Jesus, Mary and Joseph were genuine asylum seekers (not immigrants) in Egypt (not Bethlehem). Jesus’s life was truly endangered in Israel. Other differences between them and the current influx of economic migrants include; they didn’t enter Egypt illegally (borders were open then as populations were smaller) and when they got there they lived peacefully and respectfully, practiced their religion unobtrusively, made no demands on the local population (other than to share their drinking water), didn’t plot to dominate the country, remained financially independent, and Joseph contributed his essential skills to the local economy.
