How many times did you fill up your back pack sprayer on the Bermuda? I'm guessing you're applying it on the grass with a fan spray setting and once you see it covering the untreated grass you just move along as fast as the sprayer is covering, correct? How long does the inhibitor take to show a difference on Bermuda without the fertilizer added? I was starting to see some heat stress a few weeks ago and the previous round of slow release granular was about exhausted after about 6-7 weeks. I had to raise the mower deck up an 1/2" to 3" so I didn't cut the green out of the grass. I cut it every 3-4 days and bag the clippings. i'd like to keep the grass height no more than 2" if possible. The blazing sun sure puts a hurting on the ground surface temps when kept short. So this recent round (3 weeks ago) of slow release granular I applied was a 15-0-15+2(iron) and it was rained in 30 mins after (how lucky) and the next day my lawn company put down a slow release 40-0-0 Urea and was rained in about 3 hours later (lucky again). This took care of the stress look but I didn't want the grass this tall but, had no choice. The Potash helped the base of the grass and the roots dig in deeper. Now, as of this post, we've had some good rain shower events just after I mowed on Tuesday (lucky again) and still have the on and off mild showers supposed to be lasting until Friday, Aug 3, 2018. The Bermuda has really responded to this excellent slow soaking we've been getting. I'm sure you're having the same weather up there in Norcross, GA. I'm wondering if I should just wait until next Spring to try the inhibitor (Podium was my pick unless you suggest another brand) and utilize my normal granular pre emergent and granular fertilizer regime with it. I want to keep the grass thick but not at 3". Organic granular never worked on my hybrid Bermuda sod. The red clay beneath was impervious to it. I get all of my fertilizer from our local co-op really cheap and not that overpriced big box store once a week mowing homeowner stuff like Scotts etc. If I apply the Podium when the grass wakes up really good next Spring and before the first granular fertilizer treatment do you think this is a winning strategy? I read the label on the Podium and suggests it needs to be applied every 4 weeks for best results? I read what you said and the label about no more than 7oz per season on the Bermuda. How much Podium (or your flavor inhibitor) per 2 gallons of water should I use? I read 0.2 - 1oz per gallon on the Podium label. you know better than I on this call. I hope the book I just wrote didn't bore you but, I wanted to make sure you knew what I was doing on my lawn and what was the best course of action using any brand of inhibitor. Thanks so much, Paul.

Hey Wyatt! Great questions you are asking. Pretty sure others have the same thought and we will try to answer all your questions here. For this yard, it takes about 6.5 gallons to treat it. So one full 4 gallon backpack spray, plus another 2.5 gallons of finished solution usually does the trick. Most certainly applying with a fan tip, and yes, moving at a pretty good pace to get the correct coverage, which is kind of an art form! haha. Want to say the results of the plant growth regulator used in this video were pretty instant. In between cuts at least, spaced about 3 days apart. Here is what we recommend you do. slowly start to take the turf down with every mow. Lower the mower with every cut, until you have go the turf down to about an inch, inch and a half. Whatever you prefer. There is going to be some stressing show up from doing this, but Bermuda is pretty tough and bounces back quick. Especially if you water it. Once you have it mowed down to somewhere between an inch, to an inch and a half, let it recover some, then hit it with a growth regulator. The goal is to get one application down before fall, to prolong the color and look. This yard stayed green up to Thanksgiving last year and plant growth regulator wasn't used! That was just from best practices and fertilizing on time!' As for the actual product, Podium is good but T-Nex is cheaper and a higher percentage of the active found in both, and the same amount of concentrate. That is what we used for this video and it worked great! So do the mowing schedule we highlighted here, then hit it with one app of the PGR. Then, when spring rolls around, wait for the turf to completely green up and is out of dormancy, and begin with the PGR apps, spaced out every 4 weeks, on top of fertilizing and regular mowing schedule. If you have a hybrid bermudagrass, mix .20 ounces for every gallon to treat a 1,000 square feet. So that would give you .40 ounces for 2 gallons for 2,000 square feet. Hope all of that helps and gets you pointed in the right direction friend! Please don't hesitate to ask more questions. Feel free to pick up the phone and give us a call if you would like, 866-581-7378. We are always happy to help!

