Although tree suckers are not all that harmful, they are pretty ugly to look at. In this video, Paul will discuss what causes tree suckers and how to get rid of them. He will also do a follow up in the last video, where he treated the turf type tall fescue in the back for buttonweed.

I have this problem buts its happening in my my mulch beds instead of my lawn..I let them grow two seasons and I dug them up and transplanted them along my property line..I had a total of 11 I transplanted about 5 feet apart..I did it last last june and everyone of them survived except one. Fast forward to this year.They're thriving !! All 10 have white blooms on them and its looks great(.they're the "nanchez" species)Cant wait till they get 10-12 ft and the bark turns burgandy.Whats crazy, is in my mulch bed I have about 8 more suckers taking off.Gonna start me a crepe myrtle nursery lol..I eventually gonna use the sucker stopper to stop it.Cause it does make my mulch bed look unsightly.

That's awesome you were able to transplant the suckers and they are thriving. Very cool. Best of luck on the Crrepe Mrytle nursery lol. The sucker stopper works really well. Give it a shot and let us know if you have any questions on it or if we can help in any other way. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I had and still have a problem with root suckers from a tree called an Ailanthus Altissima ( tree from heaven or as I refer to it as the tree from hell). These trees have a ton of root suckers. If one disturbs the soil or for that matter even the tree, these suckers pop up all over the place. There are tons of them along the highways and they love sour soil and air pollution. Extremely invasive. I found that the only way to get rid of them is to use poison ivy killer. Even though this tree is not poisonous it is part of the sumac family. These trees, if uncontrolled, will take over ones property.

Work for the Yard Barber down by the coast and I can't stand them they also grow under bushes and shaded areas and please use hand snips with a sharp blade to get them off the trunk of the tree and make sure it's a nice clean cut so no bugs will get in the tree and kill it

Ive tried doing this for years with my Kentucky coffee tree. Its actually a bush, but grown as a tree. Ive had no success with this. Try as I may, they kept coming back. So I finally took another approach. Wrapped landscaped cloth around the trunk area where they normally sprout and then mulched heavily. I dont know if this is a cure, but was worth a try anyway. If it fails, I will just go back to weed wacking them again.

I have an 18 year old plum tree that has been producing crazy amounts of fruit every year with the exception of 1 year. This year looks like I won’t have any. I have a ton of suckers so I guess that might be a reason. If I pull those suckers out, could I use them to grow another tree? Maybe put them in some water with the hope it sprouts roots?
@domyown
@domyown Жыл бұрын
With a pruning shears, cut each sucker sprout back to its point of origin at the trunk or the soil near the trunk. Prune each sprout as flush as possible, so little stubs don't remain, as they can more easily resprout. Sucker sprouts can be removed whenever they appear, which is easier when they're tiny. To get the new tree roots sprouting again, begin by moving them into water. Take a container, fill it up with a few inches of water, and place the roots inside. When you begin to see tree roots sprouting well, you can now move the cuttings to the soil. If you need further assistance treating your plum tree, we recommend reaching out to your local extension office. You can find your Master Gardener at this link : npic.orst.edu/mgamlr.html

My plum tree's suckers are sucking the USE out of the planter area that surrounds it. They are full bore growing this spring. Not sure how to aggressively approach this problem without killing the mother tree growth. I can not pull out the sucker growth AT ALL. Its too thick and goes too far down.

great. but what is the purpose of the NAA "sauce" that is sprayed ? it seems that is is sprayed in only a very small area of the sucker root. what is to prevent a new sucker from forming three or four inches further along the root system?

Unfortunately, there is no perfect method for keeping the suckers gone or from coming back. The method shown is the most common control method at this time.

Interesting, do you know which species? Previous homeowners planted two species of plum tree. Though both trees seem to be healthy, the side yard nearby is loaded with what I assume are either suckers or saplings. Wound up here trying to figure it out.

Great video. Thank you. I have a question. I have trees that I planted about 3-4 years ago. They are planted in my yard and the lawn grew up too close to them. I have many surface roots around each tree and exposed those roots when pulling the grass out in a circle around each tree. Even though I was careful, I did slight damage to the surface roots when removing the grass. Now I have sucker trees growing from the roots. Lots of them. Can I use the product you are recommending? Keeping the area around my trees grass and weed free is way more difficult that I had anticipated. I had mulch in the circles last year but the grass grew right into the mulch and, again, took over. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Does it get into the root system and kill other ones nearby that haven't surfaced yet or just cut them off where you spray it? Someone sent me a bottle of Sucker Punch to use on an out of control Aspen problem in the backyard of a house I bought.
@domyown
@domyown 4 жыл бұрын
Sucker Punch will only affect the sprouting suckers themselves and would need to be applied directly to them. It would not travel trough the roots so you would need to spray all the ones you need to be affected. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

How did you take care of the sucker by the trunk of the tree?
@domyown
@domyown 5 жыл бұрын
To treat those, you can carefully prune (with clean tools!) and then treat that spot with Sucker Stopper: www.domyown.com/monterey-sucker-stopper-rtu-p-1588.html Paul talks about pruning in this video, and he goes back to reference updates on it in later videos, too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6ecp2urprd7oKc

How do u keep the suckers from growing at the bottom? I saw u had some but mine grow like crazy
@domyown
@domyown 6 жыл бұрын
The suckers are very tender and easy to snap off. You want to prune them off as close to the trunk or base as possible. Make sure to get a clean cut without damaging the trunk or base of the tree and shrub. If you damage the trunk or base, a new sucker might sprout from that spot. Once you properly prune them off, lightly spray the Sucker Stopper RTU on it, and your troubles are over! Here is the link to the product we used for this video... goo.gl/duj1UE Hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions or we can help in any way! Thanks for watching and commenting.

I have suckers popping up everywhere in my back yard ever since the neighbors cut down their tree. Must be they still have the stump? I've not peeked over the retaining wall to see what's going on over there but I literally cannot keep up with the suckers. I'm guessing I'll need to go root digging and treat them individually? So frustrating.
@domyown
@domyown 4 жыл бұрын
Here are few steps you can take to help discourage suckers: 1.Grasp one of the suckers down low, near the ground. pull hard, with a twisting motion, pulling up and away from the base at the same time. 2.Clip individual suckers off at or below ground level with pruning shears if you can’t remove the suckers by pulling. 3.Mow areas with large numbers of suckers, cutting them off as close to the ground as possible. 4.Dig down to the roots in any spots that seem to have a large concentration of suckers popping up, if you can get to them.Check the roots to see if most of the suckers come from a single section. If so, cut that part of the root off of the tree, pull it up and get rid of it. 5. Cover any shallow roots with a layer of mulch about 2 inches thick, enough to discourage the suckers without doing any harm to your tree. If the mulch settles or washes away over time, replace it with a new layer. You can also contact your Local Cooperative Extension Office and speak with the Master Gardener in your area.
