Baseball has now lost a lot of this tradition too, and Don is right that there's good reason for the old traditions. Now you have a bunch of prima donna guys in baseball that don't even run to first when they hit the ball hard, and they end up looking like idiots and hurt their team if it doesn't quite clear the wall. Little league players would be trashed for that in the old days, now the pros do it. Crazy how some things have changed. The players of today mostly could not stand with the players of the past in most of the team sports, because their heart is not in the game in the same way. In Basketball few players ever even try to block dunks anymore because they don't want to be on the bad end of a poster, a business decision they call it. It's business now mostly, ego, and spoiled high skilled players that don't have nearly the same kind of grit, will and passion to win in all the team sports. So many of the young players today are just out to make themselves some money more than anything. Their own stardom, the star players are a brand themselves now is how they think, team is secondary, and fans, just a means to make some money. Even look at Lebron, not even close to the kind of loyal and dedicated team player that Jordan was. Team sports are not nearly what they once were.

I've got an idea why it happened that hockey changed its tradition for rookies. Some organization pushes hockey on the American people (American as opposed to Canadian). This organization originally tried to push soccer on the American people, during the eighties beginning in 1978. They failed. Then they tried to find out why the failed and tested their ability to push something on the American people. They chose hockey for the test and succeeded. While they push hockey on the American people, they force hockey to change in favor of US taste and in favor to accomodate US players.

Bench press doesn't equal athleticism. Trust me. Thats one very small element if it. If you were going to take something liked that and use it as a marker for athleticism then I bet an average hockey player can run,do crunches, leg press etc more than the average baseball player. Just saying theres a hell of alot more to it. Btw I doubt must nhl players can't lift 150 on bench more than ten times.
