@@jebidiahcarlyon3543 I think there is some truth to it, however if you've had an impact that deploys airbags, its a good chance you're going to have more problems than just broken thumbs. Trying to avoid said broken thumbs, however, isn't a stupid thing at all.
@VoidSixx
@VoidSixx 29 күн бұрын
@@jebidiahcarlyon3543 It has nothing to do with air bags. The steering system on a car is geared, think about how many times you have to turn the steering wheel just to get a relatively small angle change on the road wheels. You turn the steering wheel fairly quickly and the road wheels turn quite slowly. Now think about what happens in a collision where you hit the wall with your front road wheels, and they suddenly snap to one side at an angle. Now that things are working the other way, think about how quickly that's going to spin the steering wheel, and imagine what happens when you've got your thumbs hooked in there. It's fine to have your thumbs hooked into the wheel as long as you're aware enough to let go of the wheel before you crash.
@jebidiahcarlyon3543
@jebidiahcarlyon3543 29 күн бұрын
@@VoidSixx That's how Daniel Riccardo broke his wrist at Zandtvoort. I am talking about a minor collision where the airbag deployment is unexpected. A driver headed for a collision as dramatic as you are talking about will likely "death-grip" the wheel and without the foresight to just let go. Also, racecars usually don't have airbags so you are talking about a different kind of incident and injury. Image calmy driving on the highway with cruise control on and hitting a pothole that was hard to see. If the pothole is bad enough (american roads), it can cause structural damage to the car and deploy an airbag. This kind of accident is what I meant

the absolute refusal to even touch the brakes is baffling, it's almost like someone told them "if you're ever driving a manual transmission on circuit & you use the brakes, you're doing it wrong!" and this guy just took it at face value. this guy wasn't just driving like a bit of a helmet, he was genuinely dangerous to others on track, very little if any actual car control, doesn't understand that the gear lever is NOT a hand rest, and, can't drive the car any other way than keeping it in the redline ever corner, every straight and every braking zone (or I guess in this case it really was more of a suggestion) without any remote idea that what he's doing is incorrect and incredibly risky. a black flag should've been the bare minimum, if I worked at that circuit I'd be saying there's no way this guy goes back out without an instructor, he got really lucky especially with passing around the outside on corner exit that his god awful car control was not called into question, because if it had, he'd of caused a pretty nasty crash.

This the dude who thinks he’s going to set the track lap record on his first ever track day and thinks being fast is being quick even tho the safest place on track from him is on an apex 😂 I’m glad you mentioned black flagging him. In my track group you pass on a turn like he did or you go off track once you get called off track. You do it again and you’re done for the day.

That fella has bought a track day car after playing Codemasters F1 games and working out that flicking up and down shifts mid corner gives you more grip.

I had a mate many years back, drove a souped up E30 325, he did a lot of unnecessary downshifts. In his mind he was driving like a racing driver. Car was done for after 4 months

One of the things that's been instrumental to me driving the nissan gtp better in iracing is resisting the temptation to go down an extra gear because it has plenty of torque to leap out of the corner even lower in the power band - fewer shifts mean more consistency, and lower rpms on corner exit make it less likely to torch the rear tires or, at worst, spin. And that's with a 1988 turbo system. Imagine how much flatter the torque curve is in a modern track toy built to be more driveable than purely fast?

In 93, you could downshift to slow down and initiate a drift all day long. Granted that was in Sega's Daytona USA but still.. Make cars great again.
@theKashConnoisseur

I mean, in real life you can also downshift to slow down. Ask any big rig driver. But there's a fine line between engine *braking* and engine _breaking._ The fella didn't even attempt a rev match.

It’s a bit confusing the passenger didn’t stop him and have him pull in the pits. Even with stuff as simple as the hand placement. The stickers on passengers helmet suggest he’s experienced, so he should have recognized how unsafe the situation was.
