The two could have said something that could've make the dish better and they're being an ass about it. The show is still a viable way for chefs to learn despite it being competitive, the competitors can lose and cry without being humiliated.

He always treats the other contestants bad, he never take on bad or negative responsibility (this happened in a a team task where he was the captain) and even at the beginning of this cookout he said he will definitely win this and was over confident. Thermometers are pieces of equipment to help you come to a final conclusion. Your ears, eyes, nose, and sense of touch is also supposed to help you come to a conclusion. If the dude just took the temps, and sliced throught the steak and saw an extremely rare steak, and figured the thermometer was still telling the truth then he's an idiot lol. ESPECIALLY since it seems like he was going for a more rare medium rare since he mentioned it saying 127.
