Not even "thinking" of having a drink is not a part of recovery. Nor is it very impressive. Thousands of newcomers report not even "thinking" of drinking. Most of them drink anyway. When a sober person says they don't even "think" of drinking, it makes you wonder: what if he would "think" of having a drink, would he still be sober? Many of us, like Dr. Bob himself, continue to crave alcohol long after we get sober, and we know better than anyone just how powerful our God is. Because even when we do "think" of drinking, WE DON'T. And that's not because of any power we have. That's the power of a loving God.

How well does what he said align with what’s in the book? If not move on. For me I hear the 10th step promises.

@@maddogrecoveryaaspeakers9057 great point. Yes the 10th step promises freedom. Let's also remember what both Bill and Bob wrote in that book about their own experience: page 15, Bill says about his first 1.5 years sober- "This sometimes nearly drove me to drink..." and page 181, Dr. Bob says about his first 2.5 years sober- "I did not get over my craving for liquor much... It was almost always with me..."

@@spiritualawakening2675 I agree, experiences will vary. I’m glad I don’t believe I’ll be fighting the obsession to drink everyday. Thank God for that!

My understanding is that the co-founders countered those drinking thoughts with prayer & action, as clearly stated in their stories. By doing so, they grew through self-sacrifice & work for others. Accepting that we do not win the fight against Self & instead turning our thoughts & actions to God & Service. As a previous poster wrote - the Step Ten promises. The fact that some people still have drinking thoughts is no reason for those of us who don't, not to acknowledge the fact that, because we have picked up the simple kit of spiritual tools, laid at our feet, God has removed the obsession & compulsion to drink. Practiced as a way of life, I trust, based on evidence, that I will stay sober for the rest of my life by doing what the book Alcoholics Anonymous says will work. So far, it has worked for 34 years 😊
