He randomly came into my gym after a playoff game a couple years ago, and walked up to me and talked to me, told me I was in incredibly shape, gave me a photo without asking, talked about my sick mom, and the next day he brought in a signed photo with a message to my mom (without me asking for it). This guy was THE nicest, classiest celeb I've ever met (and I've met Keanu Reeves in my gym).

@joeschmo26937 жыл бұрын
Frogman61789 There was no actual goalie interference. He didn't gain any advantage by the placement of his foot. That off-side at the crease rule was retarded, there was no interference, the goal counted, and Hullie got his name on the cup.

Standing ovation for Don Cherry. What a great speech about the decline of the NHL from Don Cherry!
@christiantaillon29303 жыл бұрын
After the 2004 Finals, the NHL has declined massively. Hockey is not the same.
@RoscoMontana213 жыл бұрын
@@christiantaillon2930 How has it declined? I’m genuinely curious as to what your explanation is. Is it because most of the talentless head hunters have been taken out of the league? I love a good hockey fight as much as the next guy, but I enjoy seeing skilled players with amazing talent skating around opposed to a tie domi type who is only there to protect people. Don Cherry is old for a reason.
@christiantaillon29303 жыл бұрын
@@RoscoMontana21 I don't know it just seems different now. It seems like to me back then the sticks were made differently and sounded differently too. And the way the puck was moved around back then was different too. You don't see alot of the puck being shor around the boards anymore like 2004 or older. That's just what I've seen
@RoscoMontana213 жыл бұрын
@@christiantaillon2930 I see what you mean, but I think it’s just the inevitable evolution of the game. More players now are expected to have skill over toughness, I think because of injuries and the rise of concussions over the last 20 years has not only affected the rules of the league, but also the mindset of the players. Less guys are compelled to be physical when they can make a better career out of learning to shoot and pass better. Gretzky changed the game and inspired thousands of players to become more in tune with their finesse and statistic contribution opposed to 70s-90s hockey where games were heavily influenced by physicality.

Fighting actually has a purpose in hockey. Its not like they fight for fighting's sake. Hull straight up admitted that cupcakes like him were able to score goals because of enforcers on their teams. You have your skill players who are usually not the toughest guys on the ice and you have enforcers who will beat the shit out of you if you take a run at their skill player. It would be no holds bared on someone like Crosby without others protecting him. He would get injured every season. Its part of the game and yes, Americans love to see fights. Its also a way to put some spunk back in your team when they need a lift. You send out your bruiser to wreak havok. Its fucking awesome, God I love hockey. On a side note I hate how the NHL tries to lift popularity of the sport in the States. I believe they should try of course but the manner in which they try is bullshit like talk of getting rid of fights. Hockey will never be as big as football or baseball except for in select cities like Buffalo, St. Paul, Detroit, ect. Hockey will always take a back seat in cities like Dallas, L.A, Miami, and pretty much anywhere south of the mason dixon. Yet for cities like Buffalo and St. Paul the prospect of their teams getting moved to larger markets is always looming and they move them to places like Atlanta where no one has ever even seen ice in their sun soaked lives. I'm from Western NY where we live and breathe hockey, not just Sabres hockey. I have been to Sabres games that were nearly full when the team was completely out of contention. It may be a small market but the fans are there and aren't going anywhere. Canada has lost how many fucking teams? And where do those teams get moved? To some bullshit city that never heard of hockey. The NHL needs to build on its strengths. Its a Northern game with Northern fans. Quit shoving it down the throats of cities who don't give a shit while you take it away from cities who love it above all other sports.
@RunDub5 жыл бұрын
The old enforcers often policed the game better than the refs. Cherry was spot on when he said there was no Gretzky rule, you just knew that if you touched Wayne, you had to deal with Dave Semenko. Bring back old time hockey!

Brett Hull is not an asshole. For all the goals and excellent commentary he has provided, that is farthest from the truth. I met him when he was younger, Bobby taught his kids pretty darn good, they were always polite and outspoken, just like Dad, but always spoke what they believed to be the truth, like Don Cherry, and, of course, they are most often right!...I think that is sooooo funny...bring Brett back to TV more!!! :-) (and Bobby Hull, while you're at it!)

The shoulder and elbow pads argument makes sense. But Hull's idea of making everyone not wear shields or visors is dumb. It should still be a player's choice but unfortunately, visors are grandfathered in and everyone will be wearing one within the next decade

Fighting helps the players police themselves. Someone is less likely to make a dirty play that could really hurt someone when you have a bigger guy ready to punch your head off. Alot of respect in the fights too. Most say good fight to eachother afterwords. Laraque (spelling) was a good example of this. Would just ask, "hey, wanna go? Good fight brother!"

The 'own' comes at the end, for those of you not wanting to see 6 minutes of commentary. Hull complains Alfredsson shouldn't have scored because the puck deflected off his foot. Cherry countered with the infamous 'foot in the crease' that Hull scored to win the cup in '99. Brett was left speechless
@zparise123 when cherry brought up the foot in the crease at the end(talking about Hull's illegal goal in the cup finals against the sabres). It was a shot at Hull

The biggest thing that's killed physicality is analytics. The numbers'll tell ya that there's no need for a big hitter if penalties are actually getting called. It'd be nice if the league changed a few rules so stuff like big, clean hits were allowed again. Maybe let strong wingers push guys off the puck carrier sorta like a reverse of the old clutch and grab.
