On top of what you said, another benefit of directly integrating with Kontakt is that DAW tracks now has lesser system resources footprints. When Kontakt was wrapped within KK, a single track used to take about 2% to 3% of RAM. With projects that use more than 40 tracks, it wasn't practical and the system was running out of RAM fast. With K7 integration now, I still can use the NKS pre-mapped parameters with lesser RAM consumption.

Main reason why I did not get MI, MII, MIII was their standalone usage handicap. So, finally in July 2024 it got MIDI-split zones and became a "real" Masterkeyboard. My Casio VZ-1 from 1988 has 4 split zones and three wheels. 😛

I think what would be even more important than 12 faders are motorized knobs that automatically move to the position as saved in the preset or plugin. If you want to control a plugin (filter), for example, you first have to move the knobs as they are in the plugin, then they would do it automatically with the motor.

That firmware update was huge, right?! I had faith when NI mentioned publicly that the built-in computer on the new S-Series was there for upcoming features, and the onboard MIDI Template functions seems to very much be the start of things. I will need to find time to wrap my head around it, but it's gonna be fun to try out with the MIDI hardware I have. I use Logic Pro and look forward to making Smart Control templates for some sampleware, and I hope to learn more functionality as I get to grips with MIDI. The S88 MK3 is a thing of beauty; glad to have it in the keyboard tray of my studio desk. Thanks for talking about it, sharing your thoughts, showing how you use it. I would dig you continue to share knowledge as you go, maybe a basic tutorial on MIDI Templates, as well as tips and tricks. Thanks for this!

I've currently got 2 of the S61 MK2's, one in my main studio and one in my remote studio (that doubles as an office). I think I'll keep the 61 in the remote location, but it may be time to upgrade to the 88 for the studio since I have room. The Mk3 has a LOT of features I'd really like to take advantage of, so...yeh. Time to drop the hammer. I'd love some faders on it (like the Arturia 88 has), but I've got some 3rd party outboard pads and faders already in place in the studio, so those will do for now (and help keep the price down on the NI 88). I also prefer the direct integration with Komplete/Kontakt.

@@maximumguitarage Hi There! I've owned a lot of controllers and I didn't like the keys on any of them, except for the M-Audio Oxygene 61 I had. It has the best keys I've ever played on a MIDI controller. So I ended up buying an M-Audio Oxygene 61 MK5. With Pitch Bender, Modulation, its 9 faders and 8 knobs, it's more than enough for my needs. The KOMPLETE KONTROL S is a beast, especially considering that most of my products are from NI and Arturia. But, as I said, the lack of Faders in such an expensive product like this, is a deal breaker for me.

@@MichelBarbaro Hey that is slick and I appreciate the information. Glad the M-Audio Oxygene 61 was right for you ! I checked it out it seems like a very solid approach ! Has it all the faders pads - So here is what I cooked up - I have an Akai MPC 61 coming i in as the MPC 3.0 updated streaming 8 layers and workflow seems very promising. I also have the NI MK3 coming in that I have been told by Akai can be plugged in via usb so I can potentially use the NI 88k Akai to control the Akai MPC 61 and have full 88 weighted keys , should make for a comprehensive setup , is the best setup for space saving no - yet grabbed a new out of box unit for $999 through GC for the Akai . I can also have the NI Mk3 for the MAC /studio when I need to make the orchestral or score like pieces I have been pursuing through the DAW. I thought this would cover more ground than just getting two standalone keyboards like the Akai MPC 61 and a Yahama Modx8+/Montage 8xm. I will certainly put M-Audio Oxygene on the radar.

Probably not, but it's certainly the company with enough $$$ to throw at sponsors 😁 I'm a big fan of the Nektar boards myself, the weighted action would just slow me down these days. The after touch is neat though. If you're just starting out I'd grab a Nektar GXP61, a small amazon tablet for a touch display streaming the pc/daw interface, and a cheap fader board (or you can build a fader board yourself for very little $).

Yup Nektar is great, also Casio Privia Pro PX-5S, I wouldn't trust any hardware review by Dom, not because I don't like him, opposite I like him, but because he is connected with Yamaha and NI directly, and I had NI controllers before, they working ok with NI software, but mediocre with DAWs, all that scales, chords etc. wont work in DAW directly only through NI software, and those toys are waaay overpriced.

