Yep me too...the yanks had great hitting in that era, if they would've had more pitching back than the yanks probably would've had more rings than they did in the 90's.

I didn't see Mays or Aaron, but I did see Rickey! I don't say this because the man has left us too soon, but when asked, I ALWAYS said the best ALL-AROUND baseball player I ever paid money to see was Rickey Henderson. The guy was THE show! There are guys I liked and thought were good to great, but NONE compared to Rickey. Many celebrities have died during my lifetime, but this one hits hard! I played baseball in school and softball as an adult and I WAS Rickey at every level! He made the game fun to watch and play!

Huge loss for baseball. Got to meet Rickey at the Hall. Took photos with us and chatted with us. If you didn’t know who he was you’d never know he was the generational talent that he was. He treated us fans like we were friends. I’m lucky enough to say I got to watch Rickey play and run, run, run! Rest in peace!

The 1980 season in Oakland under Billy Martin was a most exciting season to watch. It was Rickey Henderson's first full season, and he an Billy Martin were a great combination. When he returned to Oakland in 1989, he made that team complete.

Rickey also holds the record for most unintentional walks in MLB history. 2,190 - 61= 2,129. Subtract out his 688 intentional walks, and Bonds sits at 1,870. And no one *wanted* to walk Rickey, not on purpose.

I didn't watch baseball when I was growing up in the 90s, but I started watching it in 2005 and was into watching the Oakland A's at the time and even though I missed out on watching Rickey Henderson's career, he still had an impact on me. He clearly is the greatest Oakland Athletic of all time. He's just such an incredible player and I think I ought to look up some highlights of him. So sad he passed away. I'm honestly sick of the A's now because of their cheap ownership, but Rickey Henderson will be missed

Thanks for honoring Rickey with both Athletics and Oakland Jersey's. I know MLB network took a back seat to discussing Oakland and Ownership issues, but this is great. Rickey was the best!

I was 8 years old and living in Northern CA when Rickey debuted for the A's, and so got to see a lot of him up close. I always thought he was great, but also thought that maybe I believed he was the best because I got to see him all the time and I liked the A's. (I'm more of a Giants fan, but I never felt a rivalry with the A's - maybe because of Rickey.) Anyway, somewhere around 1999 or 2000 - while Rickey was still playing - Bill James wrote a big book where he ranked players historically, and I remember him writing, "If you cut Rickey Henderson in half, you'd have two Hall of Famers." I loved that line because it showed me that, yes, Rickey really was a great as I thought he was.

I noticed in football and baseball there’s no huge huge stars like they used to be in the 80s and 90s guys like Ricky Henderson were from a time when there were so many mythical players that just doesn’t exist anymore either in the NFL or the MLB

Mattingly is a class act and deserve the MVP in 1985. But Rickey was a close second and it would be hard to complain if he got the MVP in 1985.

Actually Rickey finished 3rd that year (Brett finished 2nd) but a good argument could be made for him winning it. It was one of his best 2 seasons ('85 and '90).

@BrianKendall-p4h7 сағат бұрын
@@DeDona1 Barfield and Boggs had overall better years in 86'. He shouldn't have won it in 86',Clemens had the best year. Mattingly's entire problem is he was elite for 4 years, Pretty good for a couple more years and then the back injury made him a shell of himself. Similar to Murphy,they just didn't last long enough.

He is Toronto’s bench coach. If the opportunity were there, I would love to see him back with the Yankees.
@fredvance761211 сағат бұрын
@@bpark0906Sadly Mattingly is being underused by the Blue Jays. When they hired him as Coach in 2023 I figured he was their defacto "Manager in Waiting"; especially considering that their current Manager John Schneider is clueless about the game. In two different play-off Series Schneider pulled their Starting Pitcher despite the fact they were both pitching well, if not dominating. He did so because of the Basball Nerd driven obsession over the 100 pitch count for Starters. The Jays lost both Series because of his moves. The problem with the Blue Jays runs deeper due to their incompetent President Mark Shapiro and his GM Ross Atkins. I would not hire them to run a Little League Team. Circling back to Mattingly, while I'd love to see him Manage the Blue Jays I don't see it happening for the reasons I've detailed above. Perhaps Mattingly will end up Managing the NY Yankees one day soon. Fred
