"We take pride in being able to play the shit out."

*Thank you!* Ten years have flown by, forty-five since Don's passing, more than he was granted to live. Through these captivating, masterful arrangements (which have nothing "tributy" about them) and Thomas Gansch's versatile trumpet his music lives again. A stellar performance by all involved, even the introduction was professional and heartfelt. Kudos to Frau Sampson!

Thomas Gansch is simply the best! I love how he plays cause it's amazing how he make that GanschHorn sound in every register and in every show... For me, the best trumpet player actually and possible one of the bests of all times to my ears!

Wonderful show! So happy Don's music is being played. The band is great and they do the charts justice (although I think Indian Lady could have been a touch faster). I wish there was an Ellis tribute band here in the US. I first heard Don's music in a music appreciation class in high school, 1971ish. I still remember being blown away by Indian Lady & Turkish Bath. Haven't been the same since and still occasionally go on long Don Ellis binges (in the midst of one right now). Many thanks to Mr Gansch & the band!

The first time I heard Don Ellis I was ~15 (1970 ish), it was a Saturday eve and I lived in Ft Lauderdale Fl. There was a good jazz radio station out of Miami and I turned it on. What I heard was close to the beginning of Var for Trumpet and I have not been the same since. Hat's off to Mssr Gansch and the musicians of this ensemble! Well done. Mssr G did an admirable job of paying homage to Don E, yet not without yielding his extremely brilliant 'voice' while doing do. Just brilliant! And all the other charts as well. Imagine performing a piece in 33/16, much less improvising. Well Done, all! Thanks and I would pay for more!

Remarkable. Don was my dads favorite musician. My dad was a trombone player. Electric Bath was on his TT quite often. Much to my mothers dismay. I saw Don twice. Once at Alice Tully Hall NYC. My first ever concert!

When Don Ellis played at the college I attended, he had in his concert rider that the piano had to be tuned with A = 441 instead of the usual 440. The piano tuner thought they were crazy, but he reset the piano.

Greate attempt at capturing the soul of Turkish Bath :D! Though the comp could have hade a bit heavier groove, but I was dissapointed over Indian Lady. Maybe I am unfair, but here goes my argument to why... First: There was very litle energy, in a song that should blow you off the chair. Second: It should be much more dirty than this. Though I would give kudos to the trombonist, for actualy having the indian lady in his solo :) Third: It is supose to be a indojazz groove, and not a moderate tempo, quite mellow, bebop groove. Great musicians otherwise. I do not know if the recording may have something to do with this, if you could put the blaim on the band leader for conducting it like a sissy or rehersing the song like it was later played. Oh, and all respect to the guy in the beautiful orange suit. Progressive music should be played with style; progressive style! ^.-!

Glad I read music because I don't speak German, but I used to play trumpet. I still don't understand why solo jazz trumpet players play so many notes. Showing off I suppose. But if you can do it why not. I just discovered Thomas this year. I'm an old Texan.
