SALTECRAFTER #24! Today we are reviewing Faber Castell's Gelatos art craft kit. This was recommended to me by amazon as a great DIY kit for scrapbooking, however, as a saltecrafter, I will let you know whether or not it is worth it.

I had a lot of fun watching you try this out, but I don’t think you evaluated the kit fairly. Art kits aren’t the same as craft kits in that they generally aren’t single “project” kits, but rather a collection of materials for you to explore new mediums that you may not be familiar with, so it’s not necessarily going to have a set of instructions for the kit. The whole purpose is to jumpstart your creativity so you can do what you’d like with the materials, and the ones they supply you with meant to supplement that. Also with your vibrancy issue, “vibrant” is not the same as “opaque”. What you experienced was an opacity problem on the black paper. The colors were actually quite vibrant in most situations. That being said, this still isn’t a great kit. I just don’t think it deserved quite as much grief as you gave it.

Yeah you can't really make a serious art kit where you tell people where they have to put each paintstroke, that's not art. But they can still show an example where they walk you through an art piece from start to finish though.

Since it is an art kit and not a project kit like you said, I also think the salt was a bit heavy lol. It definitely seemed to lack in the basic introduction of gelatos and how to basically use them, though, so I can see how that's frustrating. They could have gone into the history of this medium, different basic techniques, and maybe some tips on how to use the template and stamp. But overall, I feel like most people who spend the money on Faber Castell products are either art students or artists who already know how to create with that medium. Also, you can give someone a $100 box of watercolors but if they're not good at painting, it won't matter HOW good the product is! Everything takes practice. Ehh sorry for the long winded reply lol

Squiggydoo I totally agree. It's like complaining about a watercolour kit when it only has a brush, lots of colour tubes and a palette, but no instructions.

I said the same thing, yes the kit has issues (the twist tubes for example, Faber Castell should have better quality control than that, come on guys) but it wasn't a one out of ten situation at all.

*What's a Gelato?* Gelatos Colors are the original multi-purpose medium and is the “go to” color option for mixed media artist’s and paper crafter’s alike! This dynamic medium is a compact, acid free color stick that glides on creamy smooth for vibrant color and coverage. Gelatos blend easily with or without water and can be used on any porous surface. There are endless ways to use Gelatos, you can add water to create a mist, mix with your favorite mediums, combine to create new colors, add water to create watercolor, layer colors, use for stamping and so much more.

They're not at all like crayons. They're a water soluble oil pastel that is blendable with fingers brushes and tools. Once water activated or dry they become more permanent. The trouble she had with testing them wet is that they dried on the paper and started to set, likely because of the lights. I am sad that they were presented this way instead of as a playful art tool. If you sketch and do art I highly recommend you give them a try before blindly believing this review. If I tried to make a dinner plate from poly clay I would be equally unhappy with my results as she is with her first try of gelatos. :) She's right, the instructions suck. This isn't a beginner kit. The supplies are still superb.

They are light-fast and archival and encased in plastic with usually a perfectly working lipstick mechanism. I haven't heard of this problem in many videos on youTube and trusting the spirit of "Made in Germany" I don't think it is a frequent problem. So they are a little pricey but not more so than other light-fast and archival art materials.

I'm going to play devil's advocate for a second as this sort of bugged me. I don't think this kit was made for beginners and it's not really a kit to "learn how to use it"; it's more of kit to have several colors and supplies to test what the product is. It's more like a bundle than a kit. Plus the front of the box does say "tips" not "instructions". These are very advanced art supplies from a company that expects you to use them in a fine arts setting. Usually you nail these reviews and bring up great points but I think it's a bit biased and unfair to criticize an art "kit" the same way you would a craft kit because they aren't anywhere close to being the same. It'd be like condemning a tool kit for not having real instructions on how to build a birdhouse when it's not supposed to. This is all just my opinion but I do think this review was a bit unfair in spots...

