Pavel Bure was the most exciting player who has ever put on a Canuck's uniform. I believe he had 3 fifty goal seasons and came close to winning the Cup in 1994. That Cup run would not be possible without some brilliant goals during the playoffs. Every night he gave 100% to the point where he injured his knees badly that affected the rest of his career. And yet there is a large segment of fans in Vancouver who blame Bure for deserting the Canucks and demanding a trade. They are dead wrong.

Comments in here make it sound like Cherry did this all the time. You really think Don just decided to make this up out of the blue? He obviously had a source and I don’t doubt that there’s at least an element of truth behind it. And the point of him saying that he always praised Vancouver, is to show that it’s not like he was always pissing on the organization or it’s players and for him to drop this bomb means he trusted the source it came from.

This was about as stupid as Cherry calling Stu Grimson "a gutless puke."

Bure is all about the money?? Pavel payed money out of his own pocket so that he could play in the NHL. The Russians were insisting on 50k from the canucks as a transfer fee, and they wouldn’t pay. Bure says I will pay the 50k if it means I can play now. So he did. Once he got here, he showed nothing but crazy enthusiasm for playing in the NHL every game. He was ferocious in the 94 playoffs and was one game away from his childhood dream. Anyone who says THAT guy was all about the money and would sit out Game 7 for the cup for more money is completely full of shit. I don’t know where the rumour started and I know Cherry doesn’t have the imagination or cynical motives to make up that story. Somebody started it and Cherry bought it - because Russians bad, I guess. Maybe management had been floating the claim as a back up plan if Bure couldn’t be signed, or if he had to be traded due to finances. The city would have lost its mind if Bure was traded. Only Bure’s agent and management really know what happened with negotiations. But there is no way in hell Bure would betray his teammates and put an ugly stain on his career as a negotiating tactic. I have never heard a Canuck player hint that this was true in all the years since. It says a lot about Don that he bought it and would repeat a rumour like that on the air. The man never did have a filter.

@leafyutube Agreed; at least with Quinn, no matter how much the Toronto media disliked him half the time & wished for Quinn to get the boot, the Leafs were a contender throughout his coaching tenure. I was skeptical of Quinn myself sometimes, but he did a great job coaching in Toronto.

Don Cherry didn't like Pavel because he was an old fashioned, western conservative and a complete mark for the Cold War. Pat Quinn was just an idiot. This is the same guy that, let's not forget, thought Cliff Running, a then consistent 60+ point centre in his prime, wasn't work $1 million. He also pissed off Wayne Freaking Gretzky, who wanted to come to Vancouver until Pat gave him an ultimatum (?!) and decided Mark Messier in his late 30s, after 6 Cup rings, was still worth $24 million over 3 seasons - 2 years after he said no to $1 million for Cliff, who was 30 years old. Before we praise Pat Quinn too much, let's not forget the guy wasn't exactly pristine as a GM or coach. He hd one cinderella playoff run in 1994 when they were already on the way down and arguably 1991-92 was the Canucks best season in the 90s. They just couldn't get it done in the playoffs. Losing Larionov was brutal. Say what you want about Murray Craven, he wasn't Igor. I look on 1994 fondly too, because I think with some far officiating, we might have won, but there were some big mistakes that led to some really dark times. Quinn was borderline awful at the draft table if you take out Bure, Linden, Aucoin and Ohlund. They never did get that perfect set up man for Pavel and when they brought in a top pairing D...well, we know what happened there, don't we?