These are not fully weighted key beds. Dom sort of implied that, but the high level controllers use a hybrid key-bed with a modified hammer action. There are piano-style controllers but they are sold as ‘pianos’.
@MikJames-d1g
@MikJames-d1g 3 ай бұрын
@@artysanmobile Neat, it's rare that even weighted keys are outright too heavy for me (looking at you Roland), it's mainly the "graded action" that leads to inconsistency for me (by design). @@montazownianr1i promise you I would NEVER add such an integral piece in my setup (literally, the keyboard I use every single day) because I have connections with any company. These tools help me make my living and I am extremely picky with my keyboards. The reason I use what I use is because they are the best tools that work for me. And this applies to Yamaha synths as well. I’ve been using them since I started playing the piano 35 years ago. The fact that someone prefers a product doesn’t support the logic not to “trust” them even though it’s your right not to. 😊 I bought my tons of Yamaha (even bought a Yamaha C2 grand 15 years ago!)and NI stuff before any connections

The mk2 can control Kontakt as well. You don't need a mk3 for that. So far the main differences between my Mk2 and Mk3 are the poly-aftertouch - and the MIDI templates in hardware now. I can see the use of the latter, but I've got my Mk2 not even two years ago. So maybe next year. Also, I've got a Stream Deck platec on the left aft of my Mk2 for example. Others put other things on it, I've seen.

I wonder if it would make sense for NI to experiment with making 2 versions of the S88: one for film composers who could benefit from motorized faders and wouldn't mind paying the premium, and another for amateurs like me who would opt for the cheaper keyboard and wouldn't mind all the empty space (it probably wouldn't make sense given that their production costs would probably go up a lot with having to make 2 keyboards instead of just 1) I still love my S88 MkII but watching videos like this, I can't pretend that I don't have gear envy haha

I bought my S61 MK3 late last year and it had a lot of teething troubles integrating with Studio One and KK. However, NI has since fixed these issues. I bought the keyboard in the anticipation of improvements and enhancements, especially with the flexibility of the onboard computer. The unit provides lots of player control - four pedals, touch strip, knobs, aftertouch etc. I think these are the most important factors. The keybed itself is ok, a bit 'squidgy' but handles well. Just don't compare it to a proper weighted piano / MIDI controller (maybe the S88 is different). The display is lovely, but I appreciate to some it might just be a gimmick. Good for selecting NI-integrated instruments, but ultimately you head back to the screen and mouse for finer control. Overall though, I think this keyboard is a good controller, and a sound investment in future enhancements - and NI have proved this with their recent MIDI integration features. Yes, it's expensive, but if you get on with it, then that might be a worthy purchase that will give years of service. Hope this helps anyone considering a purchase!

Bought it a few months ago, and returned it after a few weeks. I felt that the keyboard action was too heavy and sluggish for piano playing (using Pianoteq and trying all adjustments). The polyaftertouch was too sensitive (though this was prior to the firmware update). One of the encoders was "gummed up." I was really hoping this would replace my now-defunct Kurzweil MIDIBoard. Display angle is a GREAT feature. Ultra big bucks DAW controllers were made for years and years by AVID with absolutely no concern for this issue whatsoever. I committed to the Control|24 simply because of the superior ergonomic design. AVID intentionally broke its compatibility in order to clear out the warehouse of their C24 with zero ergonomic design. This tonedeafness resulted in years of resentment among the Control model fans and eventually birthed a whole new company just to make them work again. Imagine building $10,000+ control surfaces without a clue to what their users want and need. I grew up with large-format analog desks which had the very same issues. On the worst of them, I’d stand to make buss assignments, adjust mic pre!! of all things, then sit and depend on muscle memory to adjust either EQ or Aux sends - depending on which the designer didn’t care for. To blithely repeat that mistake in the 21st century was the apogee of thoughtless.

@@DomSigalas maybe the MK4? I mean there is so much empty space to add faders and pads. :/)

@@-musiclee- I know, but like I pointed out on the video, the faders would bring the price up a lot. I would love it but realistically, how many people would spend upwards of $3000 for a controller? If they make it cheap it’s a different price bracket and there are many controllers who offer this functionality. But quality+all these features=$$$$ I have the same wish as you though :) What I do with the empty space is I place my own faders and pads on it.