As a fine artist myself.I never used them but I do know how I would be able to integrate it into my art if I had the money to buy them. They are great art supplies with high artist grade even. She just isn t a artist but a crafter that didn t research the art material and indeed never did it mention jer getting a craft kit..this is just a bundle of supplies to use together. And some papers to see what paper you d love to use them in and keep neatly together with that ring for later reference if you bought or using some kind of paper simular to them to see what results to expect.Just like those watercolour dot charts

To be honest I think that this kit had so much more potential than you portrayed it as. Because this is an art kit, and not a craft kit I didn’t expect it to have instructions because it’s your art and your free to express yourself however you want it art so it kind of made sense there was no instructions. While in a craft kit, the goal is to make a certain craft and to for it to look a certain way means instructions. I think you should have rated it higher because thats what art is, a way to express yourself, and I don’t think you need instructions to express yourself

It's not about "if you have the freedom to do what you want with it and therefore it's "ok" to have no real how-to guide" but rather a willful ignorance to assume that they have a full on guide in there. If you buy art supplies you buy it because you either already know how to work with the medium or you buy cheaper ones to *get into* the medium to try new things and if it is for you or not. They gave already more than I was expecting from Faber Castell since they are usually a well known quality brand for art. So therefore, she should have done a bit of research beforehand to know what she was getting herself into (like you usually do when you try to work with something new).

What they should have said was to very lightly rub them on the textured paper and then spread the color around with a baby wipe. I use these all the time for card making backgrounds. Also to seal them, find the cheapest hairspray around and use that.

First of all, watercolors and fabric paint are 2 different things Second of all, Jackie is not a professional in this domain, I'm a professional in watercolor art and pencil art, so if I started crafting with clayI wouldn't be a pro at it. She's a pro when it comes to crafting with clay, not drawing, they're 2 completely domains. Third of all, I have this gelato set as well at home, they work perfectly for me AND THEY COME WITH INTRUCTIONS, This product is meant for PROFESSIONALS and Jackie isn't one in this case.

I replied this to another commenter, but thought it was worth repeating: Yes! Agreed! I was hoping I wasn’t the only one with this option and that someone would point out all the flaws in her evaluation of an intro to a new medium kit for artists and not a crafting kit assembled with a specific project as the goal. Typically, artists want the freedom to create how they see fit, not follow a step-by-step to achieve the same project outcome as every other artist with the kit. I would hate being told exactly how I had to use the new product (other than the helpful hints that you mentioned were actually present in the booklet); I would feel stifled and forced to sacrifice my own individual style. That said, I certainly agree with many others who have said that they’d expect better quality control from a company like Faber-Castell; i too found that disappointing as I have been considering giving this product a try. For now, I’ll stick with water-soluble soft oil pastels or something like the marabu mixed media art crayons or Caran d’Ache neocolor ii water-soluble wax pastels/crayons. They seem to have the same intended properties with far better quality. But thanks for showcasing something new and giving your honest feedback on the product. I’ll continue watching for more such honesty.

I normally love your videos and your salty reviews, but this one was a bit rough to sit through... I think your criticisms about the lack of sealer and website link were totally valid and on point. As for the use of the kit, etc. context is really important. These supplies are meant for scrapbooking and for people with higher levels of experience, not a ‘pick up and go’ style craft kit. Treating it like something it is not is unfair bias. Thank you though for the videos in general, I won’t let something silly like not agreeing with one video keep me from continuing to enjoy your content!

Random question but do you think that the score would have been different if you had reviewed it as a general art material instead of a “kit”? Most of the art materials I buy have no instructions or suggestions so if I want to learn how to use them I go on KZbin or I ask other people in the art community. With a kit you expect it all to be there in one place. What score would you give them as an art material where you do your own research? I was expecting so much more because it is a FC product, even though I have heard many comments like yours that people can’t figure out how to use them properly or just have no idea what they are doing with them. The other FC products I have used (mainly coloured pencils and chalk pastels) have been absolutely excellent.

This is a good supply if you are an artist. Remember that this is a salty review, she's intentionally cutting and ascerbic. Like I said above, I would be just as unhappy with polymer clay if I was trying to make a dinner plate and tried to cut on it as she is trying to use a poorly advertised kit as a starting tool to understanding the medium. Water soluble oil pastel that becomes permanent when water activated or dry on the page. I bet you can think of lots of ways to use an opaque medium that can be blended with finger or paintbrush and goes on like a crayon! Don't take one salty review designed to be salty and let it scare you off of a really awesome art supply.

see, you are confusing vibrant with opaque. When mixing with gesso/yeso you actually make it opaque {which is why the neon orange showed on black). these are details an artist would know. this isnt a craft kit but an art materials one. i can see how you are struggling, but you are not the demographic; i'm sorry if it sounds harsh. btw, not saying gelatos are good, but the kit isnt as big an issue as you are making it out to be, this was mostly the user.

