That looks great! An Old Fashioned is the best cocktail in the world, when done properly. I always thought Don went a bit easy with the Rye in his version though. He was making 2 cocktails and didn't seem to put much in. But it's television, and like you say they probably shot it several times.

I've found that I like the bourbon version more but if I use Rye I'll add in a touch more simple syrup. Thanks for watching!

This is MY Old Fashioned! I love this recipe and yes, I agree that the cherry is absolutely mandatory.

A good cherry. Not that neon red thing he put in there. Luxardo is king but too expensive.

I do 1 tsp-ish of sugar, 4-5 dashes of Ango, a teaspoon of water, mix, add a giant ice cube, 2oz of whiskey, stir and garnish with an orange peel and maybe a cherry if I feel like it. Muddling the fruit was the thing back in the 50's-60's, IIRC.

4-5 dashes! Wow, I don't think I need that much but hey, that's what's fun about making it your own and trying different recipes. Thanks for watching!

@ScalpersSpeakeasy I drink Moxie which is made from the same stuff as Angostura bitters. It's a love it or hate it kind of drink.

@@HALO-2304 Not sure what that is, sounds kind of like Campari which was more bitter than I expected. Thanks for watching!

@ScalpersSpeakeasy Moxie is a soda that's very popular here in Maine. Not sure of it's availability in the rest of the country. It's similar to root beer, but it has a bitter aftertaste, many describe as cough syrup or motor oil. If you put a few dashes of Angostura bitters in a glass with a touch of water, you'll get the flavor. Campari is definitely way more bitter. I tried a Negroni, but the Campari was overpowering. If I were to make one, I'd try dialing it back a little.

Sometimes instead of an orange peel I use orange bitters or a splash of Grand Marnier

Absolutely! I do the same. Thanks for watching!

Sugar cube, bitters, ice, rye or bourbon. Rye is better. Maybe a touch of water to breakdown the sugar. If you're lazy, simple syrup. Everything else is fluff. If you must use a cherry, use a good one. Not that ice cream sunday neon red thing. Go near my drink with and orange and we are gonna fight.

It's a lot of fun to play around with Old Fashioneds. I really like the orange though! I even use orange bitters sometimes. Thanks for watching!
