Oaxaca is magical! My family and I visited a few years back, fell in love and have gone back every year, with some years going more than once. There are countless of guides, but I'd be more than happy to send over our recommendations of neighborhoods, markets, mezcalerías, food, etc.

The Oaxaca old fashioned is a long-time favorite of mine. When I make them, I do opt for chocolate bitters (easiest one for me to find is Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate Bitters, it's basically like a mole bitters), but for the garnish, I dust one side of an orange slice with a little bit of cinnamon, which I think plays really well with the mezcal.

I made a traditional Old Fashioned last night but with Espanita Anejo (hands down, favorite tequila) instead of whiskey and even though I didn't have the suggested Mole Bitters, it was pretty fantastic. This looks good too. Wouldn't have thought of grapefruit but I dig it.

I've made your previous rendition of this drink with the flamed orange round, oh, a gazillion times, maybe. But, I've also made it with grapefruit and, I agree, it is equally good. I have added one additional component and that is a rich agave syrup made with hibiscus for a little more Mexico in the drink. It adds a bit more red color and mellow hibiscus depth. Thanks Anders and Oz.

It's a great drink. I tend to go 50/50 with ango and mole bitters, and I've also been known to sneak an extra half ounce of overproof blanco in to amp things up (G4 108 works really well) I'd never considered the grapefruit, it seems like an obvious pairing when you think about it though.

If you thin your Agave down (80% Agave, 20% water) to make it less vicious, use .25 oz. I will sometimes use a dash of Ango and Peychaud’s as well. Most people who order this cocktail have grown into the Mexcal flavor, and are cool with full pour, but this is a great way to tame it for the uninitiated. I have a “Qaxacan Express Martini” (Mexcal Espresso Martini ) that might benefit from a tone down with Tequila? It’s based on Mole flavors and the really smoky Mexcal had taken over the recipe. I had switched from Vida to Illegal for the same reason, and to let the other components come through. Tempering it with Tequila might be a better solution?

I had a drink a couple of years ago called the “charro negro”. But, instead of tequila they used a jalapeño infused mezcal (I think) because it was ultra savory and spicy. I’ve been chasing that taste for a while, but would love a video on that drink. So delicious even the “normal” way.

@@mikeparler 1:1 tequila and mezcal, 1:2 coconut milk, 1:4 lime. You can garnish with jalapeño, or, as I prefer, you can muddle the jalapeño into the liquor. I love Mezcal!!!!! Bet you use it for a bunch of different cocktails. While I was in Columbia, went to a Mexican restaurant that had a Smokey Negroni……. Basically a Negroni with Mezcal instead of Gin, if I remember correctly……. It was really good. However, I’ve noticed that Mezcal is kind of like Yankees baseball. People that I know seem to either like it strongly or dislike it strongly. My Father-in-Law thought it smelled like jet fuel and my wife’s not a fan of it either. I really enjoy mezcal myself. Keep those recipes coming!!!!!!!
@hudsonfan8 ай бұрын
I actually discovered it at a restaurant here in Atlanta that put it in a cocktail called “Pineapple Express”
@kellenholt66559 ай бұрын
Just re-upped on mezcal specifically with this drink in mind, so this video couldn't have come at a better time! 😄 I will say that just like a regular old fashioned, this template is very riff-able. I am a fan of mole bitters (Bittermans makes a good one) in this drink, and I've also swapped the agave nectar for cinnamon syrup, which I find plays nice with the mezcal. If you like spice, hellfire bitters are good in this one, although a little goes a long way. Definitely recommend experimenting! Most of all, this drink checks all the boxes for me for a "complex" cocktail, especially when you use a quality tequila and mezcal. The combo of a good reposado and the aged notes it brings along with the slight smoke of the mezcal and the spice components from the bitters together really do it for me. It is sometimes tricky to get the balance right on this one, but when you do, it really sings.
Dude! As soon as you as you intro’d this, I’m like; “I have all the ingredients!” You certainly had me when you mentioned the taste affinity of Mezcal as something akin to scotch and Jamaican rum (to which I have a couple hundo bottles of rum) This might be a new favorite, real smooth, the agave really Smooths it out. The mouth feel coats your tongue. Yummy
@fisch7238 ай бұрын
I first heard of and enjoyed this drink in Philly like 10(?) years ago. Best drink I ever had. The following week I was in a comedy club in NYC and asked if they could make a mezcal old fashioned. Waitress said she would ask. She comes back a few mins later with the drink and says, "Oh my god, everyone in the back says you're a genius." I took the credit.