So they are watercolor crayons??? Does anyone else know what Artex paints are? My mom did painting with these paint pens on that velvet paper back in the 80s...maybe even 70s. They were fairly popular...many people did the Jesus one and would hang them up in their houses.

Hi Jackie, I use Gelatos when I am scrapbooking or making junk journals. They do take some experimentation and practice to get the most out of them. They can be very satisfying and produce lovely art. I have to say that the kit you bought was trash and not at all helpful. Maybe sometime when you are not doing a video you might try playing around with them using textured papers, stamps and stencils. You might enjoy them as you become more familiar with the medium. Stay Salty!

09crafty09 Okay art class time >Cause ink pads cannot give a smooth blending transition and it's never vibrant enough, liquid ink can bleed >watercolors are a water medium plus it'd need a lot more pigment taken which again, requires a lot of agua. Which is not good for paper. >Pastels are really freaking messy, plus, smudge off paper and against pages, now if you mean oil pastels it's just gonna stain most paper used in crafting >Plus Salty used them HORRIBLY in this kit.

If they don't inspire you, you are not doing it right! I have the basic set as illustrated, I have used only one of the papers included (and I don't use the booklet). One hint, I use mine on watercolor paper, and I usually apply gesso first. I find the gesso helps the gelato spreads better. Also, using a wet wipe helps spread the color, or you might apply water with a paintbrush. Also, you want to use gelatos, watch KZbin videos. You will find many artists use gelatos, and there is also videos done by Faber- Castell.

Gelatos are a very-often used soft, wettish crayon/pastel-like medium used in mixed-media art (think art journaling, book altering, junk journals, etc.)... We mixed-media artists have a gigantic community here on YT if you want to see us using these and lots of other mixed media materials. Mixed-media artists tend to like them for exactly what you stated, that cross between a pastel and a watercolor, and if you aren't familiar with what we do, you might be surprised at how much a of a need these actually fill. They're often rubbed over a textured (gesso, texture paste, etc.) surface to give a translucent, pastel-like color that can go on like watercolors if you want, or blend out like them (mix them with water, btw, in a separate dish or palette like any other watercolor before applying to your paper). Maybe it isn't the best reasoning on their parts, but perhaps Faber Castell was thinking that people would go to YT for tutorials and pointers, as it was pretty much YTers that made them popular to begin with. Since this isn't a "craft kit" that makes a certain number of projects, it makes sense to me that it wouldn't come with step-by-steps as much as it would hints - crayons don't either.

No but you see, art kits and craft kits are different. With "professional" kits such as this one, they do not have instructions like kids art and craft products do when theyre one use, this is multiple use and they dont expect begginers to go out and randomly purchace this product without any knowledge of what it is. Theres the internet to help figure things out. Say theres an acrylic paint art kit, its just some paints and paper etc, they wont have instructions on how to use them as theres multiple uses and beginners dont tend to buy the product without research and expect to be instructions like kids paints. Idk this annoyed me as i felt like this whole review was unfair, especially if you dont know how to use said art product. Its not like a slime kit where you NEED instructions and beginner friendly, and also its made for kids so it has to be, art products arent quite like that. Its kinda like if i brought polimer clay without reserch and made something and just kept it there and didnt bake it, would i give it a bad review for not knowing what to do? No because it was my fault for not doing research on how to use it, polymerclay doesnt come with instructions (not the ones i use anyway) and i dont mind because i watched many vids on how to use it before hand And no you dont complete a prodject, its a kit for multiple use and not to just make something, its so you have everything there so you can actually use them. The transparent thing is a stretch oof. With the gelatos i dont think you should push them all out in one go, thats irresponsible. Please PLEASE LOOK UP WHAT TO DO NEXT TIME. I like you but this just wasnt a good review and was a huge stretch. Oh and big deal it needs a sealer, so does charcole, pastelles, chalk etc

Agree, agree, AGREE! Agree so much, I’m reposting a previous response: Yes!

