with some of the worst tiles I've seen, all because they knew how to use them to their advantage

Play the stones, for example if you are putting a 3,5 on a 3, but you have also other 3’s, make some calculations, what are the possible stones that can come after the end is placed, like possible other 3 or 4 suit stones. And the other side as well. Count the dominoes in the end, and also count them in the middle of the game to block the opponent, hope for probability, and be 1 step above the gameplay