I like the Novation SL MK3 more. Way more functions, sequenzer, drum pads and the best…no kontrol app needed in the daw. I found it terrible to use softsynth and always have to open it in the NI kontrol app.

@@DomSigalasHi Dom. Sorry I think this was not what I meaned. If you open Synthmaster for example, you have to open not the VST itself, you have to open the NI plugin VST in Cubase and open Synthmaster in this. That is not what I want. You have to take the whole NI ecosystem, but I want to be free. Did you ever used a Novation SL 3?

They could just take the existing MKIII versions and make a version with a set amount of good quality faders for those that really want it. If you are a professional that really use it you would pay the premium price, and pads is not gonna be happening .. people been asking for that for years, and NI want to sell you a Machine instead.

I own all the previous iterations on the S and A series which I absolutely adore, but won't be buying this version. They are advertising this like crazy still nearly a year after release so obviously think a large part of their user base hasn't understood the benefits and guessing sales are dissappointing, Lots to love about the screen, aftertouch and new Kontakt integration. However I want is a great MIDI controller first and foremost, with all the things I need such as quality sliders, plus Maschine integration, this new version fails to deliver. Would give up the premium feel immediately for these other things as whilst everyone likes better quality, the existing ones were very reasononable anyway unless a pro player. Plus another major issue is that we all know that down the line in the future they will shut off support anyway. Then unless you are happy to offload that expensive piece of kit, you're down to some hard choices with regards using older versions of software. So I'm much happier staying in the out and out MIDI controller zone and ignore some of these new ideas. It's a shame as I love their boards but it seems the game is to take you on a new money making journey with these latest products rather than give me what I really want.

Why, not make 2 Versions one without and one with motorized faders… that could solve the “money” problem 😂
@DomSigalas
@DomSigalas 3 ай бұрын
Because this would require double the resources at the factory and additional RND. It’s the number 1 reason why many companies don’t produce “dream” products. For example, many people scream they want the CS80: the amount of people that would be able to buy this synth if Yamaha actually produced it would be so few that the costs of putting it in production line would be catastrophic and a total economic loss. And it’s the same for many products. People say that they would definitely buy it but when they see the price they never do :)

I am glad NI sent you a new toy! 👌 But no, it's not the best controller.... In fact , after i bough Maschine MK3 few years ago, I promise myself to not give more money to Native Instruments. I use Cubase and the MK3 is completely useless. They have never add support for the MK3 to control Kontakt or Komplete Kontrol, so the only way is to use their stupid Daw or use their Daw inside Cubase as VST. A nightmare!! Oh, and good luck on trying to sell MK3, I have mine on Reverb for about an year and nobody buys it.

Hey Pedro! So what’s your favourite controller then for composing? Maschine wasn’t promising to have any deep integration with Cubase, I have it too. I have sold all my old Maschines and a MK49 MKII, but honestly, if the new S88 didn’t come out I wouldn’t want to sell my MKII anyway. I haven’t found anything that matches it.

No its not, cause until DAW software designers really up their game - basically go back to the drawing board in terms of implantation of music techniques and expression like staccato, legato, accents, dynamics, crescendos etc and making all these plugins work much better with DAW software then its all still a pain in the arse for the composer

And another one of those paid influencer advertisement videos about the KK MK3. Not a single word about negatives, like missing Maschine support, worse DAW control compared to MK2, less buttons than MK2 and all those firmware upgrade issues people had. The overall consensus about this product on the internet is mainly negative. But that doesn't stop influencers making ads for it.

The software updates for komplete kontrol discretely forced onto everyone via native access for this new hardware have been a disaster so far. Going from 32bit to 64 bit causing huge amounts of latency (forcing u to up the sample rate to over 512 from a previously happy 128) whilst making amendments for this hardware. Not to mention Maschine integration was binned off. Let’s just hope the new positives out way the old model like better keybed quality the keys get sticky sometimes on the old model (friday units probably) similar bed to arturia keylab 88, these new keys are poly after touch. Kontakt 7 has debug logging turned on by default smashing your disks to pieces. They need to provide customer the option to turn that off.😂
