Thank you Don Muraco for the insights! You were my favorite wrestler in the 80s. Happy to see you survived the craziness of the industry. Enjoy your retirement! Godspeed Magnificent One! Saw you many times in CT

I talked to lou on wrestling phone talk they used to have and he told me he left because of a disagreement with Vince. I remember him telling me that Vince Sr had it so he could not be fired either.

Lou got the Wise Guys movie in 1986 and the Super Mario Brothers Super Show gig in 1989 so he was also busy acting after he got fazed out probably to get that SAG card and retirement money. Piper and Ventura did the same thing.

I thought Lou Albano was starting to do TV shows and movies outside of WWF that we’re taking up his time .

WWF was only using managers for tv at that point

Although the 3 Wise Men of the WWF - Lou, Blassie, and the Wizard - were done - Wizard passed away and Blassie was really getting up there - it is unusual that Lou was on his way out in 86. He wasn't that old and was a key part of the Rock and Wrestling angles. He was also popular with the more mainstream audience that the WWF had found. It feels like there is something else there that led to his leaving. Don may know, but he seems like the nicest retired wrestler in the world. He never slags anyone. One of the nastiest heels but seems like a good dude IRL.

That's the same way Stan Hansen is.

by 86 it was definitely a changing of the guard. at 86 you have blassie, heenan, hart (phasing in), albano, valiant...by mania 88 it's heenan, slick, martel, hart, fuji, virgil. from what i understand albano was a huge drunk, rather unreliable and unpredictable...also he was just at an age where he couldn't work in ring. but i (born in 82) remember clearly him being a featured character. i couldn't tell you what he did in wwe but i definitely knew captain lou

That is funny. Everytime I get thinking about what happened to this person or that, it mysteriously pops up as a question that gets answered. I seen Cyndi Lauper doing a song with Scott Wieland and got me thinking back to when that whole Captain Lou was in wrestling. I don't remember him leaving , it was like he was there and just he stopped being around and there was always so much excitement that you don't remember exits like that.

I believe by 1986, the WWF was completely moving out what's left during the Territory and Senior's days. You have Jimmy Hart just came in, Billy Graham was back but this time as manager including Fuji. New guys like Bobby Heenan, Randy Savage, Dino Bravo, The Rougeau Brothers, One man Gang, Terry Taylor, and Jake Roberts were coming in. Guys like Tony Garea, Tony Atlas, Rocky Johnson, Rene Goulet, Pedro Morales, George Steele, George Wells, and including others from the McMahon Sr years were either retiring, fazed out, or fired. Jr wanted to make the company roster feel fresh and nearly erased everything what's left from the Senior's years.

Jr. Should have never let George Steele go. Despite being in his character he's got one hell of a speaking voice. He would have made one hell of a play by play man to go with ironically Jesse Ventura. It would work.

Muraco sounds as though he may have suffered brain damage during his career. I always wanted to know why the popular Albano left in '86. Unfortunately, not from this interview.

Lou was offered the lead role as Mario in the Mario Bros. TV show. Lou had to shave off his goatee off.

Lou didn't need the WWF anymore at that point he was mainstream appearing on Howard Stern on the radio in videos making movies random appearances the Rock n Wrestling thing was the best thing for his career in those waning years he was still in the public eye for years after he left..