There is a better way to use these archival, permanent after water activation art medium. Water colors are NOT permanent, ever. I personally would not use them like a crayon. Perhaps you might have done some more research before demonstrating them. There are many benefits to creating with them. Perhaps this was a rushed sampling, and why what you did was ineffective. Yes, I agree the kit is a bit expensive, but is probably due the archival quality I had mentioned before. I'm not sure why your sticks wouldn't go back in, maybe they were dropped at some point. I have some gelatos and I do not have a problem with them retracting.
@lexiespinosa8964
@lexiespinosa8964 5 жыл бұрын
I get where you're coming from, but I also feel like this is pretty unfair. 😅 In my opinion, the price range alone signifies that it's not meant for people who have no idea what gelatos are. You're expected to have done a little research into what you're buying--but even if you were surprised with this as a gift, you could easily do a Google search on what they are or how to use them. As for the instruction manual being mainly tips as opposed to step-by-step projects, I'd like to point out that most of the adult art kits I've bought and received as gifts don't include specific instructions like what you might find in a children's sewing kit. They assume that while you may not have used this particular medium before, you are an artist and like to do your own thing and draw your own pictures. The tips are probably just meant to showcase the medium's versatility and make you think, "Oh, I could use these to do ___! That technique would be interesting for doing ____!" The last thing I wanted to be slightly salty about is how you said there are no benefits to using these. Gelatos are archival quality and permanent when dry, so if you use them in some kind of art journal, they won't rub onto the next page, assuming you let them dry completely. You made a lot of good points. It just irked me a little that you gave these such a low rating before even becoming familiar with them; however, I do understand that you're not necessarily rating the art supplies so much as the kit and that you have different expectations for a kit than I do. So nice review, even if I strongly disagree with it. Six on ten dorks.

I had these things for a few years in the back of my arts closet and was unable to find a use for them, until recently, when I fell in love. The best thing I found for them to be used is applying the dry gelato crayon onto a smooth, plastic surface (using it like a palette), and mixing the colors on that palette with water to get whatever color I'm looking for. This allows me to create any color of watercolor, and the gelato-water mix is thick enough that it won't run off and it's easy to mix without risk of contamination between watercolor colors. I use it in place of my other watercolor tools pretty often now, it has become my standard. Best of luck to y'all!

People seem to defend a brand a little too much... I'm an artist, I've used these and I don't quite love them bc the pigment and the agglutinating component gives it a fine plastic like texture that's a little too creamy and simply doesn't cut it for me. That's of course, for my stile of working. But I think that the problem with the kit is tha it's an art kit; and many art kits tend to be gimmicky and misleading on what you can achieve with them but that's why those are so appealing to beginners. Realistically, I'm not sure if I would use such expensive pigments to make a stamp, it doesn't seem cost efficient to me. And probably that's why they don't give detailed and proper instructions on how to use them with the provided material, using stencils with pigment with that texture it's not that great of a project to begin with.

One use for the dropper: you can use a gelato as a spray. You can cut off a bit of gelato, put it in the dropper, add water, put the top right on then shake to blend. You can put this in the sprayer then spray. Of course, you can just mix the gelato and water in the sprayer, but you can also mix the two in the dropper first.

Ok so basically gelatos if any of u are confused are like soft crayons or oil pastels but they aren’t they are in the middle and basically you color what u want with them (be gentle when coloring) and then you drop water on it and then use your brush to blend and whatever that’s what the water dropper was for! Hope this helps

Faber-Castell made Gelatos for the scrapbooking crowd. I like their actual art supplies but I always thought of Gelatos as over-priced mutant wax pastels made for jumping on the bandwagon.

I haven't tried them but I had a thought what if you put the gelatos down on a paint pallet then mix with water like watercolors?

Just thought I’d mention this, but I tried the code and now it seems to be working, and has fully detailed instructions. I hope this helps anyone who has these ‘gelatos’ and is confused lmao. I font think anyone should really buy these at their price range and stuff but ya know,

I love my Gelatos! Im by no means an artist lol but i love them. Had to watch videos to learn how to use them. There’s definitely a learning curve to these. But you can achieve beautiful results with them

I’m sooo glad you did this video, I’ve been wanting to try gelatos for a long time but they are so expensive I’ve not been able to afford them. This is the best video on gelatos I’ve seen that shows how it is for beginners as far as techniques (even though you gave it not the best rating, it made me realize they are worth the money for what I would want to use them for) Thank you 🖤