Thanks so much for the reply. I always notice my lawn is waking up and green weeks ahead of all the others in my HOA. I had to mow in March of this year just to even the playing field for the rest that hadn't woke up completely yet. It was looking like "bed head" gone wild. LOL. It was because of the fertilizer regime Southern lawns applies and I supplemented with the 46-0-0 Urea during the year and in the fall. I live below the Fall line so we have an extended season by 2-3 weeks past yours. I used the 46-0-0 fast release in the Spring but, haven't applied it after the April application this year. Southern lawns applies the SR 40-0-0 Urea but, nowhere near as heavy as what I put out. This is where you read I used a 15-0-15+2 (iron) = the 40-0-0 Urea the last week of June The Potash (15+2) was a winner to support the base of the grass blade and green it up instead of just the upper portion of the blade from the Nitrogen. The 40-0-0 salt levels are enough without me adding more insult to injury and possible dehydration from it. The heat and humidity plus the first straight SR Nitrogen apps in late May were about spent by the time the July heat hit. That's where the height adjustment came into play and that next round of 40-0-0 and 15-0-15+2 was applied. It worked wonders but, the 3-4 day interval of mowing continued cutting the top 1/3rd of the blades, weather permitting. I'll go now by watching the lawn through August into early September and possibly scalp it back down to the 1 1/2" level I prefer. When I do apply the GR (if it's this fall) I might add some green grass paint instead of the 2 day wash off marking solution you used. This way the yard doesn't loose the green look or discoloration the GR causes until it greens it up as well. This way, it will remain really green throughout Nov when the last Indian summer hits and then the first colder blast and wind hits in mid November. Remember, you are about 1 1/2 hours N-Northeast from me but, the fall weather sets in up there above the Fall line before we feel it. I'll be looking into the brand you suggested that's stronger strength than Podium. The areas I have to treat measure 2700sqft on the front yard as well as the back. 5400 total is square feet. One more thing, do you stop the GR during the dormant winter (evidently because the grass isn't awake) but, I need to know so I'm not wasting high dollar GR. I'll most likely call you to order the GR and some green grass paint sometime next month. Great information for those who want to know but, don't want to type a novel on here for answers to common warm season grass issues. Thanks so much.

Are there other similar/comparable PGR's that also promote lateral growth, similar to T-Nex, that are less expensive? (I know T-Nex is already a cheaper generic) The smallest size (1 gal) would last me 6 years at the absolute max application rate. If other comparable PGR's aren't available, is there any chance that Quali-Pro would release T-Nex in a smaller size?
@domyown
@domyown 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, there is not another generic out there that we know of that is similar and less expensive than T-Nex. As of right now, we do not know when and if Quali-Pro will be making a smaller size of T-Nex. As soon as we know, we can pass the word along! Great question and thanks for watching and commenting.

Thanks for the quick reply! Is there a specific time range when this is best to apply, specifically for lateral growth of bermuda or other grasses with stolons? Like between the 2nd/3rd mow in the Spring until 4-5 weeks before dormancy? Thanks again for all the helpful videos!

Looks like you put about 2 oz T-Nex in the first sprayer load out. That seems high to me. How much square footage do you get from one load out? (I’ve just started experimenting with it, varying in different areas of the yard from 0.375 to 1.5 oz per 1000 on 1/2” 419 hybrid. Too soon to see results (or damage!).

Great question! Ii sprayed my entire yard, which is about 6,500 square feet. So I mixed up roughly 6.5 gallons of finished solutions. I used the label rate of .75 ounces per 1,000 per 1 gallon of water. So for my first load out, 4 gallons for 4,000 square feet, I put in a total of 3 ounces. .75 ounces x 4 = 3. For the remaining 2,500 square feet, I used about 2.25 ounces. Hope that helps. Shooting the follow up video tomorrow and will hopefully have it up next week.

