Something infectious about Don Cherry's energy and spirit.

Don Cherry is seriously underrated. Masters degree in Jazz Trumpet and nobody ever talked about his playing, let alone his ability to be the front-man. I remember an old bit of wisdom I got from a teacher - he said to me "You can be a musician and you'll eat. You can be an entertainer and you'll eat. Or you could be both and you'll feast!" This was a feast indeed. Thanks for sharing!

I played tenor sax, but doubled on pocket trumpet. It was always a surprise to people when I dragged that out of my coat pocket during a gig. Unfortunately, dentures eventually put paid to this little game.

Is that little trumpet more difficult 2 play than a standard sized trumpet?
@xander95647 ай бұрын
I hear they can be because of the tighter wrap -- same length of tubing as a regular trumpet but wrapped close. Some find them a little uncomfortable to hold, too. What I also heard is you have to adapt to it, play it and hold it like a pocket trumpet, not a regular trumpet and then it's fine. Also, get a really good brand -- because there are many cheap ones that aren't easy to play. Apparently, the Carol Brass pocket trumpet is an exception -- good quality but inexpensive. To be precise, though, what Don Cherry plays is a pocket cornet.

How did he get a sound like that out of a pocket trumpet? That shouldn't be possible, horns like that are usually crap! Seriously, no joke. He had to had that custom made AND be one hell of a player.
@xander95647 ай бұрын
You have to get a good one. Just before watching this video, I saw one of a guy demoing his Bach Stradivarius trumpet and his Carol Brass pocket trumpet, and they sounded pretty close.
