I hope this is satire, while the advice is great, by using a VPS you only shift your trust from one service to the other with minimal improvements. Truly self-hosting is the only option for the in the video mentioned perks. Obviously this doesn't really work out for E-Mail so going for a service like Proton / Tutanota / etc. is a very viable option. E-Mail shouldn't be used for private communication anyway because it never was meant to be.

I understand why people use non standard services due to privacy concerns (like alternative os's, messaging services, search engines etc.), but for me, I ultimately do not care about that stuff. If you do, good for you, it's not my business. But for me, I value my convenience. I know that's not the best mindset to have yeah, but if being super private means that I have to use worse search engines and weird non-standard software no one has heard of, I don't really care what Google or Microsoft is doing with my data. I know you guys are about to fucking berate me to death in the comments. Go on, I like a discussion

By the way, you mentioned RSS here- could you consider making a tutorial on how to set it up? It’s something I’ve wanted to use for a while but there are no good guides online about how to use it or set it up. I would be very grateful!

As Tech Midwit I thought I was actually getting privacy and didn't know there was better options. I enjoy using alternative programs. I''m a noob when it comes to these type of subject, so I enjoy seeing alternative and why they are better. Thank you for showing me better alternatives.

1)setting up email is lot easy than providing actual security for that inbox... anyways 2)many times "TECH MIDWIT" are super FORCED to use those services( like centralized services like WhatsApp or signal) in their profession or in academics 3) being on youtube and talking about privacy... are you kidding me...

Great video! I've actually been trying to shift my habits in tech recently, and I've been wanting to start self hosting stuff too. I'm just sort of starting to learn a lot of new stuff so your channel is a great find! I watched some of your videos and even checked out your music on bandcamp yesterday and really liked it. Thanks for making the content!

"Tech midwit" solutions are great for people that don't trust the big 4 (Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Apple) but don't know much about technology, "Based" ones are meant for people that don't trust anyone but themselves (which is how you should behave on the internet honestly) and would rather have absolute privacy and don't mind the learning curve / enjoy DIY technology stuff. For many people, "midwit" solutions are more of a transition phase, as they learn more and find the time, they will move on to "Based" ones.

At the end you can never be 100% independent of other's technology. As an example, Epik just got hacked, so if your domain was registered with them our info is online.

A service running open source source server software isn't really worth anything because you cannot verify what somebody else is running on their system. Since running a messaging server themselves isn't really an option for most people, the entire security and privacy must be based on the client itself part of that being end to end encryption. That is exactly what for example signal does. The way it is built it doesn't matter who is running the server and what exactly they are running. The NSA could run it and it would not make any difference for the integrity of the information. It would obviously affect the service availability as they could simply block people they don't want to use the service or shut it down entirely. But even that would not be that big of a deal since it is open source and in theory you could just fork it. Whatever....I think services like Signal don't even try to attract midwits...they try to become the new normie service. And I personally believe that is a good thing.

Capsul VPS. I used to self-host it on my homeserver, but that just got too inconvenient due to lacking an rDNS entry (ISPs hate email servers) so I settled for capsul.org. They accept Monero as well!
