Either he's right and you're wrong or vice versa. You can't have it both ways. And as for there being no hope... that's not true. There IS hope as it's pretty simple: "If you love me, keep my commandments" John 14:15. There's hope for those that strive to keep God's Commandments and frequent confession.

We still have to make reparation for our sins. Just because our eternal punishment is taken away by confession doesn't mean we've made up for our temporal punishment. Hence the need for sacrifices and more prayer, etc.
