Don Juan is a long narrative poem by Byron, based very loosely on the legend of the evil seducer, Don Juan. The first and second of (eventually) seventeen Cantos composed during Byron's self-imposed exile from England appeared, anonymously, in July 1819 and were greeted with scandal, condemnation, admiration and hilarity. Modern critics generally consider the self-proclaimed 'epic', which remained incomplete at Byron's death, to be his masterpiece.

The J in Juan is pronounced as an H. Just saying, since it's a Spanish name. Same as Jose.

@tyvek05 no, it was very much intended to be pronounced that way, as if it wasn't, he wouldn't have rhymed 'true one' and 'new one' with 'Juan' in this canto, which he did multiple times.

"joo-one Pronunciation. The 'Juan' in Byron's poem is pronounced - just to be perverse, it seems. Byron knew very well how the name should be pronounced, but just to be irreverent, he anglicised it and made it 'joo-one' so it could rhyme with 'new one' and 'true one' and such like."

Byron and everyone at the time pronounced it with a J. Just as they anglicized Don Quixote (with an x). Sorry

@@bernardbeatty5421, the curious anglicismos have persisted. I went to grad school with scholars from the UK who pronounced the French city of Lyon as Lion 🦁 and Calais as “Callas.” They would not stand corrected by non-Brits saying they were giving these words “proper British pronunciation.” 😅