Castleberry .75oz per k is high. Being in GA you most likely have tifway Bermuda which only supposed to be .38oz per k. I have been running my application on tifway at .30oz and have been getting great growth regulation and it's dark green and thick. But I also mow at 3/4".

A follow-up. My ugly seedstem growth stopped immediately (it's the bane of any well-kept bermuda lawn...can make a fresh cut look bad almost overnight). Green-up within a day. I got no yellowing in the areas I hit at extremely high rates. My need to mow went from every other day (and sometimes that still violated the 1/3 rule) to a need about every 5 or 6 days, incredible. Looks like the lower-rate areas (0.25 oz/1000 sq ft) are about to wake up again after one week, which isn't bad since I'm in central Oklahoma and it's been in the mid- to upper-90s all week. I couldn't be more pleased (and relieved). About to re-apply, and include an area I keep at 1" with a Toro recycler. We'll see if its efficacy drops off.

Paul used T-Nex Plant Growth Regulator in this video www.domyown.com/qualipro-tnex-p-16595.html. However, the application rates for any plant growth regulator will vary depending on the type of turfgrass you have and what you are trying to suppress. Plus, determining how many ounces per one gallon of water to use on your law will depend on sprayer calibration… we made a video on that here… kzbin.info/www/bejne/pX6ki6uhnqp9fKc If you require further assistance, feel free to call us at 866-581-7378.

@koomo801

Only thing I see on the label is it saysto "Use the lower rate of Quali-Pro T-Nex in situations when turf is going dormant due to high or low temperatures, or to lack of moisture." Bermuda is growing in just fine and I am not suffering from a lack or moisture. Should be fine.

Cutting the Bermuda at about an inch and a half.

If it's a hybrid like 419 it really thrives this time of year at much lower heights. I was cutting mine at 1-1/2" to 2" last year and it was thin and sickly. This year I got a Mascot 21" manual reel mower and have had it at 1/2" and neighbors now accuse me of having either 1) astroturf, 2) trying to start a golf course, or 3) replacing my grass over the winter with something completely different. It's so much faster to use a manual reel than a power mower. My total mowing time (every 2 to 3 days before beginning PGR) compares to my previous total time with a Toro mulcher every 5-6 days. Here's a helpful link to Oklahoma State's guide, which is in a weather zone not too much different than yours, I think, where they mention recommended heights. pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-2299/HLA-6420web.pdf

koomo801 I mow my tifway 419 with a Fiskars manual reel at about 1.5" because my lawn isn't quite flat enough to really go lower without scalping. I could get down to 1" with the Fiskars once I top dress with sand. Ultimately, I'd love to invest in a Trucut reel and go down to 5/8"-3/4". I'm having to mow right now every other day because I'm too cheap to apply PGR. lol
@koomo801
@koomo801 6 жыл бұрын
The Fiskar is nice, my neighbor uses one to cut at 1.5", too. I was using the Scotts 20" last year, which is a great reel mower for the money, but although it's designed to cut as low as 1", the mower was too light to get the bentgrass Bermuda that low. It would bounce off the turf and leave undulating cuts. A friend uses it now and he cuts his common bermuda at 2"-3". Look into the reduced water use of grass under PGR. If your water costs are as high as mine (about $6.30/1000 gallons) it pays for itself (T-Nex PGR is running me about $0.32/1000 sq ft/week. When peak summer is past, the PGR application frequency will go way down.)

This is from the label...Turfgrass injury can be minimized by using one of the following options: 1. Mow 4 hours after the application of Quali-Pro T-Nex OR 2. Mow 1 hour before application of Quali-Pro T-Nex. I mowed first thing in the morning, around 9 am, and applied later in the evening, around 3 or 4 pm.
